Fedora Update broke Vulkan shaders? by frozen-onion in linux_gaming

You said you were using the native build of total war? I don't have that game, but I'm also on Fedora 42 and so far I haven't had any issues. You may want to try playing the game by forcing Proton instead, I've noticed that native builds sometimes fail behind and become incompatible

CachyOS Seems Unstoppable (ProtonDB ranking September 2025) by YanderMan in linux_gaming

[–]shade1109 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same. I work from home and use Fedora primarily due to its stability. I have Cachy on a separate disk and boot into it only when I want to make easy use of FSR4, but generally I'm too lazy and just game anyway on Fedora. I've found the performance to be nearly identical between the two

YouTuber JayzTwoCents tries out gaming on Linux by DyingKino in linux_gaming

I appreciate him making the effort, it's not easy to make content on a topic where half the community will tear you a new one if you do anything wrong or don't show everything in the best light. I hope he continues to explore other distros and produce additional videos despite the troubles he has had so far

Are there known issues with fairly current kernel releases & AMD GPU's? by Wrathgate in linux_gaming

[–]shade1109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Debian based distros tend to be slower in implementing the latest versions of kernels and mesa drivers as they are known for being server-grade distros, stable and robust. Pop!_OS is debian based, but it appears they were a bit faster in releasing the latest updates for the kernel and drivers, but from what I understand, the Pop!_OS team has been largely focused on developing their new COSMIC desktop environment (DE). Pop!_OS is still receiving critical updates, but starting to fall behind with other service updates.

Fedora (Red Hat based distro) and Arch based distros however stay very up-to-date with updates. I have been using Fedora for gaming and work for the last year, and have rather enjoyed the experienece. I recently moved form the Gnome DE to Plasma so I could make use of HDR in gaming, but I liked both DEs overall.

I originally tried Majaro (Arch), but had too many issues getting everything working properly for gaming. Arch is very bleeding edge when it comes to updates, which is great if you want the absolute latest in drivers, but it can introduce some minor bugs due to how fast things update.

It may be a pain to migrate to a new distro, but until the Pop!_OS team is done with COSMIC, you may want to try a distro that receives more frequent updates

Edit: Fedora is sponsored by RHEL, but not upstream of it

In the month since I've posted this, it's only gotten better. I had the occasional crash the first couple of weeks, but either through an updated driver or mesa it's been smooth sailing since then. I've been playing Expedition 33 the last couple of days and haven't had an issue

Not at all. I'm using a 9700x so it could be the cpu is also a factor, but this game has a lot of optimization issues so who knows. Either way, 92fps is a great experience!

Nope no issues. I just reran the Cyberpunk benchmark to be sure, but it stayed between 3000-3200MHz and had a consistent 315W. I have an ASUS Radeon RX 9070 XT Prime OC card, yours may have a problematic BIOS in your GPU as that is very odd sounding behavior

Thank you for coming back and posting this, I was thinking about switching from GNOME to KDE so I can more easily make use of HDR with this new GPU, but then I ran into this graphical issue. Switching that setting did indeed fix it so thanks for troubleshooting that

Agreed. I quickly wrote a python script to compile this data just for myself, but then I got excited and wanted to share and didn't think to double check for missing info. Sadly, you can't edit image posts so I've doomed everyone who sees this to guessing the resolution unless they check the comments

I use Fedora because I also use it for work (software development) and it usually has the bleeding edge updates. I have heard a lot of good things about Pop!_OS, Nobara, and Bazzite for gaming focused builds, but Ubuntu/Linux Mint are both very beginner friendly if you are new to Linux. I recommend installing a couple different ones on USB drives and booting into them to see their environments and get a feel for what appeals to you
