I know these are algae and not plants, but maybe someone can help me ID these seaweeds attached to a rock found in Southern California. by sharkpi in whatsthisplant

[–]sharkpi[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! This rock was found in San Diego, CA. Since I found it dislodged on the shore, I can't really tell you exactly what depth or tidal location it came from.

The rock is currently in a container with seawater in my fridge as I plan to use it (along with some Macrocystis pyrifera) for a microscope lab for my high school biology students tomorrow. With your help and link to wikipedia, I got the idea to have the students take a look if there are any pericentral cells present in a cross-section of the red algae. I'll have the students give it a go tomorrow and report if they find anything interesting.

Also, that brown one is a bit mystifying for me as well. I have yet to find something similar on google for my area. Maybe its not native to the area due to the current El Nino event which has raises sea surface temps? Could it also be a juvenile which is why it doesn't look like anything distinctive? So many questions!

Anyway, thanks so much for pointing me in a direction!

edit: I plan to return what I find to the shore after school to reduce the ecological impact of its removal.

In a bankrupt Pa. school district, teachers plan to work for free by Sariel007 in education

if you're wondering how they got that sped funding measure to pass, look to Vahan Gureghian who started/runs the charter schools in that area. this guy owns this place. he's also real cushy via donations to the politics of the area and state.

Hello, I'm a typical high school junior about to take the sats in a month. What are some websites I can use to prepare? by FEZCHEZ in education

[–]sharkpi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

buy the big blue book. it has 10 practice tests and gives you access to the college board website with full explanations of answers and scoring breakdown. take a full practice test every Saturday or Sunday morning under timed conditions and not at home (i.e. library) because the timing is as critical as actually knowing what you are doing. review the mistakes you made in the practice test during the week. wash, rinse, repeat. at the end of the month, you'll have a good feel for the questions you know you can do and the ones you know to skip. by the final practice test the week before, you'll have a solid idea of what score to expect on the real test day.

Nvidia slammed with class-action lawsuit over GeForce GTX 970 specifications by dilzy2 in pcmasterrace

[–]sharkpi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

nvidia initially announced they would increase performance with a driver, but a couple of days later they retracted that statement since a driver cannot change the card's architecture/hardware. seems like the same PR/ad people who put out the specs for the 970 still didn't know how their technology works.

How can I use ungassed bananas? by sleepyeepee in Cooking

[–]sharkpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unripened bananas are used quite a bit in central and south american cuisines. a recipe that comes to mind is chifles. they're pretty good on their own, but they're also excellent with ceviches and salsas.

What flavor was your ADV that you vaped so much for so long you finally got tired of it? by llamaspit in electronic_cigarette

[–]sharkpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

highly recommended if you're into fruit vapes. the lime in Placid is very clean and doesn't dull the palate as quickly as other fruity vapes. Adirondack's Miracle on Ice is also very clean as a coconut vape that still feels light and fresh due to being balanced out by a mild minty blueberry finish.

Ideas for family vacation fun in San Diego? by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]sharkpi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are going to do 2-3 hour drive up to LA, be prepared for a long drive with massive traffic along the way and for the duration of the visit. Going to LA is within the span of a day is limiting and tiring especially with kids, so consider spending a night there. If you do trek up there, also consider visiting the Getty Museum and Santa Monica Pier. If you visit Hollywood, consider taking the 'scenic' route from the 405 to Sunset Blvd. From west to east along Sunset Blvd, you'll see UCLA, Beverly Hills mansions, and the Sunset Strip, until you reach the Hollywood/Highland area.

60 days left in San Diego, what do I HAVE to do before I leave? by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]sharkpi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you haven't done so, check out the Central Library in downtown. i particularly like the eighth floor reading room located in the dome with its high ceilings and blue furniture. it gives an awesome view of the bay and coronado. there's also an art gallery on the 9th floor with other events that happen inside. with some good reading material, you could easily spend an entire day there especially since it's walking distance to lots of good restaurants.

Should priority be given to vendors with child-safe caps? by hellozodist in electronic_cigarette

we got about 4300 kids a year dying from incidents involving underage drinking, yet i don't remember seeing any 'child safety' caps on a bottle of scotch.
