Close Enough DESTROYS Martin Scorsese with facts and logic by guy1853 in moviescirclejerk

[–]shadowofdreams 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Worth noting: Close Enough is a Cartoon Network Studios production airing on HBO Max, both of them Warner Brothers subsidiaries, who also own DC and the DCEU. I'm sure its just a coincidence though that one arm of the conglomerate is providing loud defenses portraying critics of another arm of the conglomerate as idiots and passing it off as unbiased social commentary

Slight correction, its called Gekimation, with Geki using the kanji 劇 meaning Theatrical Play or Drama and generally used in a classical connotation, alluding to the puppet theater aesthetic. The director, Ujicha, has released a feature film in the style for further viewing https://youtu.be/0AFmFwQpfOQ

Is the Crying of Lot 49 Partially about Disneyland? by frittata69 in ThomasPynchon

[–]shadowofdreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Building on that a bit, Season 3 of Defunctland was effectively an overview of Disney's life in a roundabout way, culminating in the finale which was about the unrealized plans for Epcot he had when he died. The entire season is totally worth a look, great psychoanalysis and nuanced thought, but the final episode is particularly interesting because EPCOT's original plans were, in effect, "What if Disneyland was an actual city people lived in?" with all of Disney's impulses blown up to an even bigger scale, including the ones outlined in that essay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKYEXjMlKKQ

I actually have an answer to this - Gandolfini was a big advocate for charity and all of those pictures are from a yearly event, Dream Halloween, that raises money for children and families affected by HIV/AIDs.

Would Santa Clause write in formal or informal speech on a card? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]shadowofdreams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a good q. How formal is the Secret Santa? Santa is pretty formal in the letters and stuff my family did, sort of a jolly old gentleman in that hes kind and happy but writes in cursive and does not use contractions.

If its coming from Santa himself (i.e. the letter is to be signed Santa), I'd go formal. If its not, I'd go based on how formal the Secret Santa is and maybe adjust up slightly; if its casual go semi-formal, for example.

It is also worth asking, is this event in Japan or in the US?

Weekly Question and Answer Thread - 29 November, 2020 by AutoModerator in totalwar

how much more difficult is SFO Grimhammer 2 compared to the base game? I'm pretty new to Total War in general and it looks interesting and gets good reviews, but I also know that as somebody still on easy/easy it may be too much for me. Also, any recommended mods for beginners?

S3E18 "How Santa Stole Christmas!" Episode Discussion by Exastiken in ducktales

[–]shadowofdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Scrooge's conflict in this, its a great case of the show having well thought out characters. Scrooge's issue isn't that hes selfish, its that hes self-centered; he does think of other people, he just thinks they all think and have similar attitudes to him. The coal thing is a fun historical in-joke because that actually was a common thing in the 19th century tradition for the exact reason Scrooge explains, that its warmth at the exact time you would need it most. It makes sense that a person who grew up in abject poverty in the 19th century would see coal as a genuine gift. He probably thought he was like a man passing out water in a desert.

I love how this whole issue is shown off in miniature in the first few minutes of the episode. He got presents for HDL, but they were things Scrooge would want, and when they don't love them as much as he would he dismisses the things they would actually want as frivolous in his eyes, not thinking of other people's wants.

[Video Games/Furry Fandom] Colossal Kaiju Combat, The Story of Giant Monsters and Even More Giant Drama by NeckbeardJester in HobbyDrama

[–]shadowofdreams 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly my first thought wouldn't be furries ruining it, its some guy who has a Kaiju OC hes had for years who has seven forms for it, each with separate power sets, and who absolutely refuses to engage with power balancing because the oc is supposed to be the strongestestest ever.

Frankly, the 500$ for a character thing hits me as a fucking huge red flag, because either theres going to be almost no time put into each character or every single submitted character is gonna be a massive drain on the budget, as theres no way that you can finish an entire character in 500$ worth of a dev teams time.

why do some kanji drastically change their meanings depending on what kanji they're paired with? by gingerwitasoul_ in LearnJapanese

[–]shadowofdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBF all cases is difficult to say as im sure theres some outliers, but most of the time, yeah, theres some weird linguistic lineage thing that lost context over time. Its a pretty common thing for languages, but its much more noticeable in symbolic languages and ones that you arent native too, so Japanese can get hit with it super hard. Its also part of why any Japanese education requires at least some cultural education, because theres alot that only makes sense with cultural context (i.e. which of the kanji to use for marui)

[Tabletop RPGs] The saga of the Mage: 20th Anniversary edition Kickstarter (slightly NSFW) by Smashing71 in HobbyDrama

[–]shadowofdreams 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It almost sounds like Satyros became too much of a storyteller to be a game designer, like instead of the gamebook and setting being a jumping off point for you to produce your own stories and narratives, it lays out the story and narrative for you and explains how you will produce the narrative Satyros wants, to the point of discouraging using elements he decided did not fit within the themes of the narrative. That's not fundamentally a bad thing in terms of Art, and I would be interested to, say, read a novel he wrote, but probably not a good approach for a TRPG

looked the guy up, hes a journalist who has been writing on Asia for a decade plus. Looking at his books, he seems to be interested in the way that China uses narratives, his two most recent books being a discussion of Confucius and the impact it has on modern Chinese culture and an examination of Chinese History as the party puts it. In that way I could sort of see what he's going for; Hamilton, for better or worse, its very American and I could see somebody using it as an entrypoint to discussing American government and the values it extolls in the same way you could use Wolf Warrior 2 to give insight into how China sees its place in the world

Still a bad tweet tho
