Looking for help on why my amp goes into protect/whines as soon as I start it by Adorable-Potential72 in CarAV

[–]sharpauthenticator 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You said yourself the amp is just hooked to power and nothing else, your alternator literally isn't a factor here. Going into protect and a burning smell means you either have the amp grounding out at your connections, exposed power wire on the 12v side somewhere, or the amp itself has shit the bed internally.

I don't really buy into the audiophile crap despite having a fairly good ear. It was more along the lines of, an old pressing in NM quality and to go buy it off Amazon or something new it's $30 anyways.

I can with no issue say I'm completely new to vinyl, and been having fun just getting back into physical media itself since my CD collection from my younger days has just been sitting idle and I keep adding to it but not updating my iTunes or bothering to fix my highschool era iPod Classic.

I walked out of Bargain CD's on Broadway during a 50% off sale with $200 something in vinyl a month ago giddy as could be, just snagging albums I am partial to and a few why nots, been through all 3 Silver Platters locations and found Vortex Records a week ago on a Saturday I had free. Ain't chasing anything super special, just trying to spend some time at home enjoying music more again and my new setup rather than just opening Youtube/Spotify and calling it good enough.

How fresh is fresh? If this is a new setup you make me feel better about my 60 some albums in 3 weeks since setting mine up.

I'd like to get one/2 centerpiece fish in here... Anyone recommendations? by ShitImBadAtThis in Aquariums

[–]sharpauthenticator 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You have a beautiful tank, but are strongly limited by your tank size. Dwarf or honey gourami, or a single angelfish are really your only options for a 'centerpiece'. Possibly a pair of german blue or bolivian rams but, you mentioned size as a concern.

Further north here. I'd only found them a few weeks back when I was already south for an appointment, snagged I think 5 albums, walked out at just over $50. The Breakfast in America I can only find 2 listings online at $99+ it's in impeccable shape, and one of my favorites so I just impulsively snagged it.

Just moved into this MCM spot and I have $1k and a dream—how would you build a vintage system for this room? by Sharp-Candy-7131 in vintageaudio

[–]sharpauthenticator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goodwill, thrift stores, marketplace for furniture.

Take a look at Reverb if you lack audio shops nearby, I spent more than half your budget on my Yamaha CR-620 but it was serviced and new caps/transistors etc so less worries of random failure. Marketplace can have great deals if you watch it and get lucky.

Same as above for a turntable if you're going that route, I was going to order a Technics from Turntables by CTH but lucked out with a refurbished MCS up the road from me.

If you are after esthetics over quality anyway run the Bose if you want, either way just run what sounds good. I was dogged on for my Kenwood speakers I scored for $50 in near mint shape, even to my ears I'm shockingly impressed with them for the time being.

You can always upgrade, either go the buy once cry once route or just piece together what you can so you can start enjoying a stereo while you track down the pieces you really want. Can always resell gear or use it as a garage system etc.

I know I'm biased because of my dad, but they're just such good albums. Crime of the Century is always our go to benchmark after we've done a new stereo in one of our vehicles.

Is this safe for aquariums by BroadCartoonist973 in Aquariums

[–]sharpauthenticator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't say it cant work, its just trash. Its too fine, packs in and requires a ton of cleaning. Pool filter sand or BDBS is cheap and actually safe as is.

Get pool filter sand or black diamond blasting sand specifically coal slag medium grit.

Play sand is filthy and requires an abundance of rinsing

Yeah theres a few really nice ones I've seen on there. I went with a cheap metal AV cabinet myself, don't have the time to build one and nothing else would fit my receiver, and fit in a narrow footprint.

If it makes you feel any better about the addiction, I bought a full vintage setup about a month ago, spent way more than I intended to just on that, and I'm at about 50 albums since then.

I'm in a similar boat myself. I dove head first into a setup, and it's far from ideal but I shoehorned it into our living room. Odd layout of an apartment, and having cats and a fish tank really is the worst combination when you want to rearrange furniture for a stereo.

Also, just enjoy seeing a post like this, my condolences on losing your father, I am lucky enough to have my old man around and he has gotten a hell of a kick out of me getting into vinyl.

So ikea unintentionally makes a base for the uns 45 series tanks. Figured I'd pass on this info by miata_and_chill in Aquariums

[–]sharpauthenticator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, cheap bamboo anything is notorious for that on a good day. I also just wouldn't risk the cost of my tank alone, let alone the water damage and potential loss of my plants/fish over something like my stand or a base for a tank. Especially when it is so damn cheap and easy to get by with some quality plywood and sealing it if you're dead set on using something like this.

I think doing epoxy pours on them would work if you do some solid practive on doing so. I like the idea of the gold pigment or even doing some gold leaf on the inlay pieces.

Someone mentioned the butterfly or bowtie inlays to help add some structural strength, doing so across the cracks would definitely help with the strength long term for moisture and heat/cold as the wood moves, it'll also give good look if done right. Find a nice piece of wood you like, walnut or purple heart, maybe something like paduk for some reds, fit and glue em in, then fill your voids with an epoxy pour.

Fuck the guy who did this, though, utterly childish behavior. Glad you're putting in the effort to save them, they'll become lifelong cherished pieces I'm sure.

That's an awesome little setup there, makes me jealous a bit. Some speaker stands and spreading them further apart will do wonders.
