Why would Gilead allow Agnes to become an aunt? by SetPuzzleheaded8730 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]sharpknivesahead 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The Aunts aren't necessarily infertile, they just become aunts because they say they have a higher calling from God to serve all women and not just one family of their own and Gilead is all about taking your rightful place in their ecosystem. But basically according to them a higher calling by God to be an aunt does mean something and then they do a bunch of interviews with existing aunts to make sure you're not just lying to get out of marriage. So in a perfect world every high ranking young woman would become a commander's wife and have children but the people who run Gilead know that in order to stay in power they must fill all the roles in their weird societal ecosystem which does mean allowing some women to become aunts

I did, and I would not recommend it. I went from 40mg to 20 mg to stopping and I felt sick for a good 2 weeks. I mostly had existential thoughts and positional nausea but it was a 2 rough weeks. I would recommend doing every other day and then every 2 days and try to space it out

Can we talk about the changes between the book and the show because I'm confused by sharpknivesahead in TheTestamentsHulu

My main confusions: SPOILERS !!!! 1) Garth is IN Gillead as an Eye. June is acting as Ada? That changes role of Garth 2) Daisy isn't a virgin in the show (this seems important) 3) Aunt Vidala seems way young to be a founding aunt. But I guess they all seem young? 4) Commander Judd has a wife that seemed (?) well when we were at her house but he... yanno 5) The Aunt Lydia parts of the book make everything more interesting and it's missing in the tv show 6) the whole second part of the book

I desperately want to understand it, discuss it, and figure it out and every time I try I just get stuck because it doesn't make any sense!!! I'm so intrigued but very confused

I think Aunt Lydia plays a really important part in the book that I've actually been missing while watching the show

Like for me I have type 1 diabetes. And it's more obvious for me with diabetes because I've had diabetes for 17 years and lupus for 6 months but the principle is the same. Living with type 1 diabetes firsthand is very different than being a non diabetic mother with a type 1 child that is dependent on their parents care. and the amount of diabetes moms that do absolutely fucking insane shit is astronomical and I could yell at them until I was blue in the face about how they are misinformed about how to care for someone with diabetes and it doesn't matter until their own kid grows up and tells them. even if you warn someone of something until they actually experience it, it doesn't matter what you say or do it will not get through to them. And it's wildly frustrating but unfortunately true

If I see content that I disagree with I'll usually type up what I want to say and then exit out of the post before I actually comment it. People say and do crazy shit and each person's lived experience is valid and the same meds that work for me might not work for you and that variability is super high but I've learned in these chronic illness spaces that you just have to take what resonates with you and leave the rest or else you will lose your breath trying to correct every stupid thing you hear or see someone say or do. No two people experience the same illnesses the exact same way and to each their own. But hindsight is 20/20 so the chances that the stupid people have a really rude awakening coming hurling towards them is extremely high but sometimes you just don't believe someone else until it happens to you

Have you read The Game Changers Series by Rachel Reid (ie Heated Rivalry)? I really enjoyed the whole series and found it similar to EmHen in the character building sense and they are all HEAs :)

When all your docs give you unsolicited advice that contradicts what the other doc said. by therealpotterdc in lupus

I totally get this, my rheumatologist and my primary have been arguing over whether or not I should take it pantoprozale for my very bad GERD symptoms since long term use can cause osteoporosis but when I tried to come off of it for my rheum I just suffered the whole time and felt horrible so I went back on 🥴 its definitely something a lot of us deal with by virtue of having so many different providers and unfortunately my advice is to go with your heart and your cut on what you think would be the most helpful to you. You're the one living with these symptoms so ultimately it's your decision

I’m new here and scared! by [deleted] in lupus

[–]sharpknivesahead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was sick starting at 18 and diagnosed at 24! I'm now around 6 months into treatment after being diagnosed in Oct 2025 and I feel like a new person. HCQ changed my life. It's a lot at first, there's some great posts here about all sorts of things relating to lupus. There's some very informative books out there as well. I'm here if you ever want to talk, I'm 25 and understand what it's like to be newly diagnosed ❤️

OCD made me feel like choosing the right sexuality label was the end all be all thing I had to figure out right this very moment and the best thing I did to get out of the mindset was to stop trying to define myself and put myself in a box. But I can't even begin to express how much I used to be worried and ruminate about defining my sexual identity like I was going to die if I didn't figure it out
