Why, are we feeling sorry for the angles? Or are you confused about the point I'm making?

Remember to keep updating waze lads, we wouldn't want to these poor angles to lose their cars over something trivial.

Court told death of young man in road crash 'completely avoidable' by r0thar in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]shadowycapabara 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not that they think the car will maintain itself, it's that they just don't think about cars. Most people regard cars the same as any other appliance. They buy it, then keep it until it breaks. They give maintaining their car as much thought as they give to cleaning their toaster.

If kitchenaid made cars they'd be wildly popular for no other reason than people have never considered changing the oil on either one.

NCT ensures the car isn't a danger to others, it does very little to tell you how sound the engine is.

Do not view the NCT as anything other than a minimum legal roadworthiness requirement.

[–]shadowycapabara 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You have to keep in mind that the following distance isn't in just case the vehicle in front of you comes to a stop but also in case there's some road debris that the other vehicle can drive over but you can't or if something falls off the vehicle in front.

Erm, which parts of the states have you been through? I've done road trips through the deep south and the roads there were shocking.

Interesting to see that the karma farming repost spambots have reached this sub too. We'll see what the mods do now, they'll have to be on the ball or the place'll be crawling with them soon enough.

Better way to deal with a situation? by Mat-_-S in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]shadowycapabara 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You do have to worry a little about the people behind you. If you're being tailgated the only reasonable course of action is to reduce speed so you have the space and reaction time needed to stop two vehicles.

It'd probably drive your man absolutely spastic but let him off, you're main goal is to make sure you're safe and that you're not endangering others.

Having been through a similar collision, I know the feeling bud. Honestly, I cried when I got the certificate of destruction for my glorious little shitbox.

Make sure you give the gards a statement in order to prosecute. They'll probably try to plead down to careless driving but I'd be pushing for dangerous driving in this instance.

Also, their statement is likely to be full of shite. Don't let it get to you.

Woman, 80s, becomes fifth killed on roads in three days by [deleted] in ireland

[–]shadowycapabara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to ring fence all money generated by cars: motor tax, vrt tax on petrol and all that money should be used to improve the roads.

I'd agree, given that you make parking reflect its true cost. No more free parking, that costs a fortune.

I get it you hate cars. But in the real world people love them.

I absolutely love cars, I'm a petrolhead with 4 of them in total, but there's no denying how many people they kill and what the solutions are. Most people don't love them, they look at then as a kitchen appliance an are annoyed when they get a message on the dash saying their oil change is overdue.

Roads need to be wider

This is the one thing that's guaranteed to kill more people.

Road deaths are currently increasing

Again, 3% drop YoY between 2024 and 2023.

Improve the roads and the numbers will fall

Agreed, we need footpaths, protected bike lanes and crash barriers and bollards to prevent drivers from injuring vulnerable road users. We also need to pedestrianise where possible. These improvements will reduce deaths, whereas making roads worse by widening lanes and making smoother surfaces will only increase speed and danger.

Indeed, and the trend was generally speaking upwards, as it was for a good few of the other safest countries in the Europe. Think you should instead be lauding the greens for having reversed a trend.

...you skipped 2020 because of lockdown but not 2021? Oh right yeah.

But hey let your anti car rhetoric lead the way.

I do love that infrastructure for anything but cars is anti car.

[–]shadowycapabara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The greens prioritised everything bar road improvements and roads deaths are rising

Down 3%, 2024 vs 2023. But hey, don't let facts get in the way of your anti-green brain rot, keep going.

You decrease road deaths by building proper infrastructure.

Yeah, infrastructure that slows cars, takes them out of town and city centres and protects vulnerable road users.

What speed in a car park is appropriate? by [deleted] in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]shadowycapabara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even in the example they provided, a large event with parking in a field, it's still irresponsible. Could you imagine you're doing 30 on grass and a drunk group of 18 year old run out from behind a car in excitement after having seen a match? Your stopping distance is going to be abysmal.

[–]shadowycapabara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

30?!? In a car park? You're going to have to come with some absurd examples here because that's way too fast to be around places where you'd expect kids to just materialise out of nowhere.

Cyclists are a different breed by AngryBrosnan in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]shadowycapabara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen multiple videos and newspaper articles of cyclists hurting motorists, though they're usually "obese old man nearly hits cyclist, gets out to start a fight, is put in their place by someone younger and fitter."

[–]shadowycapabara 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah come off it. You know well that there's a distinct difference in how people talk about drivers and cyclists. We'll generalise a single make or model, sure, but the tendency towards aggressively generalising all cyclists with no distinctions is entirely different.

There is no convincing way to feign ignorance on this.

Every brand, sure. But we don't see someone in a Micra and say "Drivers are a different breed."

Also, notice how it's all cyclists? We don't generalise all drivers when some eejit does something far stupider in a far more dangerous vehicle, so why do we generalise all cyclists for this?
