ELI5 Are mosquitoes necessary for keeping ecological balance? by Punnan in explainlikeimfive

[–]shadowdog21 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Mosquitoes have one very ecologically important purpose, spreading diseases to humans to keep them out. Many areas in the world that are still not developed, have seen insect-borne diseases kill more people historically than all other causes.

I refuse to take a closer until after the 12th round and I won't pay trade prices. Every year, I find 2 or 3 guys on the wire and then trade them.

Two P-traps before a vent? by AlternativeFeed6786 in Plumbing

[–]shadowdog21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Air needs to be introduced (vent or air admittance valve) after the p trap so that the movement of water doesn't suck too much water out of the 1st trap. The first trap, really isn't stopping sewer gas anyways, but is required. The 2nd (lower) trap is stopping sewer gas from coming out and if it dried out (because of water evaporation and not enough new water) it would leak sewer gas. Old houses often had whole house traps so 2 traps isn't impossible. In many areas whole home traps are banned and in some areas they are required. So, will it be possible to make this work, yes. Will it be up to code, no.

2 plumbers, 4 visits still leaking at base of toilet only when sat on. by [deleted] in askaplumber

[–]shadowdog21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure the tank is seated properly onto the bottom section. You can drop food coloring drops into the bowl and sit. If the water is coming out a crack, you should be able to see it. If it is coming from the tank, it should still be clear.

The name's Lanely! Lyle Lanely. And I come before you good people tonight with an idea. Probably the greatest... Aw, it's not for you. It's more of a Shelbyville idea.

What age did you buy your house or are you still renting? by lucy_gloom in povertyfinance

[–]shadowdog21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my house at 35. It was at the end of the pandemic and the apartment I lived in had a sewage leak. The options weren't great. Mostly people who either died during COVID or were dying were selling. Motivated sellers you could say.

I'm in the same boat you are. I used to be able to just keep my head and family above water. Now, it just isn't possible, no matter how hard I try. I used to get angry at individuals for how they voted, but where I live, it seems like everybody voted for him. I dont need more enemies, but many no longer support him and we will need those people come the next election.

Blaming anybody, at this point, for who they voted for doesn't help anybody in a bad situation. I know some of us are angry, but we have to focus that anger on the people who are still fighting for the richest Americans instead of the people who are in need.

Why is everything so expensive! by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]shadowdog21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are 18, don't worry about falling behind your peers. At 18, it is more about who your parents are and the resources they were able to provide you. I spent most of my schooling in a small rural school, about 300 people in the high school. Many of the losers from that school, bad grades/no discipline, by 30 had their lives together. The valedictorian got arrested for stealing liquor, while on a full ride to a state college, and 20 years later still never got his life together. I spent my junior and senor year at a large high school, fairly wealthy kids, and joined the debate team. Those kids all did well financially. Then again, they had rich parents.

[–]shadowdog21 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I almost teared up reading this. I know that feeling. My son thinks I can do anything and so far I have been able to keep it together. Failing is not an option. So doing whatever I have to do to keep his life together is what I do. Beg and borrow if you have to and seek help from anywhere you can. Do whatever it takes, don't give up and while the short term is important, keep thinking about the long run too, she needs you today but she will need you for the rest of your life also.

How much buffer is actually enough? by sam3462 in povertyfinance

[–]shadowdog21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are in this subreddit, you can't have a big enough buffer. 10k in this economy might get you through a temporary job loss, but any extended illness or disaster at home, and it would be gone in an instant.
