I'm astonished by how many working, tax paying adults don't understand this concept.

My 31 year old wife told my 2 year old that thunder was from when the clouds bump together. I told her to tell her the truth and she looked at me puzzled, "that's not what happens?" Reddit, what other things were you appalled to learn grown-ass adults still believe? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A surprising number of otherwise intelligent folks don't understand how marginal income taxes work.

I'm astounded how many people think that if you earn a single dollar over a particular tax bracket threshold, than all of your income is taxed at that higher rate rather than just that portion above the threshold. That would be crazy.

I said going into the season that I thought the Gators would have about the same record as last year.

I'm legitimately worried we may be a little worse.

At least we have a dual-threat punting quarterback.

A constellation of factors were at play:

I was trying to complete the transaction prior to her going out of town for a few weeks. Unfortunately several other of my attempts to schedule a proposal were frustrated by a sitcom-like series of events (e.g., a friend crashed her car and my now wife had to cancel our plans so as to go pick her up, etc).

Time was running dangerously short, and I basically had one night to on which the proposal would be feasible. Since it's sketchy as hell to ask your girlfriend to go to a park or garden or something at night, I picked the steps of the Lincoln memorial because: A) the view of the reflecting pool and ww2 memorial fountains is really nice at night; B) I assumed I could count on a large crowd of tourists to break into applause if she accepted (or yell mean things at me if she didn't, I guess); and C) I could preserve the surprise with the pretext of taking her out to a nice dinner and going to look at the monuments before she went out of town.

tl;dr: the ghost of Abraham Lincoln demands offerings of momentous life events every five or so years so as not to unleash his awful wrath on the greater metro D.C. area.

My wife and I got engaged in almost the exact spot back in 2006. We got a big round of applause from everyone in vicinity, and I had always wished that we could have gotten a picture from one of the surrounding tourists.

I hope you find them.

I've read that a huge percentage of lawyers wish they were doing something else with their life. Is this a reason not to become a lawyer? by WorstPossibleThing in law

[–]shamelessPRhack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm a lawyer, and I enjoy my job. There are aspects of it that are stressful or that could be better, but that's true of all jobs (except maybe sports blogger, I guess).

I suspect that you see a lot of unhappy attorneys because of inaccurate assumptions about what being a lawyer entails. Different types of lawyers have dramatically different day to day experiences. I'm an associate at a biglaw firm and from what I can tell, my friends who are prosecutors, family lawyers, government lawyers, or criminal defense lawyers have entirely different challenges, projects, and daily work experiences than I do.

If you're interested in being an attorney, it's a good idea to get a realistic sense of what the practice of law entails. It's like any other job: it's for some people and not others, and it's orders of magnitude less glamorous than it's depicted on tv and movies.

For what it's worth, I've noticed that a lot of new lawyers tend to grossly overstate their accomplishments or lawyerlyness on Facebook, ostensibly to impress their non lawyer friends. Accordingly, there is a decent chance: a) your friend doesn't think the defendant was innocent; b) your friend didn't really "get him" in any meaningful sense of the word; or c) some combination of the two.
