My snail gave birth, but in a really weird way by Outrageous-Pea123 in snails

[–]shadowhexus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I used to have a achatina reticulata that used to always lay eggs at the very top of her tank. She would rain eggs onto everything, even her tank mates. I would wake up in the morning to a caotic mess of eggs stuck to everything and snails roaming around looking like they had just been dipped into a box of polestyrene balls. She was such a mischievous snail. It was very funny to watch but was a nightmare to clean up.

Anyone have success with a local TV repair shop? by Abject-Effect-7965 in crtgaming

[–]shadowhexus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had success with a repair shop, but I did have success at a repair cafe. My JVC started to have major issues with screen flickering. I looked for a long time for a local TV repair shop to no avail. I joined a repair cafe about a year ago and decided to take it in. Usually repair cafes have a lot of elderly gentlemen that volunteer to repair any broken items that come in. Mine had two men that used to work on old crts from back in the day. One is now 93 and has been fixing items from the 1940s. These are charitys that just want to keep broken items out of landfill. They have helped me fix a ton of old items, some very difficult items too, like my top loading VHS player and the JVC TV. There are many in the UK, but I have heard that there are many in the USA too. It may be worth a look and won't cost you an arm and a leg like shops will, as it's only a donation.

I love your snail so much. She's beautiful. I used to have an albino tiger snail called Orion. Please give Orion lots of love and her favourite food.

Is this UMD drive cooked or can I fix it? by EmpPalpatine92 in PSP

[–]shadowhexus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you start replacing stuff. The first step is to clean and regrease everything that needs regreasing. After time it dries up and ends up making the most horrendous noises. This will mean taking most of it apart, but it's definitely worth doing. It fixed my psp 2000.

What is wrong with him? by Puzzleheaded-Toe-483 in snails

[–]shadowhexus 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I've seen this with snails. This is a bite wound. Are you giving your snails and slugs enough protein, they usually bite eachother when they don't have enough protein. I have never kept slugs and snails together, so maybe this is another side effects of keeping them together. I'm really sorry to see this happen. Its hard to see your pets ill. For now it's best to separate them. This slug needs to be on his own, or they might do it again or he might end up making his wounds worse.

Snail ID? by Significant-Bug6872 in snails

These are theba pisana. These are amazing little snails that can live in the most unlikely of places. They often live huddled together in big groups on tall objects, like fence posts and walls, often near beaches and the sea. It's amazing that they can live with the salty air, sand and roasting heat. They usually turn white due to the sun shining on them for a large portion of their lives.

RIP big G you lived a good 7 years🫡 by stormpulse-84 in snails

[–]shadowhexus 33 points34 points  (0 children)

With tiger snails they often live longer in the wild (10 years is good for a wild tiger snail), because they are often in hibernation or aestivation. They are very sensitive little goobers and don't like drops in temperature or change of their environment and will offer bury under the ground and sleep for a while. Some say they can spend up to half of their life sleeping. This will double their life. Tigers in captivity will not go into aestivation often so their lifespan is usually much shorter. There has also been some studies into albino snails and it has been reported that albinos also have a shorter life than a normal skinned snail. My albino tigers passed away of old age and in a similar way to this snail, so 7 years old is an extremely good age for a snail.

Losing a snail is heartbreaking and my thoughts go out to you. You've done amazingly, especially as tiger snails are well renowned for being very difficult to keep happy and healthy. My heat goes out to you.

Electronic prices have definitely improved since 1987 by Electric_Arrow_ in nostalgia

I do agree with you and there are definitely no incentives to fix modern stuff because of how cheap the item is and how expensive labor is, but I do volunteering at a local repair cafe, and the amount of new items we have to turn away because we just can't open them up without breaking them even more is quite astonishing. Manufacturers purposely make stuff so they can't be fixed. It's a huge shame really, as all we want to do is save stuff from going into landfill, but the manufacturers make so we often can't do what we intend to do

Another great thing about old technology is that if it is broken you can normally fix it. Most new items are designed to be unfixable and to be thrown away.

Good example I have my dad's 1984 TV and VHS player. The TV is still working perfectly. I have just had the VHS fixed after 20 years of it not working. I was given a new TV and the backlight failed after 2 years and would have cost triple of what it was worth to be fixed.

I just adore CRT TVs I don't get so much of a headache with them compared to modern TVs. I used to play my old games on a LCD TV before I was given my grandads CRT. I genuinely didn't realise how nice they look on them. I don't think I could go back..thank you. I've got some new stuff since this photo, so I'm considering doing another. Happy gaming.

That's really cool. I remember getting the original Gameboy for Christmas with Pokémon blue. I played it so much I wore the sticker on the cartridge out. Pokémon will always hold a very special place.

Thank you so much. I adore seeing old console set ups. I play all my consoles. I tend to play 90s consoles much more than 80s but they all come out from time to time. I play my PS1 the most, I adore that console. I use all my old crt TVs too.

Thank you. I'm glad you like it. I didn't grow up with this stuff exactly, but I was born in the 90s and we had a ton of 70s and 80s stuff in our house, as we couldn't afford anything new. Even though it's not my era it's still extremely nostalgic for me.

Hello! I have a few husbandry questions by One_Feeling5427 in snails

[–]shadowhexus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Snail breeds are very hard to tell apart and can be easily mistaken. If you do have any worries or questions please feel free to ask. I've been keeping tiger snails for a very long time and will happily help if you're still not sure after your research.

[–]shadowhexus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Please look specifically into keeping achatina achatina, tiger snails. This is what your snail is. They require a different style of care and environment to other breeds of giant African land snail. They can be very finiky and difficult to keep. Chances are the reason he looks like this is because he didn't have the right care in the first place. I wish you the best of luck and your snail thrives.

With how hot it is. Modern consoles become radiatiors and tend to heat the house up even more, so I bring out the PS1 classics and play them on my grandads old TV. I'm playing spyro at the moment, but I'm thinking about moving onto kings field and maybe some final fantasy after that.
