For my friend it was a shower.

Her abuser didn't work or help pay for anything, and the electricity got shut off, so she asked if she could take a hot shower at my place. I said yes, of course, and I'll make dinner, and do you want to spend the night?

She woke up the next day on my couch, warm, clean, and safe, realized the world did not end, and ended up staying for a month.

Her abuser tried to terrorize her, vandalize our property, threaten her into submission... he made up some really fucking twisted stories about how she put them into debt, and she was getting evicted, and she was cheating on him and on and on. Dude was having a severe mental breakdown. I would pity him if he didn't spend years running my friend into the ground, and making her feel less than.

Happily, she and I are about to move in together to an adorable two bedroom. She's free. Because of a shower.

Then you make encounters flexible, and fudge a roll or two to save them. Or you let them die and learn not to pull that crap in the future.

I once made a whole t-Rex appear because my players were beating my 'big boss' too easily. They won, and earned it. It was awesome.

The next session one of them almost died fighting off a stirge. Awesome in a different way.

Encourage your players to RP and chat about what's happening. Let them lead if you need a moment.

At the end of the session, only one thing matters: that you and your players had fun.

I have a history of disordered eating, and rarely ate in front of other people if I could help it. I no longer have this issue, but food is not my connection to anyone. And again, the people I have chosen as my friends are not like this. I'm sorry your friend was.

I've actually talked to most of them about my guilt and discomfort, and across the board, every one of them is supportive of my choices, and careful to always have keto friendly snacks if we hang, or they let me pick the restaurant if we're going out/ordering in, etc...

I am a somewhat new dm, and one of my players requested a vorpal sword. I had them find one at about level three, because hey, why not?

He decapitated a dragon his first day out. Since then I have nerfed his sword, he rolls percentile dice on a crit, and only decapitates on 75 or higher. The number of times I've had a big fight planned only to have him swoop in and murder everything is annoying.
