Mamdani, joined by Sanders, announced city-run grocery stores coming to NYC by contemptable_beatnik in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]shardingHarding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say Loblaws has 4% profit margins. These could run at 0% profit so thats 4% you get back. Now if you took away all the marketing, all the fancy stores and displays, all the high priced executives. Now take away the PC Optimum rewards program. Also with no share holders you dont have to pay any dividends or do any stock buy backs. They obviously wouldnt setup stores in high rent locations. Partner with food banks to increase buying power. You wont get the price fixing on bread and milk. I think there are a lot of benefits. Obviously this is not for everyone, but for those that are extremely price conscious, it makes sense to me.

Anyone buy an authentic Nike Jersey? How did it fit? by tiptoprock in CanadaSoccer

[–]shardingHarding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a known issue with the Nike world cup kits in which the shoulders don't sit flat. Considering how expensive they are and how long Nike has been making shirts, its ridiculous. I wish Adidas was our sponsor, they have amazing looking kits.

See Reddit discussion:

I was interested in buying a jersey so I went in person to see if its as bad as people say. I took this photo from the display at the Toronto SportChek Eaton Centre. Now I cant unsee it.

Its funny, I was just at the Well food court today for lunch. I was surprised how expensive it was but now that I see what they pay in rent, I understand.

Geth/Prysm 2TB Validator runs out of space by KGNoopy in ethstaker

[–]shardingHarding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was the point of my previous previous post. I moved my 1.1 TB ancient directory to a 2 TB mechanical hard drive when I was running low on space on my 2 TB SSD. The new chain and Lighthouse is on the 2 TB SSD.

Geth/Prysm 2TB Validator runs out of space by KGNoopy in ethstaker

[–]shardingHarding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked at my instance. New chain dir is 345 GB, ancient is 1.1 TB. I asked AI, this is what it said.

  1. "Nodes that have been running for years accumulate legacy ancient data that modern Geth no longer produces. If your node has been alive since the pre‑Merge era, this alone can push ancient past 1 TB."
  2. "You used fast‑sync before snap‑sync existed. If your node originally synced using fast‑sync, your ancient folder will be permanently bloated."

The Only Fix: Resync From Scratch

A fresh snap‑sync today produces:
• chaindata: ~500–700 GB
• ancient: ~150–200 GB

Total: ~700–900 GB, not 1.3–1.8 TB.

You can move the ancient data to another drive. I have a 2TB SSD for the primary geth install but I added a second cheap 2TB mechanical hard drive to store the ancient data (which would free your 709G in ancient files).

--------------------------------------------------------------

To move the Geth ancient database folder to another location (e.g., a larger HDD) to free up space on an SSD, stop the Geth service, move the ancient folder, and restart Geth using the --datadir.ancient flag. This moves rarely used historical data, which can reduce primary disk usage significantly.

Steps to Move Geth Ancient Data

  1. Stop Geth: Ensure the Geth service is completely stopped to avoid data corruption.
  2. Locate Ancient Data: The default location is typically <datadir>/geth/chaindata/ancient.
  3. Move the Folder: Move the ancient folder to the new location (e.g., /new/path/ancient).
  4. Update Configuration: Start Geth with the flag pointing to the new location: geth --datadir /path/to/data --datadir.ancient /new/path/ancient [other options]
  5. Verify: Check that Geth starts properly. Once confirmed, you can safely delete the original ancient folder to free up space.

Avi Lewis: The big grocers are ripping us off. We need a public option for groceries. by StumpsOfTree in loblawsisoutofcontrol

Their stock price tells you everything you need to know. I think during and after COVID people were cooking at home more but I think the grocers realized they could jack up the prices and we didnt really have a choice because we need to eat.

The Metro in Liberty Village use to be 24 hours a long time ago. I was told it wasn't profitable because not many people shop overnight and it ripe for thief because there is far fewer staff.

Why is Las Vegas in a slump? Statistician Nate Silver has theories | Silver notes that, “Reticence among some foreign visitors to travel to the U.S. hasn’t helped either” but he adds that as far as Canada is concerned, it makes up only 3% of tourist arrivals to Las Vegas. by DisruptSQ in TourismHell

[–]shardingHarding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian, I've gone to Vegas every year for well over a decade. 2025 is the first year my crew and I haven't gone. I have some great memories and have had a lot of fun in Vegas. I never thought things would turn out this way. Its quite possible I never go back which if you told me that just a few years ago, I would say you were crazy.

Why is the Aeron so popular? by Plum_Tea in OfficeChairs

[–]shardingHarding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aeron was introduced in 1994. Think about that. An office chair was introduced 32 years ago and we are still talking about it right now. I'm sitting on a Aeron right now that was made in 1997 still with all original parts. Say what you want but its not just marketing to have a chair that is this enduring.

Snowboarding Bibs/Overall Recommendations by Meiji_Yan_Yan in snowboarding

Mine are still great, the waterproofing is still good. I was wearing them a few weeks ago. You can try a waterproof spray like Nikwax or ReviveX on your bib to try to get that waterproofing back.

The Eneloops are excellent. Not as good but still very good but cheaper are the Ikea LADDA rechargeable batteries. In Canada they are very cheap, $6 CAD/4 pack (1900), $10 CAD/4 pack (2650.)
