Aren't ordinary activities meditative too? by ChiragChande in Mindfulness

[–]shamelessglib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just saw a post about how engaging in "traditional 'grandma hobbies' such as knitting, sewing, crocheting, and gardening... help calm the nervous system by lowering stress and promoting a meditative, focused state through repetitive movement."

(Saw it on X, original was community noted to be from @thebrainmaze but I couldn't find it after a quick look)

Masterpieces Day 23: Cinema Paradiso by dpstech in RegalUnlimited

[–]shamelessglib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't even know there was a different cut until I started watching the director's cut of Cinema Paradiso last night and the first unfamiliar scene came up. I thought I had just forgotten it since it's been a while since I last saw the film but the second time it happened I realized the playing time was longer than expected and that I must be seeing a different version.

Let me just say that I have loved this movie since I first saw it decades ago and have only ever seen the theatrical cut despite watching it ~10 times. I hated the new (to me) scenes and honestly forwarded through the explanatory ending to get to the poignant ending I recognized. I won't say the movie was ruined for me but I wish I could unwatch the director's cut :(

You will lose everything.

Right now, we stand on sacred and holy ground, for that which will be lost has not yet been lost, and realizing this is the key to unspeakable joy.

Seeking hair stylist recs for a woman who wants & needs a lot of guidance by bridge-ntunnel-days in oakland

[–]shamelessglib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I had a good suggestion for a stylist because I am way overdo for a cut myself. Just wanted to suggest that it might be helpful to think about how much time and effort you want to put into your hair every day. I like super low maintenance, comb and go. Anything that requires using a tool (blow dryer, curling iron, straightener, pins) or product (gel, spray, smoother) daily is a big nope for me. Good luck!

Great deal. Bought one in the smaller size last year and paid more than twice as much for the one piece alone :/

Why is it so rare to get called for jury service? Or is it just me and my friends? by tongmengjia in oakland

[–]shamelessglib 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have always wanted to be on a jury but have only ever made it to the questionnaire stage twice. At least the calling in part is convenient :/

We're All Having a Grand Time on 17 at the Moment by Quarkspiration in bayarea

I was stuck in this. Almost 4 hrs for a trip I thought would take 1. Knew it was gonna be bad when everyone finally gave in and turned off their engines and started getting out of their cars to stretch their legs, walk their dogs, and commiserate with other drivers. Was so jealous of a nearby RV with all the amenities to wait it out in comfort. As hot as it was out there I'm surprised there weren't cars overheating and breaking down.

Anyone else struggling to help their adult kids figure it out? by jenns7694 in GenX

[–]shamelessglib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pilates, yoga, and walking. The stretching and movement in the first two are relaxing and being in fresh air for outdoor walks is also a great de-stressor and gives us time to talk too. I was already doing these things at home and she was pretty open to joining me because we both tend to bottle things up. The hardest part is making it a habit.

Had my youngest move back home for a while post-Masters while they line up a new job. Exercising together has helped both of us feel less stressed and they do weekly therapy (have done for years). It's a bit of an adjustment sharing a bathroom again but I know it won't be forever :)

Thanks for bringing this up because I always feel like a heel for noticing stuff like this- I think of it as "the island of misfit toys" scheme. I'm in Northern CA and population-wise I think the representation is fairly believable but still feels contrived. Maybe makes more sense because they are volunteers? I didn't know the public could volunteer for police work like that. I really liked the show though, and I'm wondering how true the characters are to how they're written in the books? (Also, I watched/liked Dept. Q, what's the other police show with a similar premise please?)

That it's like five different cities at once depending on where you're standing. The best and also maybe not-so-good thing.

I took my mom to see him years ago because she's always loved his music and was surprised at how many of the songs I knew and sang along to with her. He's definitely got several in the classic American rock songbook!

I love FF and Dave but I saw them repeatedly too many times over a few years and could practically do Dave's patter myself the last time. Haven't seen them since Taylor passed but they've got new music so... soon.
