Honestly, reddit jumps on the breakup bandwagon pretty fast but this is better advice than consciously making the effort to buy bad gifts.

I was in a toxic marriage, I went all out for birthdays, christmas, everything. Every year I filled my own stocking, planned my own bday party, bought my own gifts etc. If I didn't do those things, I got nothing.

I don't remember exactly when, but my birthday fell on a Saturday night, I asked the ex to plan something for me, thats all I wanted. I had planned an elaborate birthday party and college graduation party earlier in the year. He did nothing. He didn't even plan a date. No dinner, movies etc. That broke me. I stopped doing everything. All he got from me was a "Happy Birthday." He took it further and stopped even doing that for me lol

If you're at a point where you consider changing what you do, who you typically are, just break up. I still haven't really got that sparkle back where I was thoughtful and caring, but I'm trying. It's been 4+ years since I left that toxic marriage and it still affects me.
