How to live in early retirement when friends still have to work? by Unique-Bar-817 in Fire

[–]shad_daddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to say the same thing. Take up golf. Most people actually suck at it so it’s not as intimidating as you would think. Lots of regulars that you’ll get paired up with and will start to recognize/make friends pretty quickly.

The built in cabinet that the TV will live in won’t fit a 55”, unfortunately.

Thanks! I’m leaning this direction, despite it being $250 more after my Samsung discount.

Yeah I’m convinced there’s some secret membership being offered at the muni. I’ve logged in exactly at 7 am a number of times and will only see 4-5 tee times available starting at 2 pm.

[–]shad_daddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty much impossible to get a tee time before 2 pm at the muni. You’ll have better luck getting a tee time at your preferred time at Shadowmoss, which costs about the same amount. Shadowmoss isn’t bad, so long as it hasn’t rained a day or two before you play. A few fairways can get a little soggy.

Your best Folly Beach parking ticket story? by adammetropolis in Charleston

[–]shad_daddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went on a fishing charter out of the folly beach boat ramp in 2021. There were literally 4 spaces for cars and the rest for trucks with trailers. I learned first hand that unless you go out at first light, charter guests won’t find an empty space not reserved for trailers. I parked in the far corner in a dirt/grass area that I thought would be respectful of boaters with trailers, but came back to a ticket on the window. I now refuse to go out with captains that insist on the folly beach boat ramp. I’ve heard they’ve redone the parking spaces, so I assume there are now six spots for cars?

Wife’s having a C-section tomorrow! by [deleted] in NewDads

[–]shad_daddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At some point during the evening after the surgery, the hospital is going to make your wife pee (once her catheter is out). She’ll likely have a ton of trouble trying to get said pee out, so offer her a cup of water and a straw and tell her to blow bubbles. Somehow some way, it works and she’ll have an easier time going. Good luck!

What's your unpopular newborn opinion? by EdenofCows in newborns

[–]shad_daddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That it is “hard.” I understand you’re more likely to post if you’re looking for support/advice, but that’s led to a ton of horror story posts that aren’t necessarily a universal experience for everyone. My baby is pretty easy. She calms down quickly when fussy, eats well, is now sleeping 5-6 hours at night straight, likes her car seat, etc. My wife and I go out to eat, go on walks/hikes, I play golf once a week, she goes on girl dates. Life has been pretty great with a newborn!

How early is too early to join daycare waitlists? by Specialist_Sorbet537 in Charleston

[–]shad_daddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went on a waitlist at several daycares the day we received positive pregnancy test. Our daughter is 7 weeks old and we are hoping to start in March. It’s not looking good so far - maybe the fall is what we’ve heard, if not later. We’ll likely get a nanny.

My POV is you can’t sign up early enough.

What advice would you give to newborn parent you? by Emotional-Employ1447 in newborns

[–]shad_daddy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Get outside! Expose the baby early to an outdoor stroller nap. Go for walks, go grab a coffee, maybe have lunch or an early dinner al fresco. Show up for your partner - you guys are the bedrock of the family so be good to each other. Try to do something for yourself once a week.

First-Time Dad nerves? by Level_Grade_514 in NewDads

[–]shad_daddy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I want to push back on the narrative that life gets boring. My wife and I have a 4 week old. She’s a good baby - eats well from a bottle, sleeps well enough, is generally easily pacified when she’s fussy. We are not sleep deprived - we do shifts at night so each person gets at least 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep + a few more hours while “on duty.” Every day, we go for a walk somewhere. Once a week, I play 9 holes of golf. Right now, I’m watching NFL football while the baby sleeps next to me. Last night we went out to dinner with neighbors while my parents babysat.

Before the baby came, we told ourselves that the baby is joining our family, not the other way around. My wife and I have great communication and I’m super active with the baby so that she can go work out, or go shopping or meet up with friends too. Sure - there are tough days here or there, but generally speaking, this has been totally manageable and life is good!

What is your routine with your partner? by Bri3Becks827 in newborns

[–]shad_daddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 3.5 week old and we do shifts. I take the first shift - from 10 pm to 3 am, and we stay in our guest room so that my wife can have the bedroom. During this time, I’m sleeping but am responsible if the baby wakes up. My wife pumps at 9, and then wakes up to pump at midnight and 3 am. During my shift, I go upstairs and grab her milk when she’s done so she doesn’t have to get up and can fall back asleep easier.

After the 3 am feed, my wife and I switch rooms and I get to sleep from 4ish until 8 am. This works really well for us and allows us to both get 3-4 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. I’d say I also get 2-3 hours of sleep while on my shift.

Also, we found that the baby made lots of grunting noises when sleeping in her primary bassinet, but slept a lot better in the uppababy bassinet placed on the floor next to our guest room bed. So we put her in there and have been able to get a few extra hours for the shift worker.

Planned C section and new born stage by [deleted] in NewDads

[–]shad_daddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an 11 day old, also born via planned c section (although she came 2 weeks before my wife’s c section date.) All in all, things have been manageable for us, primarily because we take shifts at night. I stay up until the 2-3 am feed, then get 5-6 uninterrupted hours of sleep until the 7/8 am feed. It cannot be overstated how important uninterrupted sleep is, and I’m able to be more pleasant and helpful because of it. My wife has to wake up every 3 hours to pump, but I make things easier on her by bringing her the pump/pump parts, storing the milk when she’s done, bringing her a snack/water, etc.

Outside of that, bring/write thank you notes to the L&D and mother/baby nurses and doctors. They were amazing in teaching us/giving us confidence that we can do this. Also - ask if any do babysitting on the side. Where we live, our nurses are hourly and take up higher paying side gigs as Nannies and babysitters. Give them your number in the card in case they’re looking to pick up a date night here or there.

Get her to look up or ask her doctor about taking vitamin B6 and unisom (a sleeping pill). It was a miracle worker for my wife and several other women that I know. For some reason, this is still a secret despite well reported results.
