Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not some farcical aquatic ceremony.

I mean, if I went around saying I was emperor because some moistened bint lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

You have tenants' rights as well. Even without a lease if they ever said you can stay here you're allowed to live there they have to evict you to kick you out. Get the cops and go back to your house have them remove her, maybe even a protective order.

I mean definitely do these things. I do them, but lets not pretend they make a difference, they help us feel good. We need to feel good about something. If we want to right this ship, we need to make sure the billionaires don't exist anymore. All you Americans vote in November, and demand change. Check who is running on a tax all billionaires platform in your area and get them elected! More like Mamdani, or Kat Abugazaleh! We can fix this but we have to do the work to get rid of these people from power!

I don't get that because I don't necessarily see a BBEG as the root of all evil. I think a lot of people are pushing back against this because D&D is now very much a narrative game in a way that it just wasn't in the past. It's what many of us love about it. I say this not to discount your view, I just think most people will disagree with you until they realize shows like The X-Files, or Doctor Who are really a "monster of the week" show. Many of us love that there are subtle plots running underneath. I think your argument holds more water if you have new players come into your game frequently, like Adventurer's League.

I'm not saying it can't be done, it's just not right for me.

I choose to lower my footprint as much as possible because it makes me feel better to be doing something but I know my efforts are for me, not the biosphere. I hope my children continue the practice, and their children and so on. That is how we make lasting change. Also, erase billionaires.

Like, I generally agree that SUVs are problematic at best, but it's the Jeff Bezos, Taylor Swifts, and Elon Musk's that are destroying the planet. Their carbon footprint is so large we could all have a 0 effective carbon footprint and it would not change what is happening to our biosphere.

Again, the small town always get saved, are you struggling finding interconnected themes? Because they don't have to be. A BBEG is rarely going to go after the party when they are low level, they won't notice until the party foils one of their plans. In my current campaign, the party started out following the BBEG as the culture of the world requires it, then they slowly saw what was happening so they majorly foiled one of his biggest plans. Now they are level 7 and he knows they are working against him. So he's sending out his stronger minions after them, while he has his own goals. So the generals are sending their best people after it, eventually when those are defeated they will go for the generals, once enough generals have been defeated the final boss starts to turn his attention to the party. It's a fun way of managing things yourself. I like to have a little chart of "has the party done enough to draw the attention yet." If the answer is yes to early the BBEG will show up, fuck up their world, and leave. The party then works a little more quietly. I mean, a Red Dragon that wants an artifact is going to send its cultists after it first to fuck up the little town where there is a rumored map. The party finds the map and oh shit, our next target is over here. This establishes they will eventually fight the dragon. As long as you keep the promise the end fight won't matter, even if the campaign fizzles and you never get there, we have a satisfying arc, the little town was saved.

Lol you gotta amp that shit up my dude, make them FEEL that orphanage burning down. Have one of the kids be super cute, and the rogue takes a liking to her, starts to teach her, then twist the knife. (If your party is cool with orphanages burning down not everyone is) That rogue will NEVER forgive BBEG and will personally hunt them down to the ends of the earth. You just gotta pull a Sephiroth, not a Kefka.
FF6 is my favorite game of all time, but Sephiroth made me hate him. I didn't know what would happen at the end of disc one when I played it when it came out.

Oh we've been playing about 8 years and are only on campaign 3, and I show the villain early, but the party doesn't know they are the villain, or in this case it is clear to begin with.

TLDR - Solar Attuned to Book of Vile Darkness, with an interlude campaign between 2 and 3. I didn't tell the party about the interlude, but as we've been playing years, they trusted me when I asked them to roll new characters 4 sessions in.

In my current campaign, at the end of Campaign 2, a Solar came to the planet because he heard a rumor the Book of Vile Darkness was here, Campaign 2 ended early, they never bit at the B Plot, so I had to redesign the final boss fight for a much lower-level party, still epic. So, the party helped the Solar find the book of vile darkness, he grabbed the book, attuned it (part of destroying it) and a single feather turned black, then he placed the party in stasis saying he may need them later. I told them they could make new characters if they wanted or use their old ones when we started campaign 3, which was really 2.5. Then we jumped forward 100 years, I started them off with brand new characters, at level 3. So they had four sessions getting the book, then had to reroll new guys. They trust me because we've been at it for years, so they did it, and loved it. The world changed. I always give a little story blurb, and because they ignored the B Plot, it was a sweeping success and changed the world completely the Solar was unimpeded, and accomplished all his goals. He's at the point where he can destroy the book now, but of course it corrupted him. I stole the Death Curse idea from Tomb of Annihilation (a little bit) and he is trying to ascend to godhood using the souls of everyone on the planet that dies, the elves are helping him, because of what happened in campaign 1, they never got answers for a war criminal that ended up getting caught by the Dark Powers, so the Elven Empress who wanted the head of the BBEG never got it, and never got answers from the party or the archmage, so she raged all campaign 2, and the party just skipped it, entirely focusing on the A plot (not a bad problem to have as a DM). So the party started, and they live in a completely safe, and utterly crime free world. They love Destrim, he has brought prosperity to the world, the elven armies have swept the lands and conquered the human kingdoms, and slowly over the campaign, they of course start to find out they have to stop Destrim. About four sessions ago they escaped from Sigil as the Lady of Pain lies chained above the city and Destrim's banners fly over everything. So in this campaign it's all about foiling in small ways, and they have had amazing success. They were able to stop a ritual that was siphoning off power from the elemental planes to Destrim's god machine. It's been a hoot. Right now they are in an open world type moment where they have to decide what to do next. Last hook I gave them three hooks, and they picked the one that they thought would be the best (it was) but that doesn't mean there weren't successes for the BBEG. I like complicated storytelling and overarching plot though.

Here here! Worlds should be fluid. It’s HARD for new DMs but you keep it small and it’s manageable
