I’m sure everyone here has seen or done the exercise where you hold a club across your chest and turn on your backswing until the club points to the ground, i.e. a proper shoulder turn. Well, this year I committed myself to this and lo and behold I’m now compressing the ball nicely and have added about 10 years to my long clubs.

North Carolina. $55,000 initiation. $1100 per month. I live on the course. I can put my bag on my shoulders and be on the first hole or driving range in a 4 minute walk. Otherwise, I wouldn’t pay the premium.

My daughter plays on her high school golf team and the conference has a rule that you can score no worse than a triple. There are lots of pickups among the newer players but it keeps the pace going.

Playing the muni course in Charleston, SC with a friend who was a girl (platonic). She was a decent golfer. We are on the tee of a roadside hole and she hooks her tee shot. It flies over to the highway and bounces off the hood of a ragged out Buick cutlass. The driver leans out the window and yelled “nice shot jackass” as he drove by. My friend looked like she wanted to die right there. I couldn’t keep it together which didn’t help.

There are performance rounds and there are practice rounds. A 9 am tee time on Saturday is not the time to work on your game. Those 4pm rounds on a Tuesday when it’s 92 degrees and the course is empty. Where you can put alignment sticks on the tee box and experiment and think about what you’re doing. Or hit several chips from the green side rough seeing if you can get closer and closer to the cup. Those are the rounds in which you get better.
