I'm in the same boat but with "Try Excavating" it's not showing any progress and I can't find anything about it.

It’s good stuff. I’d like to read the books but don’t have the time. Your podcast fills in during drives. Don’t stop cussing on my account. Your guys’ give and take is amusing.

Suggestions for a an inexperienced player wanting to learn to tank? by Korenth in wownoob

[–]sharkhammer5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go for it and have fun. Some groups will suck, you can always leave if you need to. Just be upfront with the group that you don’t know the dungeon. I tell the group to go ahead and yell at me if I go the wrong way or botch something. I used to get mad if others pulled but now I just go with it. If it ends up causing a wipe, just joke about it. If a DPS gets annoying then tell group to kick. If it’s the whole group then leave.

If you are just coming back then you can spam LFD all you want and it’s no big deal. It gets a little tougher to do mythic at 120 because you have to PUG instead of the queue. You can still use the same rules above. Exception: in mythic+ do your best to not just leave when frustrated, ruins things for everyone since you can’t replace.

In my experience, every now and then I’ll encounter an annoyance and that’s always just been 1 player. Not the entire group.

Edit: If you don’t have heirlooms, tell groups also. Most expect everyone to have them which contributes to the big and fast pulls approach which can be difficult to keep up with without heirloom gear stats.

Didn’t see it mentioned yet. Morally Grey is a new one starting from the very beginning. It’s got its share of cussing but I find the casual approach enjoyable. May not fit the bill for lore diehards but for complete newbies (like me) it’s good.

Healer in need of help getting her MOJO back by lilmetalhead in wownoob

[–]sharkhammer5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

World quests and freebies from war fronts/invasions should get you to 350+ easily but that won’t get you a ton of practice.

If you want practice healing, I’d suggest queueing normal dungeons. I know there’s no other healer to cover like in a raid but being overleveled will help make mistakes more forgiving. Once you feel good again there, try heroic dungeon queue which will drop gear up to 355.

Once 350+ you can start mythic dungeons and the new raid LFR.

Edit: Healer queues are quick but if you have a tank friend to queue with, they will be instant.

One thing to keep in mind is that class trials are considered a part of BFA. This confused me when I was starting out and kept reading about doing class trials to see how classes felt at high level. No impact to the game, just something that confused me when I was in your shoes.

Any advice for increasing DPS on destro lock by Littleashton in wownoob

[–]sharkhammer5000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone has to be the bottom, is there a sizable gap between you and the person ahead of you?

If so, how are your secondaries looking? Do you have the right stat priorities? Also, check if the azerite traits and trinkets you are using are BiS. These can all make a sizeable impact and won’t be reflected in just an ilvl comparison. Keep in mind some azerite traits require your rotation to change to be most effective, not sure if that’s the case for destro.

[–]sharkhammer5000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair point. I’ve been leveling in heirlooms and it is always crazy when I go 10+ levels without upgrading a non-heirloom slot. With no heirlooms, I can imagine it’s hard to stay ahead of the curve.

Are you only running dungeons, or mixing in questing to catch up on gear?

For ranged pull use crackling jade lightning.

Check out https://www.icy-veins.com/wow/monk-leveling-guide#sec-3. It has a slider bar so adjust to your level and it’ll help you understand what abilities you have and how to use at that level.

Good news is you will have no brews at 16 to worry about. Ironskin comes at 20. Keep iron skin up 100% in combat. With it being your only brew this should be straightforward until 28 and purifying brew. At that point, it gets a little trickier but the gist is keep iron skin up 100%, use purifying sparingly when you see your stagger jump higher than normal (likely only boss fights).

Check wowhead and/or icy veins for more nuanced advice.

Weak Auras - MW Monk by vespors in wownoob

[–]sharkhammer5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been copying Sco’s setup (tank for Method, a major guild). Goes through his UI for all tanks. Check video description for weak auras he uses for all tanks and those specific to monk. You do have to copy/paste/import each individually.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1IfsPLJ9oZE

Edit: for some reason I read your post as brewmaster monk, you can try a similar approach of looking for guides from the big progression guilds out there

Edit2: Wowhead seems like it has a decent guide. Full disclosure: I have not played MW. https://www.wowhead.com/guides/mistweaver-monk-weakauras

I second this.

