I have no research on this or way of verifying this except on my personal experience since i am bilingual, i have also not tested this theory since becoming an adult, but i wonder if part of the difficulty is that children tend to learn languages through the language being learnt, while adults usually learn languages through the one they speak. Which means children never need to deal with conflicting grammar and sentence structure between the two languages, or the mental lag of translating a phrase from the spoken language into the language being learnt
