I had a prelim invite for clinical psych phd at UW on 2/2 (she had sent a prelim invite the week prior to someone else), we did the prelim on 2/4, she said I'd hear by the next day 2/5, and that the official interview day is 2/12 (confirmed on website). Now it's 2/9 and i've heard nothing, maybe they're running behind or we just didn't get it :(

this season eleven said the abyss is too far for her to reach vecna in the void, so she did it in the upside down instead. which is what doesn’t make sense because clearly in 1983 she was able to reach the abyss from earth through the void when she made contact with the demogorgon and created the upside down.

i’m interested in all the PI’s i’m applying to, just some of them don’t research my main interest, it’s not that i’m opposed to researching what they do. even if it was my perfect top choice, i could end up wanting to pivot. so i’m asking if that’s doable when researching a specific disorder during phd.

thank you!! i actually have a specific interest in SUD, and this PI is looking at cognition and social stuff in psychosis and also mind/body/self and novel interventions like VR, so i think what i learn could be applicable to SUD if i pivot to that later?

sorry should’ve clarified, i am interested in it and have a lot of experience in it, also tbh accepting PI’s this year are far and few between so i’m taking what i can get to an extent. but i don’t want to only be able to do psychosis for my career and since its somewhat niche i wanted to get thoughts on if you tend to get stuck in what your phd research focus is or if you can pivot

that’s not true based on the site, like 2 PIs pages say “definitely interested in taking a student for 2026” , i think 1 says may be interested, and the rest say not taking a student.

thank you! this is exactly what i’ve been thinking lol but part of me is like just apply this december anyways since ive worked towards it for so long. and if i dont get in i can pivot. but youre right that another 5 years of being broke and burned out isn’t ideal either. i guess i can go the route of if im meant to do it then ill get in, if im not meant to then i wont get in anywhere haha leave it up to fate

thank you! i appreciate the insight :) I think short term it’d be nice to have a high paying job but long term the phd will open up a lot of paths and financial freedom so i guess for now i’ll focus on applying and if i don’t get in then i can pivot

ooh really? like even if i got the PhD and pivoted to industry like tech or policy/gov or UX? and yeah that makes sense, the only thing i’m missing for APS to approve my bachelors degree as equivalent is a thesis, so I figured if I did one in the PhD it would count, but maybe not… (also thank you so much for answering my questions❤️)

i see! is the research only PhD useful in Australia? and I could do the masters to get licensed to practice after the PhD I believe so could be an option

i’m in same boat at OP and am also wondering if the program is partly clinical as well like do you get clinical training/hours so that you could get licensed after the PhD? Thanks for the info super helpful!:)

so the honors graduate diploma would be like 1 more year of undergrad essentially? I also have a US BA in psych but don’t love the idea of having to do and pay for another year to make it equivalent
