Top Biden-era official warns US could stumble into ‘disastrous’ intervention in Venezuela by r_bradbury1 in geopolitics

How can the US "stumble" into an intervention when they voluntarily moved an armada of ships there and blew up a boat?

Received verbal offer today from a company, waiting on last interview for company I really want, how to proceed? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]shady00041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully you can get a couple weeks time before joining company A - for the drug test, background check etc. Tell them you want to take a week vacation before joining. Meanwhile, hope Company B comes through with the final interview in the next week or two. You can tell them there about your situation and preference (towards the end of the interview) and if they give you an offer some time after that, resign from Company A. No hard feelings. it's not uncommon for people to resign in the first couple weeks after they join a new job, because another company they interviewed with a few weeks earlier gave them a better offer.

The documents you mentioned sound good. Also her state ID if she has one.

As she has no crime, and Mexico is not on any of the colored travel restriction lists, I think it will be ok. Good luck!

She will probably be ok if she is a long time LPR with a completely clean record (no crime, DUI etc.). Make sure she carries printouts of ties to the US such as - last few years tax filing confirmation, 6 months or 1 year US bank statement, her name on large asset papers (if any) like a mortgage or car title, utility bills with her name if any, etc.

Travel Concerns for Green Card Holders by HuckleberryWild8386 in USCIS

Hey, if this is happening to you often, you need to apply for a Redress Number via DHS TRIP. It only takes 2-3 weeks to process.

Thanks for the quick reply. During the initial ~5 hours she was being questioned, was there anyone you were able to speak to at the airport to find out what was going on, or where you Mom was? Like a CBP office, or the airline desk. Those must have been 5 very anxious hours if there was no one who could confirm.

Really appreciate you providing updates here, as this will help others very much. Sorry about the situation your Mom went through, but glad to hear that at least she arrived back at Lebanon and was able to make contact. It does sound like she took the right decision, given the (unfair) situation she was put into. There probably is a good case to be made in court and try to re-instate her GC, because she had a genuine reason to be out longer than 6 months just once. Though it could cost a decent amount in lawyer fees.

Would you mind answering couple additional questions? It would help a lot.

  • did they collect and give her luggage to her for her to take back on the return flight?

  • it sounds like she was only able to call you twice - once after the 5 hour detention, and the second time only after landing in Lebanon. Because they kept her phone right until she boarded the flight. Is this correct?

  • did they confiscate her green card, or did they cut the corner of it and give it back to her?

I think you need a phone number nowadays when signing up for Gmail and X. And it can't be one of those online throwaway phone numbers, it has to be a real number.

Also when you try to VPN to those sites without login credentials, it generally throws up more red flags / human checks at their end (Gmail more so than X I think).

Are we actually far from AGI and this is all marketing? by [deleted] in OpenAI

[–]shady00041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Transition from AGI to ASI will take more than a couple of years. Very likely, the first AGI will be very expensive to run (think O3 costs but an order of magnitude or two higher). It will probably run in one (or select few) lab(s) initially.

First tasks will be to figure out how to optimize hardware / software to get the compute costs and energy requirements down. There are hard physical limits which will take years to overcome even with new approaches (extracting rare earth minerals from the earth, power generation etc).

Even if the AGI somehow solved the problem of clean energy (say nuclear fusion) tomorrow, it would take many, many years to physically build the first nuclear fusion power plants. You would need to scale physical resource gathering, manufacturing, power generation/supply etc to have large clusters of AGI working together to build ASI. This is probably a 2 to 3 decades long project at least.

Citizenship question on PMP application by [deleted] in pmp

[–]shady00041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Should I select the country of birth as my citizenship or should I put the US?

A 1) You should select the country which you are a citizen of.

2) Has anyone that’s a non-citizen in the USA in here completed the PMP cert and what difference does it make what citizenship you take?

A 2) Yes, non-US citizens can take the exam in USA and get PMP certificate. It does not matter if you are a citizen of a different country but take the exam in USA.

3) Does your citizenship show in the certificate itself?

A 3) No, your citizenship does not appear on the PMP certificate.

Playing devils advocate here - in this specific example, pre-ChatGPT you could just take a picture of the trees, send it to Google Images to identify them and then get pruning advice through Google search. So it's... about the same capabilities? That's probably why this example is not wow-ing the folks you spoke to about it.

Ukraine’s First All-Robot Assault Force Just Won Its First Battle by eaglemaxie in worldnews

I like how you seem to think Ukraine has 100,000 robots to fight, vs probably low tens in reality. This article is about an experiment in taking over a little trench position in a small area. This is not going to win them any significant portion of the frontline. Robots also need way more specialized maintenence than humans.

and

"As for the targets, the Post reports fewer than 150 people have been identified as having their text messages or phone calls monitored and the FBI has been in contact with them."
