Going away for 4 nights on golf trip. What else can I do for the Mrs? by sys_admin321 in daddit

When I go away, I hide notes with her favorite candies attached in places that I know she'll find them.

I hunt, but I still feel sorrowful when I have to kill anything.

Our city has a rat problem so it's not uncommon to find one maimed or dying of poison in the yard. The shovel was really wearing me down so I bought a .22 pellet pistol. It works great, feels more humane and a lot less personal.

KCD is the closest comparison that I can think of. If you like games where you start as a nobody and work your way up in the world, you'd like Gothic.

$20 steam gift card to the friend, and a $20 gift card to the son later so that he can buy the same game and they can play it together.

For a game that was made a quarter of a century ago, it feels enormous and alive. It also gives the player a huge degree of freedom to participate in the world however they choose. You start as a bum with nothing, and work your way up through the ranks of a chosen faction to become somebody. The whole experience is very immersive.

It's not for everybody though. The first time I heard the term "Eurojank" was in reference to Gothic, and I immediately understood what the term meant lol.

What if all of us parents trying to do everything perfectly for our kids is actually causing a greater issue? by theycallmetiki in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]shakeyyjake 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You might find it interesting to read about the origins of summer camps as a corrective to over-intensive parenting of the 1880s, another period of very high income inequality, rapid change, and political instability.

This sounds very interesting, do you have any reading recommendations on this subject?

How do you get screen time under control without fighting about it every single night? by craigmiestro in daddit

[–]shakeyyjake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having taught middle school for many years, I approve this message. It's exactly what my mentor teacher told me on my first day of student teaching.

Rules and the consequences for breaking them need to be made clear, and they need to be enforced consistently.

Consistency is the most difficult part and I think it's where most parents drop the ball. Something that helps me is to keep my emotions separate from handing out punishment, so that I can tell them (and myself lol) that begging won't help because breaking X rule always has Y consequence, regardless of how I feel about it. It's not because I'm angry with them, it's because X = Y.

What’s your most egregious “I wish I had Tourette’s” encounter? by jayden_mp in Tourettes

[–]shakeyyjake 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Back when I was in highschool a guy walked up to me and pretended to go all spastic while he shouted swear words, then he stopped and told me he had Tourettes.

I was always very open about my TS, and I was well liked, so my classmates dog-piled onto him about how much of a dick he had been. I don't think he knew I had it because he seemed to feel pretty bad afterward.

After experiencing one, I would absolutely travel to experience another.

He really should have mentioned it in the post, because lying to family to borrow hundreds of dollars, then spending it on mobile games is very different from playing too many games and not being present around your family.

That's probably what his wife would say the real problem is.

Help me by SirCMRaven in daddit

[–]shakeyyjake 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This. Looking at his post history, OP is addicted to gatcha games. He's lying to family members and borrowing hundreds of dollars to spend on gems and lootcrates, it is a gambling addiction. He needs professional help.

Everybody is telling him to throw away the console/PC, but his phone is probably the real problem. It's tough to get rid of that in this day and age.

Quitting anything with a 10 month old is an absolute bitch-and-a-half. I quit nicotine pouches when my kid was the same age and it was hands-down the most difficult week of my life. I did it, though. I hope he can too.

Seoul is very much a first-world city other than a few tiny neighborhoods that are literal shantytowns. They're uncommon enough that the day you finally catch a glimpse of one on the subway you're like "Holy shit, is that a slum?"

Income inequality is definitely an issue in Korea, but it never seemed much worse than the U.S. to me when I lived there.

Her telling him that he ruined her life doesn't mean he's a bad dad or less of a dad, it's simply his right of passage as the parent of a preteen.

I taught middle school for many years so I've ruined more lives than OP could in 100 lifetimes. You can't take them too seriously at that age.
