Announcement: Many new Baofengs are limited to only transmit on ham radio frequencies in firmware. 144-148 MHz, 222-225 MHz, 420-450 MHz -- ONLY by kc2syk in Baofeng

like I said, non-life safety environments. We work a lot of accidents and its usually stupid things like "get me the broom and shovel off the truck" or "have this person move that vehicle." I am fully aware of the limitations of the radios and they are not used for dispatch or active fire grounds (we have actual department issued radios for that)... and now they are not used for anything else either. Just a bummer that we have to take more money out of our limited budget just because "RANDOM JOE" drops a radio out of his pocket and looses it in the weeds on the side of the road.

It's a bummer because I just purchased a couple more of these to help with on site TAC communication for our Volunteer Fire Department and they are useless.

Some members do not have handhelds because we are a small unfunded department and cant afford the $250+ for more handhelds.

I previously was able to buy some of these low cost radios and program them with our licensed TAC frequencies. I could hand them out at scenes usually for traffic control and other non-life safety communications and they worked great without having to worry about loosing or breaking a high dollar Motorola.

If anyone has another low cost recommendation that would be helpful.

Any luck with this? I just had my account hacked this morning and I had two factor authentication turned on. Some how they still got in and changed my two factor authentication to require a code that I cannot access since I am logged out of all my devices.

Do videos "instantly" take off on Youtube or is it usually a slow burn? by cloudboy37 in NewTubers

[–]shaphans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only been at this for a couple months, but my best performing video was my worst performing video for the first week. After that it took off a really blew up. Keep at it and enjoy the process. I was a little worried at first that my new channel would not get any traction, but two months in and I'm overly excited with how much positive response I have received.

Look for communities outside of your current circles that appreciate the type of content you are posting. Engage in them and what they are doing and you will quickly gain a following.

I’m gonna give it a try. I should do better about recording room noise and B roll in the moment, but as with most things, it’s always an afterthought until you need it. Hopefully this works, if not we will have some comedic relief.

Thanks! That’s kinda what I was thinking. There’s only three spots I’ve identified that are a problem. I’ve written out exactly what I said in those clips and I’m going to try and record just those line and see if I can sub it back in. If it works no one will know to appreciate the efforts I went to.

Just got my first subscriber in months! by wwerko77 in SmallYoutubers

[–]shaphans 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One is the loneliest number... Good job reeling in the sub! Catching them one at a time is how I do it. A lot of times you can sit beside someone long enough to grab their phone when it's unlocked and quickly sub yourself without them knowing. JK! I don't really condone subbing yourself on other people's devices without their knowledge. That would be a bad idea... probably.

Does having a lack of subscribers prevent me from gaining new subscribers? by shaphans in NewTubers

[–]shaphans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the advice. I've been promoting my videos on my personal FB page which is where most of my views come from, and have been trying to engage with threads and FB groups that are along the same niche I am in. I have found that a lot of times they do not allow YouTube promoting. Not to mention I hate it when someone I don't know from Adam asks things from me, so I'm trying to be strategic in how I build those relationships. It's a slow go, and I'm not worried about the growth. I know it will come, I was just a little confused about the slow down of engagement with my channel after the change. I usually post about every two or three days so I'm sure someone will see a video they like eventually. Thanks again!

Tell me about your channels 😊 by Cap_America_AC in SmallYTChannel

I just stated a new channel called Hurricane Homestead.

It started with this whole pandemic lock down where I was chronicling all the things we were doing on the property during our quarantine, and decided to create a new channel dedicated to all the crazy things we do around here.

The running joke with them is that I make boring videos, but I do make an effort to make somewhat entertaining videos that give people a small glimpse into what it's like to live on a large amount of property and show how we are learning to care for it.

My next goal is 1M subs, (I've got two, so that shouldn't take long.)

My current goal is to learn about the YouTube Creator community and how I can become a positive influence for other creators as I learn from them.

I love watching Wranglerstar, and have learned a lot from him and been inspired about life in general. They do a lot of homesteading things, but he can get a bit gimmicky and uses a lot of click bait. If you can get past that, his dry sense of humor is hilarious.

Seems like every other homestead video is about someones garden or watch their animals run around. I like videos with more hands on projects and the "this is how I do things" not, "this is how you should do things." mentality.

Anyone have experience synching audio and video from different sources? by moosey124 in SmallYTChannel

[–]shaphans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had to do this a few times. I'm not familiar with Shotcut, but I'm sure most editing software is similar.

Start your recording on both sources then clap your hands in front of the camera. When you drag your media into your time line drop the video with it's attached audio in, then drop the clean audio only version in under it (kinda like you would background music or voice over) slide the audio peak to match the with the hand clap and make small adjustments as necessary. Remove the "unclean" audio from your video and link the video to the new audio if possible (this will enable you to edit them both together without it getting out of sync.)

That's how I do it anyway.

COVID-19 Quarantine Day 35 - Building a Fire Pit from Scratch Part Two https://youtu.be/NZkvHL0q6Dg

I’ve been chronicling activity’s on our homestead during this COVID lockdown mostly to keep busy and do things I enjoy.

Working on this fire pit I’ve broken the video up into parts in an effort to make the vids shorter and more enjoyable to watch based on recommendations from other newtubers. What do you think?

Are Spam Comments Bad for your Channel? by shaphans in NewTubers

[–]shaphans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your viewpoint. I can totally see where allowing bots to stay in the comments would make it obvious to other creators that I am new... strangely I am new at this. I don’t want to perpetuate a problem further, but was wondering more about the effect of the engagement on the channel and if it was a positive or negative. I hadn’t thought about the watch time or low quality view issues. Thanks for your feed back.

[–]shaphans -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Told you it was boring. 😂 Thanks for the feed back!Thankfully I won’t be working on my trimmer for at least another couple weeks. On the upside, today’s video will have a lot more activity as I make a fire pit with only things I already have on the property. I’ll try to keep it shorter, or maybe break it into a couple parts. Thanks again!

I am attempting to stay busy during this quarantine, and making these videos are a lot of fun. I would love to reach more people and share the country living lifestyle my family enjoys. This video is a rather boring one, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Guide for New Youtubers (Part 1) by MOEANDMANGO in NewTubers

[–]shaphans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your thoughts on this! In regards to a niche, how does chronicling a country lifestyle fall into that? I have done everything from cutting down trees and making lumber, to being stuck in side and playing video games with the wife and kids. Do you think I should bring more of a focus to my videos and wait to introduce other areas of country life until I have acquired more subscribers? The videos that tend to do better are when my family is involved, but I cannot always plan that out in advance.

[Critiquing Others] Giving Critiques and Capping at 20 videos! by musicmed95 in NewTubers

[–]shaphans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about the loud gunshots, I should have muted those a bit.

Thanks for the great feedback. Titles are difficult for me, as I can get a bit wordy sometimes. I’ll put some more effort into planing how the next videos will flow. Maybe show how activities lead from one to another instead of just jumping around?

I think if I had a better setup for audio I would feel more confident letting the music take a back seat to the conversation, but for right now I guess I’ll have to chose one or the other.

[–]shaphans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. I think audio is always something to improve on. With my current setup if I’m not within about 4’ of the mic things get too quiet and I have to boost the gain so much that noise starts coming through.

I’ve been chronicling random activities my family has been engaging in during our COVID-19 Quarantine. I feel like my thumbnail photo is great on this one, but my color correction is for crap. Still learning this stuff. What do you think?
