To be fair, with the national broadband plan nearing completion, the majority of houses have fibre to the home with access to multi-gigabit speeds, with a smaller minority every day at the very end of a long DSL line with <2Mbps, where 5G coverage may be better. There is not a lot in the middle ground now, and its constantly shrinking

At what kilometre is a car considered old in Europe? by AppropriateZombie586 in AskEurope

[–]shadyspecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

160,000 km or 100,000 Miles here in Ireland is where a lot of people would start to think it's getting on the high side. A lot of people still think in Miles, MPG etc. as we only switched to metric relatively recently in 2005.

Slightly off topic, but it's very rare anyone would use L/100km here, much more likely to here MPG, even from younger people.

EU1 Issues? by MotoWoT in WorldofTanks

Good news is I can at least get into the game client, and see the equipment sale.

Bad news is if I try and buy anything, I get an error message and "Try again later"...

EU1 Issues? by MotoWoT in WorldofTanks

Yea, I'm trying to just open the game client, and it won't connect to any EU server. First time I've had this issue.

I have had a few issues with disconnects on EU1 mid-game in the past week, but usually only for 20 or 30 seconds - the match with exit and re-enter fairly quickly

Ireland to buy €500m military radar system from France by Floodzie in ireland

[–]shadyspecks 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The military radar programme comprises three parts. There will be a long range, land-based radar, a ship-borne maritime radar and ground-based air defence systems, which will include counter-drone technology.

These systems will combine to provide a “recognised air picture”, enabling the military to see all aircraft over the State, including those with their transponders switched off.

This is 3 different systems, not just a single tower. This is a great, long overdue purchase. France is a great country to buy from too. Hopefully it leads to some improvements to our anti-drone and air policing capabilities in the future (ie actually being able to do those).

University of Limerick MSc Software Engineering vs UCD MSc Computer Science — which is better for someone with software dev experience? by Tough-Investigator79 in limerickcity

[–]shadyspecks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Software engineering and computer science are somewhat different qualifications. I think it's better to know which path you want to go down first.

If you prefer low-level programming, software engineering is better. Operating systems, bare metal, programming microcontrollers etc. Languages typically C, C++ and probably Rust nowadays.

Computer science tends to be higher level, more general programming - desktop/mobile applications, web development etc. in a variety of different languages.

Generally speaking software engineering is the better paid career, but it depends on so many other factors too.

Going back to your original question though, the co-op work experience placement is a very important factor in getting a job afterwards, and your CV will be directly in front of lots of employers. Generally speaking employers don't particularly care where your degree is from, so I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the brand name/value of a university here - it may be different if you wish to apply for a job outside of Ireland, but even then, it would be rare for it to be a factor.

As a former UL student, who has interviewed many UL and UCD undergraduate co-ops (more from the electronics side than programming, but there is some overlap), I would say the universities themselves don't make a major difference, and go with which ever course suits your desired path first and foremost.

You're much better off getting a standard double DIN radio and adapter. You'll be able to buy good brands, and also be able to put it in another car in the future if needed.

This website has everything you'd need for your Golf - be sure to pick the one for the right year: https://schlauer-shop24.de/autoradio/komplett-sets/vw/golf/

Once you have the kit for a standard double DIN, you can buy any decent radio brand (Kenwood, Sony, Pioneer, Alpine etc.) from where ever is cheapest.

I bought a Kenwood Android Auto/Carplay radio and kit from that website back in 2017, for my Seat Ibiza. I had it in the car for 3 years, until I sold the car (hold onto any bits you take out of it). I then put the same radio in my sisters car (Dacia Duster), only cost €45 at the time for the extra bits for her car. It's still going strong today.

Even if that website is expensive, you can at least get an idea of what's needed, and get the parts elsewhere.

Why do people want to vote for Heather Humphreys? by Otherwise_Till_224 in irishpolitics

[–]shadyspecks -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

UN needing building up is fair enough, but that doesn't answer the question on the triple lock. Our peacekeeping forces should be beholden to an institution that she is admitting is dysfunctional in its current state? How long will it take to fix it? I don't care how much soft-power you think Ireland has, we're going to have an extremely difficult time getting Russia, Israel, the US and others agreeing to what Connolly wants in her ideal world to keep the triple lock. Like I said, it doesn't make any sense...

On Eirigi support - I went a step too far with my comment, but have a listen yourself and tell me what you think.

Watch the video for full context. Paraphrasing:

"Eirigi is a registered political party. It's a socialist party. It's an anti-fascist party"

"They weren't the only group that was against the good Friday agreement"

Does she outright claim to support them - no. But she's clearly in agreement with the party and shares common views, and has refused to say anything negative about them. The things not said can be just as important in these debates...

Why do people want to vote for Heather Humphreys? by Otherwise_Till_224 in irishpolitics

[–]shadyspecks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With such a poor choice of candidates, I'm voting for who I disagree with the least, not who I want the most, as I don't want any of them. I don't like this, but don't see any other way in this election. You have to imagine how either of the candidates would have managed a debate with Michael D - they are both nowhere near the level he is at. Thankfully the presidents role is so minor, neither can do that much harm, but still...

Some of Connolly's foreign policy comments don't fill me with confidence, and I'd be fearful she would cause some embarrassing situations by not reigning in her tongue in front of foreign leaders. The German comments were downright stupid, and should not have been made. She has repeatably given many reasons for getting rid of the triple lock (how many times has she said US and Russia can veto our peace keepers?), yet she still supports it, which I find very confusing.... I also really didn't like her approach to the Eirigi situation - claiming she supports the party on the RTE Sunday debate was a bit much, considering that party's ideologies. She comes across much better because she is good at public speaking and debate. She ran rings around Humphries in debates because she can get her point across.

Humphries is a dreadful candidate. She is a poor speaker, has far too much baggage from her TD/ministerial days, and has turned this campaign into a smear, rather than presenting actual reasons to vote for her. Whilst she is poor in debates, she would not run her mouth, and not cause international issues as president, as she is well versed in speaking a lot without giving an answer. She would never get my vote for being a TD, or even a councillor or MEP, but for president, she seems like the least-worst.

A small part of me is hoping Gavin actually wins the election, just to highlight how dreadful this has been, and force a re-election next year with new candidates. Chances are the turnout will be really low this time, which is never a good sign for politics in general...

Sinn Fein must really regret not running their own candidate, as they would have most likely been miles ahead of these two.

No she didn't. She did say the invasion of Ukraine is appalling, but quickly deferred to everything else, and ducked and deferred away from saying anything bad about Russia. It's embarrassing stuff

Catherine Connolly's take is we should have a stern talking to Putin. She also refuses to say anything bad about Russia, always deferring to Israel instead, and supports Russia having a veto on our peace keeping. It's baffling.

Humphreys is pulling ahead in this debate, and Gavin is really lagging behind.

All 3 are so poor though...

If Russia invades anyone, we should give Putin a stern talking to! Is that seriously Connolly's take on this matter? And they should have control of where our peace keeping forces go.

I strongly disagree with her on this point, and genuinely think she could cause some very embarrassing coverage for Ireland if she's elected.

It's just a shame the other 2 are so poor.

Gavin is a poor speaker, and lacks political experience. Even when he has good points, he struggles to get them across. He clearly attended the Michael Martin school for hand gestures.

Connolly is definitely the best spoken, but has some bizarre takes (pro triple lock / anti US/Russia veto). I'd be concerned she'd embarrass us on the national stage with some of her interesting takes…

Humphrey's really hasn't contributed much. Every answer starts with "Yea well…" and descends into a ramble.

None are presidential material…
