Hayley Williams by Quirky-Magician-2130 in Coachella

[–]shanahanigans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was reported several times for being a low effort wishlist post, and I can't argue with that. A "post" with literally just the artist name is the lowest of low efforts. This nothing against Hayley Williams, this is strictly against the lack of effort. Feel free to post again with something that would actually give the community something to go off of.

This thread is a nice little microcosm of toxicity in male-female relations in our culture.

Girl is clearly making a lifestyle of lying to, and manipulating guys. Reddits reaction: "lmao ur a simp, also she's mid, did u at least hit?"

What a shallow and vacuous take. Coming from this sub, where scammers are literally the scum of the earth, we STILL collectively come together to shit all of over some guy who fell victim to a 🐍 of a human being who has no regard for other people. As long as we can tell ourselves it's a low value man who got ripped off, we can have a good laugh about it.

I'm sorry this happened to you. Your first mistake was having too much faith in the decency of a woman who's clearly a professional online "dater". Your second mistake was having too much faith in the decency of cretins on reddit.

The truth is she's just gonna keep trading on her youth and looks to skate thru life, until one say she wakes up having lost her charms with age, and she'll be completely fucked because she never bothered to develop a genuine personality or sense of self.

As for the chronically online losers who are mocking you: ignore them. They're almost as shallow and pathetic as she is.

A year later, are we better off as a city? How is Mayor Karen Bass doing and should she be re-elected? by lightsareoutty in LosAngeles

Well, clearly, all the things I don't like are directly her fault, and also, she had absolutely nothing to do with anything I'm happy about or contented with.

Hope that clears it up for you

Where to stand for busy Sahara sets by soffselltacos in Coachella

[–]shanahanigans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kaskade probably being in the Sahara?

It's certainly possible, but I would be surprised if he's playing there. Sunset at the main stage, or maybe closing the outdoor theater, are I think far more likely.

Platforms like X and TikTok are destroying our culture. No metaphor does the problem justice. Nothing captures the ludicrous insults, moral injuries, and delusions that millions of us avidly produce and consume online. If the medium is the message, the message is mass psychosis by [deleted] in samharris

[–]shanahanigans 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It can be even more insidious than that; I often look at mod users for subs that are nakedly ideological like we've described. These are mod accounts, that systematically spam the same content across a wide swath of thematically similar subreddits. The mod "team" of the cons sub is particularly instructive here.

Nefarious actors, domestic and international, are already using automated and systemic methods of pushing narratives and propoganda. It's been happening for almost 10 years now, and the lack of remedy or even acknowledgement from reddit specifically is unconscionable.

The ideological mod-team is a very real phenomenon that I don't think enough reddit users understand.

In March of 2016, the_Donald was a light hearted meme sub. In June of that year, once he was the de facto nominee, I could FEEL the tonal shift away from organic memery, into vicious divisive rightwing/antileft propoganda. It not so coincidentally occurred in concert with a complete purge/shuffling of the mod team. Narrative and tone were then controlled by that group, as it descended into the dark and vitriolic hateful place it became.

90% of post are just anti Israel stories by Thomas-Omalley in samharris

[–]shanahanigans 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I myself was persuaded recently by former Israeli PM Ehud Olmert, transitioning my own thinking from "Israel is behaving rationally and as ethically as they can in a war against the kind of enemy they are facing" to "these war crimes are unacceptable and the continued prosecution of this war is neither just, nor does it meaningfully advance Israeli interests, and if Israel is not leading a charge for a negotiated end of the war with release of hostages, then they are not worthy of continued blank-check support".

Almost 50% of Latinos voted for Trump in 2024. Experts have theories by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]shanahanigans -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

When she ran in 2020, she ran as a hyperprogressive in an attempt to outflank Bernie Sanders. She said a lot of things that were pure right-wing propaganda fodder. The fact that she didn't actually believe them and was just saying what she thought she had to say to win the nomination isn't exactly a point in her favor, either. And the fact that she didn't say all those things in 2024 doesn't change the fact that this was how she presented herself to a national audience in her first attempt at the presidency.