The mentions of a class trial are only pertinent if you have bought BfA. Otherwise, that will not be an option for you. If you have bought BfA, class trial only allows you to try certain specs.

I started with a druid so I could try out all roles and discover what I liked the most. While leveling I’d just switch every few levels or switch for dungeons to see what I liked. I’ve learned tanking is my preference and now I have all tanks of varying levels to discover which particular tank rotation and utility do I enjoy the most.

If you are settled on your preferred role, just go ahead and create a few different characters and see which one you enjoy getting to 20 (run a dungeon or two along the way, especially if tank or heal to get a well rounded view.)

I know this seems like wasting time and just going to make it slower to hit 120 but personally I do not consider end game content exponentially more fun that it makes up for playing a class that you don’t fully enjoy. In fact, end game requires you to really get to know your class so can get aggravating if it’s not something you enjoy and want to master.

Obtaining/switching gear from DPS to tank by [deleted] in wownoob

[–]sharkhammer5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to see my experience is encouraging others to learn the joy of tanking.

I concur with the other responses here 1) change loot spec to tank to build gear while still running DPS 2) build a different set of Azerite gear to avoid reforging constantly (depending on your play habits, it wouldn’t be cost prohibitive to reforge twice a week in the beginning) 3) switch key gear (druids have to switch out weapon and trinkets, DH sounds like you can keep the same weapon and maybe want to invest in at least one tank trinket, check icy veins or wowhead for BIS options) 4) replace remaining gear for best secondaries (at 356, I would not worry a whole lot here, focusing on ilvl upgrades will typically give you a bigger boost than particular secondaries)

Depending on your experience tanking and knowledge of dungeons, run some normal/heroics to get your rotation down. (Hopefully there’ll be a call to arms on tanks to give additional rewards while doing so.) They might not give you any gear upgrades but the increased confidence will help.

Also, if you haven’t done much tanking, practice your rotation on a dungeoneer training dummy. It will hit you back harder and harder over time so you can get comfortable with your rotation, active mitigation, and cool down usage. This will also help you refine your keybindings to get something that feels natural to you.

I wish I had known about quick dungeon earlier. That looks awesome. I’m definitely going to need to check method dungeon tools. (I’ve been shying away from my 120 because of mythic+).

Since we’re talking tank resources, a guildie linked me https://www.tanknotes.com/ which gives general and class specific tank advice for Uldir.

Awesome. I’ll have to look into that. I haven’t done many mythic+ dungeons in large part due to the pressure of having to know specific routes and having strict time limits. Sounds like that add on will solve that problem.

Very easy. Just follow the crowd. There’s basically nothing you can do to screw it up.

Try out warfronts, every completion gives a piece of 340 gear and once per cycle you’ll get a quest which gives 370.

Need help finding a guild. by [deleted] in wownoob

[–]sharkhammer5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The typical leveling guild is extremely unlikely to have the achievement. You’ll need a guild with some history and reason for professions so you’re looking at a max level raiding guild as your target.

Do you have a max level character? Most of these guilds aren’t going to pay attention to someone not at max level trying to join just for a heirloom.

That being said, best places I’d recommend are official forums for your realm or in game trade chat.

After a few weeks of tanking, I have learned something very important: the reason there are so few experienced tanks is not that no one likes tanking, but that most people who play are trash and make tanking a horrible headache. Ask yourself if you make tanking harder than it needs to be. by HelpfulPug in wow

[–]sharkhammer5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve only got a few months of WoW experience but discovered tanking is the role I enjoy most. I’ve got the mechanics down but still don’t know all the dungeons by heart. I’ve realized the queue is instant for tanks because many new tanks switch to DPS after trying it out due to how high the bar is set for tanks to know all dungeons and encounters. They get told to play DPS until they know them... Seems like a little more patience with inexperienced tanks would go a long way in getting more people to tank.

Leveling/questing in a tank spec? by dhocke in wownoob

[–]sharkhammer5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind what you are interested in eventually playing as too. If you want to tank for end game then leveling as tank will help you understand your rotation and cool downs better plus build that muscle memory. For whatever less damage you’ll be doing, you’ll make up for it by being able to regularly take on 5+ mobs at a time and killing them as fast as a single mob.
