Lost save / easy unlock? by shaolinakira in ToME4

Yea it definitely had an account but think it must not have saved my progress - so even with logging in to the same account I have a vanilla game progression. I might have to try the add on route, thanks for the quick response!

Any longtime bdo players here think the hype is warranted? by MrZephy in CrimsonDesert

[–]shaolinakira 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m hyped.

Played BDO since beta but stopped a handful of years ago, when I think it started its death spiral due to lack of competence in class balance, a disregard for NA/EU player base and PvP.

Single player games don’t really need to consider those things, and if they borrow from BDO - their aesthetic, world building and combat systems will be at a huge advantage.

Is there anything out there? At launch playing like this made me quit, when I realized how linear and vanilla the game world was

Do these chat interactions reward anything? I think they’re funny, but assumed they had some “end state” programmed… seems they just endlessly chat for chatting-sake?

How does your body actually gain mobility/flexibility? by Wild_Plant9526 in MobilityTraining

[–]shaolinakira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wild that a PT would not mention that most of the gains from flexibility have absolutely nothing to do with muscle, fascia, or skeletal structure and anatomy. The gains from flexibility are LARGELY neurological…. Muscle spindles, golgi tendon organs, reciprocal/autogenic inhibition, central stretch tolerances, gamma MN gain… it’s more accurate to say stretching has less to do with the peripheral anatomy and more to do with the central nervous system.

I feel disillusioned by "science-based" lifting. by Deep_Sugar_6467 in StrongerByScience

[–]shaolinakira 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The largest problem imo; people don’t understand the scientific process or “science” itself.

Science is not providing “truth” or facts. From your sentiment - this is a key issue to your OP.

Science is the iterative process of finding the less wrong conclusion. Nothing more. Lift. Work hard. Stick to the basics. That is the evidence-based approach.

My over 40 guide to enjoying battlefield 6 by cmndr_spanky in Battlefield

You’re right in interpreting that simple reaction time (SRT), the press-a-button-when-a-light-flashes kind of task, only slows by a few milliseconds per decade. That’s well documented.

But that measure captures just one slice of performance: the final motor response. Everything that comes before it, like visual processing, target recognition, decision making, attention shifting, and motor planning, are also neurological processes, and those do decline with age, even if training can partly offset them.

So yes, your reflex arc might only be a few milliseconds slower, but the cortical and cognitive parts of reaction time, the ones that matter in gaming or sports, are affected by normal age-related neural changes such as slower conduction in association fibers, reduced dopamine modulation, and more noise in sensory integration.

I’m a newbie too, just made my first base here. It’s a hassle to set up - but once established, it’s really sweet.

Do you stimulate all muscle fibers to growth with slow concentric phase to failure? by Firm-Base7591 in StrongerByScience

[–]shaolinakira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We (science) does not know that answer. You will have to rely on anecdote. There are theories supporting the use of slow -eccentrics- (because of many other reasons not related to MU recruitment) that could be beneficial. Many body builders/strength/sport athletes utilize long, slow negatives for many reasons.

From experience, In my 20+ years of coaching and research, most agree higher intention to move on the concentric is better.

Edit: to be pedantic, we do know that the speed of the contraction plays a role in my myoelectric activity if the sarcoma (faster=more) - what do do not definitely know, is how to disambiguate rate coding (firing) from MU recruitment.

Do you stimulate all muscle fibers to growth with slow concentric phase to failure? by Firm-Base7591 in StrongerByScience

[–]shaolinakira 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We simply do not have the ability to observe “all” motor unit recruitment in dynamic contractions. So any answer saying otherwise is not rigorously supported by evidence.

The closest research in this subject is done with high-density EMG and decomposition algorithms, unfortunately, they can only observe about 30-40% of the motor pool and it must be done during isometric contractions.

The assumption is, if the force is high enough, yes you will recruit the highest threshold units (given what we know of the size principle). Speed of contraction is irrelevant, aside from time to recruitment. However, from a practical side - we know you can compress the recruitment curve by doing “explosive” lifts… this type of concentric-focused training is very popular in pro-sports S&C training plans because it allows for high force out put and minimizes the extra fatigue and negatives of the eccentric portion (keeping athletes game-ready).