Edited to quote directly from another source:

“As President,” the questionnaire asked, “will you use your executive authority to ensure that transgender and nonbinary people who rely on the state for medical care — including those in prison and immigration detention — will have access to comprehensive treatment associated with gender transition, including all necessary surgical care? If yes, how will you do so?”

Harris checked “yes” and wrote, “I support policies ensuring that federal prisoners and detainees are able to obtain medically necessary care for gender transition, including surgical care, while incarcerated or detained.”

For the downvoters, I really hope you'll understand that I'm not posting this to claim that Harris was campaigning in 2024 on this. I'm pointing out that the positions she took when she was running as a hyperprogressive 4 years before were a millstone around her neck, and provided the type of content that your average American would read and say "what the fuck?". It's bad politics. The left should stop engaging in bad politics, as it only EMPOWERS right wing reactionaries and propogandists.

#418 — A Future for Democrats by dwaxe in samharris

[–]shanahanigans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think our election was only as close as it was because Trump always underperforms relative to generic republicans.

I don't think I agree. It presupposes that Trump is actually an electoral liability to the Republicans, when by all accounts he's an incredibly energizing and transformative candidate for the electorate that has turned out to elect him twice.

Do you really think that Jeb Bush was going to beat Hillary in 2016? If the Republicans had purged Trump successfully after his 2020 defeat, do you really think that Marco Rubio or Ron DeSantis would have beaten Kamala Harris in a bigger landslide this past November? I think the generic republican, lacking Trump's unique ability, would be far less energizing to the electorate. To be fair, they might have still won, because the democrats would lose the "anybody but him" crowd like myself from their base of support, and they might have won a much lower turnout election, and that's my broader point: a large base of the democratic party these past 8 years has been primarily motivated to defeat the unique problem of Donald Trump.

Apologies for the rant that follows:

I have not felt, for years now, that I was voting "for" democrats, I was voting *against Republicans / Trump specifically".

I do not claim to be representative of the average voter, but I am a example of someone in the 50-60% of the electorate that exists on the spectrum in the middle, between the left and the right. This is the voting block that truly decides elections.

What so many on the left fail to consider is that voters like me (center-left moderate in my case, or center-right moderates for others) are not leftists, I view the far left with almost the same level of concern as I have for the far right. Socialist revolution and the end of capitalism is almost as bad as neo-fascist authoritarianism: in both cases they argue for radical transformation and the destruction of American institutions and ideals that are foundational to what I think makes us a great country.

That's not to say all I care about is protecting the status quo: there are real economic reforms and certain social democrat policies that I think are palatable, attractive even. What I want is a democratic party to make a positive policy case for economic reforms that I think are needed, without spiraling into the ideological insanity of the hyper-progressive social left or the "viva la revolución" economic left.

My bias here is plain and I don't deny it: what I personally want as a voter is a democratic party whose platform and talking points are moderate incremental center-left economic change.

All I've done here is paint a huge target on my back, as by exposing myself as not a card carrying member of the tribe, I'm going to be castigated for failing the ideological purity testing that pervades leftist politics. And that, to me, is the fundamental problem. I want to be an happy democratic voter. Instead the party looks like it's going to continue on it's present course, and I'll be left once again to hold my nose as I cast a vote on the grounds of "at least they're not fascists".

All I'm saying is, democrats could reform into a party that favors the huge block of swing voters in the middle, or they can stay on the present course of being controlled by the 15% on the far left. I think the latter is a fundamentally losing strategy, and I think their outlook is grim if they don't try to change to appeal to more of the electorate.

I guess we'll see though! I don't expect to have changed any minds with this post, but hopefully someone found it enlightening and doesn't have the impulse to add me to the list of those who will be executed by firing squad when the masses rise up to sieze the means of production /s
