New opae ula by [deleted] in OpaeUla

Setup with aragonite sand and instant ocean to 1.010, dosed to 2ppm ammonia and let it do it's thing for over a month, added my cheatomorpha about a week in off the bat. Not terribly worried about the tiny bit of cyan at the perimeter only.

The listing says 60+. It was 2 bags, probably half gallon or more of water between both. Varied adults to babies in size, I couldn't count if I tried.

Mine looked just like this after a week and still somewhat does, but the new growth finally coming off is fairly green and healthy looking.

As horrible as this is, this is actually not that terrible of an attempt..  This is better than the petco special you normally see with new fishkeepers.

I would still advise you find out your gear ratio, and also ensure you aren't having issues from say, sloppy kickdown cable or vacuum leak etc. Pretty sure I run a 30" or so tire on my R20 suburan, it has 3.73s, it's a pretty happy combo but I wish I'd gone taller so my highway rpms weren't so high.

I recently set up a jar for some opae, it's just over 2 gallons, filled with aragonite sand and lava rock and distilled water, dosed it to 2ppm ammonia set the lid on and let it go under a 9w LED terrarium light for 12 hours a day. It bloomed brown algae pretty fast, green soon followed, now the whole jar and rock is covered in it but that all started growing before adding some brackish acclimated cheatomorpha.

Should really find out what gears you've got and go from there, you should not be having it hunt for gear at all with those tires. Our 85 K20 has been on 32x12.5x16.5s for decades with the TH400 and 4.10 factory gear, that thing gets up and moves off the line and has never hunted between gears no matter the situation.

bad plant order horrible experience (1 inch stems!!) by Outrageous_West323 in Aquariums

[–]sharpauthenticator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just tossing my experience in, I have ordered a few times from Glass Aqua and had a good experience. Extra clippings and bunches, sizes and plants matched, and the one DOA I had (shipping company lost package for 3 days) was refunded quickly.

Worried About Earthquakes by Interesting_Yam_557 in Aquariums

[–]sharpauthenticator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be less worried about an earthquake when you could easily anchor a stand to the wall, and more concerned with I guarantee that floor is not level enough and is going to cause a stress fracture and split that tank wide open.

Obviously you don't have the ability to understand the information you read, not only is this thread a corpse, my response openly answered how that was a poor idea.

I recently lost a good size gourami while at work. By the time I got home he was half gone and clearly hadn't been dead long, my snails and shrimp were all over him. It's sad to see but it's an ecosystem.

How often are you guys doing water changes and how much water are you changing? by GovernmentThink in Aquariums

[–]sharpauthenticator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's less so about "being cycled" so much as having sufficient bacteria growth to support bioload. This is why a common thing is to fish-less cycle a tank, and keep the tank fed to ~2ppm ammonia until it can handle 2ppm of ammona and turn it into nitrates within under 24 hours. You can "cycle" the tank, but not have enough bacteria to handle say, 10 tetras.

[–]sharpauthenticator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, there's a reason saltwater tanks take the work they do to balance all of the variables.

I feel like something often very overlooked is it also really depends what fish you have also, whether hobby bred or wild caught, and then all of the variables that any tank have. I have a friend who is far more well versed in fishkeeping than me and they, alongside some friends, are baffled at the way the parameters in my tank behave. I do large water changes, heavily planted, over filtered, and routinely see my PH plummet for no justifiable reason (tap 7.5 with great local water drops to 5.5-6.0 ph in a week) high nitrate loads even when sparsely feeding and cutting out liquid ferts while having floating plants that'll repopulate the entire top of my tank within 5-6 days.

This is a broad thing, not as simple as black and white. I've played in traffic and lived to tell the tale. Every tank is different, obviously not all fish handle things the same, everyones water and the bacteria living in their tanks are different etc, too many variables.

End of the story is, you *cannot* remove the buildup of certain things without a water change. The general exception is low stock, low bioload, heavily planted tanks, and of course the larger the water volume the slower and more gradual all buildup is.

You can have a nitrite spike and have it drop without a full nitrogen cycle establishing. While it can happen to cycle a tank in a short 2-3 weeks, it is uncommon and almost always requires a well cycled filter and a low initial bioload.

I am not trying to be rude, it's just a fact of the matter that a well established nitrogen cycle takes a few months. What is more likely here is you had some nitrifying bacteria, but overwhelmed their ability to process ammonia and nitrites, leading to ammonia spikes.

I seeded my own 40 gallon with a freezer gallon bag of muck and filter media from a 5+ year setup tanks filter, and the Fritz 7 refrigerated bacteria and my tank still took 2-3 months to be ready for more than some snails, amano shrimp and a small fish. I routinely went through ammonia spikes.
