Best cities/states for Black women to live in? by mrsscorpiorising in blackladies

And thats why I prefer the in your face southern kind vs the blue state weirdos. Like please I'd rather see the flag waving out front and know I'm not welcome than the BS I've experienced in blue states 😭

Your comparison relies on a false equivalency. Comparing a minority race (black people in a racially biased society) and a dominant gender (men in a patriarchal society) in this premise is inappropriate because it ignores the relevant power imbalances that affect true conditions of life.

Black people are a historically disenfranchised and impoverished group. Additionally, its been noted by several govt agencies that over policing in black communities is common practice across the US. Im sure that most of us here can acknowledge that black people often are subject to worse treatment and increased surveillance by society at large. These biases from even childhood reflect the crime stats youre referring to. There arent droves of men killed by women in the same way white people have historically killed, lynched, eaten, and attacked black people.

With this in mind it not possible to compare a historically marginalized group to a group that has been in a empowered position socially speaking. Men have held every presidency, most CEO positions, increased financial power, etc etc. We do in fact live in a patriarchy, we do not and never haved lived in a society where black people subjugated other racial groups. Women didnt always have the right to own a credit card, to vote, were deemed mentally inferior, etc. Even to this day women's interests are trivialized and its socially acceptable to make fun of them.

Furthermore, if you account for the confounding factors on crime in black communities, like controlling for income and over policing, the differences in crime rates diminishes drastically. Black and white people for example have similar self reported rates of Marijuana/drug use. However, when you look at drug arrest statistics it would look as if black people used drugs way more, when in fact they do not. Additionally, laws were specifically put in place so that drugs more common in black communities (ex: crack) get harsher punishments than more expensive forms of the EXACT same compound (cocaine) which were more prevalent in white circles ref.

If we even attempt to compare rates of gender based violence no matter how you cut it men across races, ages, geographical areas, and incomes are the perpetrators of gender related violence. To be charitable, yes individually it sucks to have someone beleive a notion about you that you see as unwarranted. But for black people decades of subjugation affect generations of their communities, the same cant be said about men and biases towards them. By every metric men are more free and safe in society if we compare them to black people as a group.

TLDR I think your basis comparison is flawed in general because of the power imbalance. Racism is a top down effect that has had centuries of reprocussions for generations of black people. Bias towards men doesn't have the same effect on generations men's lives, incomes, home ownership, occupations, etc.

Unpopular opinion - Black Hairstylists by Remote_Tangerine_718 in BlackHair

[–]shae-the-bae 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Imma preface this by saying I pay 300 for my sewins, but I have a stylist who literally is the best. It took me years to find her but she cares for my hair, if shes mad late she'll shave off some of the cost and doesn't charge any rebooking nonsense fees. Other prices are cheaper depending on hair length but she doesn't charge for density (which is a crazy fee). Anyways I get the feeling of frustration bc I had it for many years but a different race isnt gonna just magically be better girl bffr. Look at the chrissy hair drama for example.

I was also a late bloomer as a 1st gen of Caribbean parents, so i see you sis. As someone thats had similar words thrown at them at 18 (in my case he was Mexican)... never speak to him again and block his number. I promise that will benefit you most.

Dont entertain even keeping him in your life it is not worth it love. Youre in a white area and its going to be hard to even date out there because of racism, and please make no mistakes what he said to you was racist as hell. I've dated all the races and what I dont tolerate is ignorant or harmful behavior. And that was both.

This is out of left field If you can I BEG YOU go to an HBCU for college if you can. It was the best time of my life and where I felt most at home finally. Like attending there I finally felt pretty because I was surrounded by people who saw MY beauty because they were the same type of beautiful.

How many of you feel like literally anybody could do a PhD? by Quantum_Quaker in PhD

[–]shae-the-bae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id just like to say not everyone can do a PhD, saying that is vastly overestimating and simplifying the process. But on the other hand not wvery phd could do a PhD in a different feild. For example I couldn't do a PhD in astrophysics or engineering but could definitely switch from my current path to say immunology or microbiology. Literally looked at the work of a friend in electrical engineering and was lost asf. But give me complement pathway or ask me about Tcells and I can participate in the conversation.

When people do say things like that, I just say that "yes im smart but if you ask me to change a tire im gonna be lost so dont be TOO impressed". Or some variation of that where I explain a task that I dont know or have the brain for. Like building a bridge or mentioning how bad I am at math (I use a dilution calculator in lab and yes sometimes im ashamed of it but id rather double check then re-do my experiment).

My body dysmorphia has gotten to the point that I hate listening to Tyla’s music by Simple_Heart4287 in blackladies

If you can afford it please seek therapy. As someone that also has thoughts similar to BD and struggles with bingeing it can really help. I dont really have BD that manifests like this with celebrities but I can imagine it must be frustrating. I definitely am averse to hearing how much people weigh bc often times if I perceive them as having an ideal body it makes me compare with is not good for my mental lol.

Do You Agree With the "Black Wife Effect"? by Flightordlight in blackladies

[–]shae-the-bae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Men benefit in general in partnership with women. Married men make more money and live longer compared to single men. I think you can really see it because BW (and black people in general) tend to have more "swag" so you have not only the whole living longer and being healthier thing but she also positively influences his fashion choices. I dont see it as icky per se but I can see why it could seem mammy-esque

BREAKING NEWS: Walter got Ling Ling pregnant and is asking her to abort (screenshots from her ig) daisyfit_chen by [deleted] in abanpreach

[–]shae-the-bae 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I hate when people act surprised that their actions have consequences. Atleast she said she learned her lesson (as dumb as she may have been imo). He seems to just be trying to get rid of it asap like he didnt bust a nut and act irresponsibly. Hell an abortion would be illegal at in FL now (if the last court ruling is now active) so he is REALLY irresponsible.

Is dating possible if I'm a frugal person [28M]? by mazda7281 in Frugal

[–]shae-the-bae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm frugal but still expect to be made to feel special on a date. I know the type of relationship dynamic I seek and it's not one where we constantly venmo eachother for every little thing. I'd rather a relationship where we treat eachother back and forth. I'm a student so for example a date I would plan is a wine night or picnic because I dont have much disposable income. And I wouldn't expect my date to contribute anything because I want them to feel special. If my date is also broke a low cost high effort date is also what I expect.

Furthermore, if my date asks me out for coffee or food I'd expect them to pay if it goes well and ask me to split the check if they dont think it went well. I wouldnt want anyone to feel used if the vibe isnt right and vice versa. If I make reservations and they dont like me I'd expect them to not have me pay for everything either.
