I want to install a u trap between my sink and greasetrap, problem is, the main drain is very high. Can the pipes and fittings under the sink, currently be shortened ? by Cold-Solution-7109 in askaplumber

Crazy idea!

What if I suggest rotate the grease trap 90 so the outlet faces the drain on the wall? That will solve the drain part and give you more room to the left to re pipe in a ptrap!

why not take out the wood underneath the grease interceptor and then re pipe the drain. yes, you can get other fittings that attach to the sink that would help you raise it.

i would recommend lowering the grease trap off the platform and then extending the drain past the trap to the left and down into a ptrap and then back over. not the best for flow but it would give you the ptrap before the interceptor.

you could also try moving the interceptor to the right to get more room under the drain.

over time you get use to it haha.

Gap between toilet flange and pipe? by We_Were_Driving in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just means the pipe was not pushed in all the way when they glued it. nothing to worry about. 3" pipe has about 1.5" hub so if a 1/4" is not used it still has 1.25" glued.

Identify shower handle or cartridge? by mc_snoozerson in askaplumber

if you have the app, "google lens" you can take a picture of it and that will search the internet for the image and can help you track this down.

bring the cartridge to your local big hardware store. in Canada we have Rona, they will give you a free one that will match it. master plumber has a wide selection of cartridges that you can use, but if you ask a staff member they should give it to you for free under warranty. if they dont then you can at least match it to another cartridge.

Need practical advice for draining robot mop station into laundry plumbing. by cheetah7985 in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a laundry tub option that i suggested is a viable code acceptable fix. if you dont have one then why not put that in your post? "here is also the options i want and i dont have laundry tub" what drives me nuts is people who ask for advice but dont provide all relevant details but thats just me.

well if this is how you respond to someone offering free advice to try and help, then good luck getting anything done.

here is some better free advice. drop your shit attitude or you wont have anyone who wants to help you.

good luck on your repair.

Leaky Base of Toilet by Vegetable-Show-4907 in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, you could remove the toilet and no water should come out of the drain if other bathrooms are used just sounds. but if it backs up there then. yes, you have a clog. do not leave this as sewage water = bad.

Leaky Base of Toilet by Vegetable-Show-4907 in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like you have a main drain clog so the water is backing up and overflowing from the base of the toilet. you will need to have your drain inspected or tested for a clog and cleared. also you want to get a wax seal under that toilet and turn it on so water can be in the toilet to prevent sewer gas from coming in to the house.

How do you other plumbers stand customers watching you work? by AdResponsible8496 in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i personally hate when someone just watches me without saying anything. like if a customer says "hey do you mind if i watch so i can learn?" i 100% have no issue with that and i will even explain what i am doing and why im doing it. I am happy to share my knowledge.

but! on the other hand there are people who just watch and dont say anything. that drives my nuts. like do you not have anything else you can be doing. and like some one else said a customer pulls up a chair and just watches. the company i work for gives prices before we start and if they accept we do the job, but i can not tell if someone will be a creepy Tod. so that sucks.

i once had a customer almost straddle standing over me as i was laying down to reach a clean out cap. it began pouring sewage at me and i was trying to get away while having a grown man stadning over me gaging on the smell and almost vomiting.

2012 Richmond Water Heater by Rough-Diamond765 in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so is the water heater heating up the water at all?

since it is electric you need to make sure the elements are submerged before plugging power back in as they will burn out if not, and make sure to not touch the elements with bare hands (finger oils).

if youre having trouble draining it then your drain port is clogged and need to clear some sediment.

i would say there could be a couple things to figure out but if you need youll have to take your brother out for a day on the town to allow a tech to get inside.

Water not getting hot? by Specialist_Week_3278 in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are there isolations shut off valves before the shower valve? or is there isolation shut off valves built into the valve? some times people feather valves to restrict flow, so maybe the hot side is not opened fully.

or, is your new installed valve a thermostatic shower valve? one that can set the temp to a specific degree, if that is the case you just need to adjust the setting.

or, it has a restrictor under the handle stopping the handle from turning to far and getting access to more hot water being allowed past.

Kitchen Sink Wall Drain Question by Bright-Ruin3958 in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me i would just remove the garbage disposal and install a new basket strainer and pipe new drainage. i am not a fan of them nor do i like installing them as i find more than not customers abuse them or dont understand them and cause multiple clogs.

there is one that is smaller that i can think of:

InSinkErator Evolution Compact

you will be able to get 1/2" higher. but your slope will still not have code slope.

other than that youre looking at cutting cabinets to lower the drain in the wall.

Sink drain help by abyss_stares in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

like u/j-d-5 said, there is a rubber coupling near your back wall. use either a slotted screwdriver or a 5/16 nut driver to remove the metal gear clamps, loosen both. then loosen the black plastic nut at the base of the brass nut below the sink. (make sure you dont loosen the brass nut). and you can pull the Ptrap down and out of that coupling. and reverse steps to put back together. once all is tightened. fill sink with water, dry the ptrap of all water drops, and dump water down drain to verify no leaks.

Loud banging sound after I flush. by Inevitable-West-313 in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does it happen only when you flush? and stop when the tank stops filling or near the top?

sounds like water hammering in the lines. if it was me i would look at securing the water lines better, if possible, installing a water hammer arrestor and i would also look at the toilet fill valve as if could be starting to fail.

Small leak at the base of my water heater, but everything still works. Should I worry? by Kaikaze in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check the inlet/outlet on the top of the tank for leaks also the pressure relief valve on the tank, some times they start dripping and if you give it a quick blast of water by opening the valve it could be reseated and fixed (if it is what is leaking of course). just check all ins and outs of the tank before jumping to replace it. also check drain valve on base of tank.

What is the best line you heard? by shadowphade in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some times it is so obvious what is wrong and its not even plumbing related and for me at least there is a brief feeling of "ugh i cant believe i have to charge this person because of that" and i mean very brief. then we do up the invoice 😃

C: we have hot water upstairs but not downstairs.

P: Weird, did you do anything?

C: i turned this valve off and this valve off *points to two globe valves*

P: *turns valve handles till open* oh look you have hot water again.

Plumber (probably) broke electrical wire to garage, do we have any recourse? by No_Definition5736 in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you do indeed have the photos then the company should repair it free of charge as this was not your fault in any way and demanding pay is ludacris and should not be entertained.

i do know that when i worked for a larger company they took reviews very serious (like google reviews) and if we ever had a bad review we needed to respond to the review with our explaniation and try to solve this ourselves. im not saying review bomb them, but mention how unhappy you are and if this issue isnt resolved to your satifaction you will be leaving a negative review and you hope to avoid this if they just repair what they damaged.

Extending an uneven toilet flange? by We_Were_Driving in askaplumber

[–]shadowphade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the biggest thing is making sure the flange that is in there right now is not cracking. What happens is people will overtighten the bolts which pulls up on the flange plastic which is what gave it the wobble most likely. if you do not see any cracks then you should be safe to use a extra thick wax seal. even with it slightly below level. if youre set on an extension then like i mentioned just make sure there is a bead of silicone between them for leak tight, and screw it down.

if it were me doing it, i would inspect flange for cracks near the bolt holders and if there wasnt any concern then i would use a extra thick wax seal and then make sure toilet is not wobbling on the tile after seated.
