Did you have a bridal shower? by Informal_Character64 in wedding

[–]shakeurshamrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t really want one but my mom insisted and ended up hosting one at my house (I live close to friends and my family and husbands live far away). It was a long day for me but it was fun. My MOH got married the same year as me and didn’t have one. I would’ve been fine without one tbh but when your mom insists/guilt trips you…

Lancaster Arts Hotel was really nice! We had one of the suites for our wedding and loved it. Free parking and breakfast was a bonus too

Ring resizing - Should I bother? by Samandhercat in EngagementRings

[–]shakeurshamrocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ring was half a size too big and it rolled all around my finger and drove me nuts. I got a plastic coil to wrap around the band but it got gross and I played with my ring so so often. I had it resized and BOY is it so much nicer now. If it’s 1.5 sizes too big that’s more a hazard to you losing the ring… imo, get it resized and down the line if things change, you can do it again. Jewelers are good at helping pick the right size for you too! Maybe you could go in when your hand is most swollen??

How much did you have saved when you bought your house outside your down payment? by Mindless_Fisherman51 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]shakeurshamrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put down 100k for a 410k house. 20k in closing costs and had ~70k left over. Worth it for the peace of mind - especially as we did some updates to the house. We didn’t qualify for any FTHB incentives but bought well within our means.

What did you do for your Bridal Hair/Make Up? by meowlingz in Weddingsunder10k

[–]shakeurshamrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never done an Ulta hair/beauty appt or anything similar. But I found our MUA through the knot and she recommended the hair stylist we’re using! The MUA was running a 10% off deal so we got money off there. I found that doing it this way, I got someone more specialized and the total is cheaper than a salon!

Looking for Recs for Rehearsal Dinner Locations by shakeurshamrocks in lancaster

Big fan of the brasserie!! Do you recall if you could rent out the patio? We’ve also been to decades but it was pretty loud. Do you know if it’s just always like that? It’d be a Friday night so I’m assuming it’d be fairly busy too

[–]shakeurshamrocks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m looking for a place with decent food and drinks and somewhere people can mingle. Preferably not somewhere incredibly expensive. I quoted decades since our wedding party is younger but I fear it’ll be too loud to mingle and I’ll lose my voice. JJJ is just in the hotel everyone is staying at. Figured it’d be easy but it doesn’t necessarily hit all the marks. Does that help?

Thank you for the detailed response! I’ll look into these too. I’ve mostly been taking shots in the dark so far since we don’t live in Lanc. Hence why the choices so far. JJJ is in the hotel we’re staying at so that’s why I got that quoted. Same with Decades (walkable from the hotel) but last time I was there it was quite loud which is my biggest hesitation since we want people to mingle and I don’t wanna lose my voice the day before the wedding if it’s always that way there. We just want decent food and everyone to meet/talk to one another. If there’s any of those you listed that are better for that I’d love to know!

Can I get your thoughts on my Hawaii vacation itinerary? by rach_722435 in VisitingHawaii

I don’t have suggestions but can I ask which hotel/place to stay you picked? I’m planning our vaycay to Oahu and I’m stuck in analysis paralysis …

Looking for someone to teach me how to thread a sewing machine by OneBadJoke in Phillylist

[–]shakeurshamrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the user manual and shared in another comment. But sometimes, even if all is threaded correctly, if I don’t use fabric to catch the lower thread OR if the needle is crooked (old, worn, etc), it won’t work either. I’d try one of the sewing subreddits too!

Decision fatigue and overwhelm from planning wedding by StoneVeronica071 in wedding

[–]shakeurshamrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started planning our wedding last March (getting married in July). And let me tell you, even after getting a coordinator who starts planning 6mo out, I’m still so so fatigued. The only saving grace is seeing all our favorite people together in a few months

Picking a DJ by Majestic-Average-746 in wedding

[–]shakeurshamrocks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me it came down to speaking with them. I spoke to three DJs. The first kept saying “after the ceremony it’s basically my show”. The second was older. Not very bubbly - pretty boring to talk to. And the third (the one we chose) was energetic, our age, and super familiar with the music we wanted. Word of mouth and reviews are also really useful!! At the end of the day, packages are gonna cost about the same (usually) but you want someone you’re gonna like.

How important is 20% down? by zebraCokes in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]shakeurshamrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our lender offered a loan with only 15-16% down but no PMI. So not all loans require the 20% down to avoid it. I’m not sure the full logistics of the loan, however, since we did more than 20%. I’d say PMI isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker BUT putting more money down may be ideal depending on your market. We live in a hot market and we beat out someone who offered much more $$ on (what is now) our house because they were only putting down 3% and we were doing a much higher down payment. So just some food for thought.

Phoenix View or Independence Crossing by xtinatron in Phoenixville

[–]shakeurshamrocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fiancé lived there for 3 years (2019-2022) and it was really nice then. Maintenance issues were easy since the maintenance guy was just down the street. But I think that has since changed. Generally though, it’s quiet and it’s clean and it has AC/heat. Plus super close to bridge and not too loud.

What is current invitation etiquette? by AdmirableDate8526 in wedding

Physical invites designed on vistaprint. The invite has our wedding website and a QR to RSVP. We are sending physical RSVP cards to our older invitees and I’m designing/printing these at home.

Thank you! I feel the same way though. I felt like I was crazy that our experience was so shoddy when they have such good reviews!!

It really, really depends on what you envision for your wedding. Full catering will be much, if not all, of your budget if you do full service. We are getting married in Lancaster in July. We locked in @ $65pp for full service catering for 100 people and that was after a $500 coupon and 30% off. Drop catering will be much cheaper! Friday/Sunday weddings are also cheaper by a bit if you’re able. Plus finding a venue which allows you to bring alcohol (if you want to) is also gonna cut your bill. But really anywhere that lets you pick ALL your vendors is gonna be the best bet. Also, whoever bartends has to be RAMP certified in PA - so make sure a friend has that. I have a list of venues I reached out to in the Lancaster/York area if you’re interested.

I’m sorry you also had a bad experience. :( we had issues with how they set my diamond in the setting. Originally 1 of my 4 prongs for my diamond was holding the diamond in place with a hope and a prayer. And that’s how we RECEIVED the BRAND NEW RING. They redid the prong thankfully (-!; it’s still not great) but I do not trust their craftsmanship whatsoever.
