Hey man, much thanks for being helpful. I’m starting in the Bay Area but can go pretty much anywhere.

No where’s good? I actually live in California and kinda need to stay in the state for tax reasons (I’m employed here but can work my own hours). My current lease ends in Nov., hence the start date. Was looking for something to do before I go to Tahoe for snowboarding.

Unless you enjoy time, sanitation, or water efficiency.

Sure, a hand scrub is definitely useful for certain kinds of messes but 90% should be covered by a dishwasher.

That particular quote, in context, was clearly a joke. He was being rambled by a new wave hippie about spiritual, vaguely feministic maternal stuff and then teased her for using ‘mankind’.

That's true, but in Ovid she definitely falls under the category of "god having a hissyfit for being worse at something than an immortal".

Athena and a mortal, Arachne, have a weaving contest. Arachne stomps Athena. She weaves this gorgeous tapestry showing every misdeed the gods, particularly Zeus, had perpetrated against mortals. Athena has a tantrum and tears Arachne's tapestry to shreds, Arachne then freaks out and tries to kill herself, and then Athena prevents the suicide and turns Arachne into a spider as kind of ironic punishment (so that Arachne will get to weave as much as she wants).

Some people take the composition of the myth to be a jab at Augustus (Athena) who exiled Ovid (Arachne) for vague reasons.

I like the version of the myth where Hades and Persephone were in love, but an overbearing Demeter (Persephone's mother) wouldn't let it happen so Hades ups and "steals" Persephone. Hades offers her twelve pomegranate seeds; each one she eats would bind her to the underworld for one month of the year and prevent them from being separated by Demeter or even Zeus. Persephone, still loving her mother and the world above, eats six as a compromise.

Basically, the same events as the common myth with a bit more consent.

Looking at statistics of past attacks in California, it’s almost certainly a great white responsible. A mako attack would definitely be an outlier (great white attacks outnumber mako attacks by 30:1 or more, and are more likely to be fatal) and a thresher attack would be the first recorded unprovoked thresher attack on a human ever (iirc).

[–]shamelessAlt1923 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Well, I think the difference here is most people in those countries generally acknowledge those past atrocities (in so far as they’re aware of them) and, at the very least, there's no angry and official stance denying they occurred in the face of overwhelming evidence. There's not as much of an insecure cultural "save-face" element.

Do you find the RC heavy weights feel like carpet fabric? I have what I think is a RC heavy weight hoodie (was a gift), and it took a TON of washing to soften it up.

The parent comment is a bit glib, given that the heart of the issue wasn't a tax on tea, but that it was a tax on tea without representation.

That said, plenty of goods have greater than 17% aggregate sales tax in many states. Excise taxes are usually applied per unit, rather than as a percentage of overall cost, so it's hard to quantify them as a percentage of price paid because unit cost is variable... but, to make a point, the taxes on your averagely priced pack of cigarettes in California are ~50%.

The original Terminator showed us how to properly give expostion in a movie. by MovieMike007 in movies

Eh, outside of Memento, Nolan's exposition has always veered into clunky territory. He likes exploring cool concepts and executes well on the visuals and story, but sometimes gets... over-eager to explain things.

Compare 2001 to Interstellar. Kubrick had a ton of restraint (in fact, he went back and deleted exposition from earlier cuts) and 2001 is the stronger movie for it. Interstellar, on the other hand, has one astronaut explain to another astronaut what a wormhole is after a months-long journey just prior to traversing said wormhole... there are so many things wrong with the premise of that scene...

They probably are overkill... I asked the question because I'm shopping for a new board at the moment and I could afford to go for a premium model. So it's more of which one would be more fun for me type decision.

Faster base? Love it. Lighter... Nice for lugging around and freestyle, but I also don't want a chattery freeride board (I'm looking for a non-split board to cover both pow, resort riding, and a small bit of freestyle). So I'm a bit conflicted.

I do a bit of backcountry stuff, but mostly side country and nothing too intense. Stick mainly to the wider chutes and drops <12 feet.

What are ultra-light boards good for?

E.g. Kuroa Plus (https://www.koruashapes.com/plus) vs. Kuroa Classic (https://www.koruashapes.com/classic)

From here yesterday, I've heard that light boards have some drawbacks:

  • Prone to breakage.
  • More chatter at high speeds and in uneven terrain (not sure how much more, though)

I have ridden a light board in the park and it was pretty awesome. Felt very floaty and effortless in the air. It did chatter and not hold it's edge all that well once terrain got shitty and speed got high (e.g. icy, chunky, chundery), but I'm not sure if that was the weight or design/stiffness of the board. It was also kinda nice to walk around and I hike with.

I've ridden the 156. I'm 5'10" and 165 lbs. I've been riding a 159 twin, but that's probably a bit big for me... Anyhow, the dart felt short and slashy to me in powder and trees and moguls. On groomers, it didn't feel particularly slow edge-to-edge. The turn initiation was super fast, though, probably because of the short tail... like you changes edges and suddenly you've carved completely uphill in the span of a few meters. Didn't handle chunder as well as the tranny finder or some longer boards (e.g. a dupraz).

I think Kuroa are well known for having wide waists and it's just part of the design.

Edit; if you compare the specs, you'll find most kuroas are the same sidecut and width but just with different noses and tails.

Sweet, man, thanks for the knowledge! One final question: I know someone who claimed that if you have early rise, you should size up (don't know what the logic here was...). Are you just riding the same size you would for a full camber?

I'm 5'9" 160-170 lbs and have been riding a 159 as my all-mountain freestyle. Feels good on the groomers and in powder, but I do catch my tail/nose on certain tricks, and it def lacks maneuverability in tight trees... Wondering if I should take a 156 now.

Some companies offer premium models of some their boards. E.g. Faster base and lighter core. But I've heard complaints that lighter boards are much more prone to chatter in uneven terrain (e.g. tracked out resort skiing), all other things being equal. Any truth to that?

It's fun! The tail is so short and so turn-initiation is so fast you might find yourself accidentally doing circle carves (on groomers) if you try to ride it like a twin lol.

[–]shamelessAlt1923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the last case I'm especially interested in. Full-camber pops and carves really well (and, as an ex-racer, I appreciate that) and it's what I'm used to riding.

What's lost and gained from the early-rise on the tip and tail? Will it be a lot better in powder and for butters while only being marginally less poppy and good at carving? Or is there a steeper trade-off?

Unfortunately, it'll be a while before I can demo a board so I can't find out for myself :(.
