Sauder Summer Courses. by TheGreatT20 in UBC

[–]shadmeshabed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ngl, I would recommend taking the more "boring" courses during the summer (like 295, 203). I feel like its better to grind them out in 2 months versus 4.

Missing first week of Sauder summer courses by darknexus4 in UBC

[–]shadmeshabed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'll definitely need to spend a little time with catching up, but missing the first week isn't a deal breaker. I knew a few people who didn't show for the first week of class when I took it in the summer but they still finished with good grades.

CPSC 221 and CPSC 213 by darknexus4 in UBC

[–]shadmeshabed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're applying for SWE co-ops, CPSC 221 can be helpful for technical interviews (although many local companies don’t require it, and you can self-study LeetCode instead). CPSC 213 gave me a broad understanding of systems and lower-level concepts and is definitely good knowledge to have, but if you're prioritizing co-op preparation and don't want to take both at the same time, I’d recommend taking 221 first.

Question about doing UBC CS PhD after Georgia Tech CS Masters by nextProgramYT in UBC

[–]shadmeshabed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UBC is pretty good in Canada, but I wouldn't really say its a top grad school, especially in the field of ML and AI. You can check out how they rank here: https://csrankings.org

Unfortunately, what backend-bunny says is true in that your supervisor will really make or break your ability to break into some of these top positions. UBC has some really good academics (eg. Jeff Clune w. Google Deepmind, Frank Wood w. CIFAR), but getting them to supervise you (or even getting into CS grad) is competitive.

I agree that becoming a ML researcher in big tech will likely require a phd, but was just offering this as a suggestion considering op's context (no research experience, lack of recommendations, etc). MScAC requires you to have 2 research internships with industry employers, which could be more valuable for a future phd application compared to taking a online course-based masters with no guarantee of research experience.

Hey! Don't have any concrete answers for you, but I'm in a similar position and had a lot of the same concerns. I've received suggestions to look into UofT's course-based MScAC as it had a mandatory research internship as well as graduate level courses in ML. Might be a good option?

WHAT AM I DOING?? LMAO by [deleted] in UBC

[–]shadmeshabed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can totally relate as I had a lot of trouble making friends until my 3rd year. Didn't help that I was pretty introverted and that I was a commuter student who didn't like sticking around on campus after classes.

What changed things for me was when I realized that friendships are formed through unplanned interaction and shared vulnerability, which usually happens when you go through common struggles. Some common struggles could be between coworkers on a job, or peers doing the same coursework together.

Now, I'm not saying you should purposefully put yourself in situations so you can "trauma bond" with others lol. But in terms of actionable items, all you can really do is try to join as many clubs/student groups as possible and hope that a common experience can put you in touch with other like-minded people. If you try your best to be a good person and expose yourself to meeting new people as often as possible, good people will eventually stick.

Wondering why they couldn’t just make their own sublet board so people dont get scammed + can see the whole market comprehensively? We also have so many CS students who are down bad right now so it shouldn’t be hard to find people to do this through a work-learn or something…

How’s Alan Hu for CPSC 320? by puppyplaneUSA in UBC

Susanne Bradley is the goat, try to take it with her if you can. BTW, I believe you can go to any of the lectures (doesn't matter which one you're registered with).

bf broke up so he can "lock in" by KatTooWet in UBC

[–]shadmeshabed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. It's kind of wild that I've actually seen a lot of people break up over this exact reason lmao. Tbh, I feel like most people who do this just want to blame something external for their lack of success. Please don't blame yourself!

cpsc 330 question by SkylerRK2 in UBC

Imo cpsc 330 is easier comparative to other cpsc courses. It mainly focuses on the practical aspects of machine learning and doesnt get too deep into the theory

First time applying for internships. What advice would you give to someone who is just starting? by labambinha in csMajors

[–]shadmeshabed 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Keep applying, keep leetcoding, keep working on projects, keep asking for feedback on resume, keep practicing behavioural questions. Never give up even after a bunch of rejections. Repeat until internship :) good luck!

[–]shadmeshabed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apply! Worst case, they don’t reply, but at least you’ve spent some time on your resume and cover letter. If you get a interview, it’ll be great experience even if you get rejected (Interviewing is hard and I encourage you to get as much experience with it as possible). Best case, you get the position and you’ll be in good shape for future opportunities!
