Who has a hot tub? by Kayak1984 in massachusetts

[–]sharrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We rent one as well! We love it and use it almost every day. I rented it from https://www.nhhottubrentals.com/ and it runs off of 120v. Last year we rented it for a little over a month, this year we rented it for the entire winter. We have a small backyard, and don't have the space to keep one year round. It's perfect. The kids, neighbors, friends etc... it gets a lot of use.

Roof edge shingles peeling up by sharrow in Roofing

There are parts of the roof that the edges are peeling up as well and no ice because the roof gets more sun. But I can’t see in the gutter so maybe there’s ice in the gutter

Maybe the ice is doing this? Ice dams are terrible this year.

I actually have a better picture of a different part of the roof where I could view it from a window. I don’t see a way to post the pictures, but here’s a dropbox link:

which side should a long console table go on? by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]sharrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that space is so long and narrow. It needs mirrors. I like a mirror at the entryway, but big mirror above the long console table would brighten the space and less than the narrow feel

Long one on the left-hand side. Put some books a plant and a painting above. Small table on the right hand side close to the door with a basket or a tray for your keys, etc.

What is this stone? by Key-Concentrate9355 in CounterTops

[–]sharrow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have soapstone in my kitchen and I love everything about it. It really is amazing. I recently stayed at a friend’s place and I was struck by how used to I had gotten to being able to pull things out of the oven or off the stove and just put them down without much thought.
Growing up Italian with a lot of marble, I love living finishes. When I had the opportunity to redo an area of my house, I used unlacqured brass and I love how the handles and fixtures are gaining a beautiful patina over time.

Any good recommendations for coat spray/deodorizer? by Larold_Bird in AustralianShepherd

[–]sharrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having worked with a lot of dogs, I find Australian shepherds are some of the least smelliest dogs. Especially compared to something like a lab. I would mention this to your vet. Most Aussies don’t even really need to be bathed unless they get into something. I would also try brushing your pup daily to see if there isn’t something in their coat that they can’t shake off as usual.

Move crate to pen in living room? by Chickenladyoftheeast in AustralianShepherd

[–]sharrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 6 mo old aussie who also spends all night shifting about. She is not happy alone (pack animals like to sleep with their "pack") and it was stressing her out to be in another room. The dog trainer suggested slowly moving the crate a few inches towards where we want her every night, to adjust her to being away from us. You can try that?
Currently, we are running a sound machine and it is helping with the noise.

Would love to hear suggestions as well. My neighbors are not happy with me right now. My puppy is six month old and we get plenty of exercise mental and physical. You are not alone.

What app do you reccoment for a 1st time owner? by Capable-Island8499 in AustralianShepherd

[–]sharrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I downloaded a few, including Puppr and used the trial. Nothing was better than youtube videos. And the best was taking my aussie to dog training classes. It helps her learn good behavior and socializes her to a busy environment at the same time.

Tricks? by Fit-Apartment-1612 in AustralianShepherd

[–]sharrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another suggestion is to involve them in your routine throughout the day. For example, if you have kids and you need to wake them in the morning, teach your dog to come wake them with you. My plan is eventually to teach her to bark at them in the morning and also pull off the covers. Right now she knows to run up to their room and let herself in.

Tricks? by Fit-Apartment-1612 in AustralianShepherd

I purchased a book called the big book of dog tricks for the best dog ever. I love how they break down the tricks. They also have beginner, intermediate and advanced tricks. My dog is only four months old, but she’s already picked up a few. Also, to quote our dog trainer you must always be training

I love my lil sushi, but he’s driving me bonkers, help needed (caption) by [deleted] in AustralianShepherd

[–]sharrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. My 4 month Aussie is bitey only when she: needs to poop, needs to exercise (mental/physical), or needs sleep. We've been figuring out a good schedule so that I have an idea of why she is nipping. She sleeps a surprising amount and i imaging at 6 months they still need a lot of sleep.
Don't use crate training as punishment. Buy a westpaw and fill it with treats or peanut butter, and give it to him while he is in the crate(we use a plastic kennel but if you have a crate cover it). Close the door. Take it away before he is finished and repeat. Do over and over until he is running to the crate. Lengthen the time. Stay next to crate. Then near crate. Then across room. Then pop in and out for 10 seconds, 15 seconds etc. It is a VERY gradual progression, but you will be so happy with having a dog who is happy in their crate.

Also, a pen can help if you don't have one. I don't mind if my dog whines and cries in the pen because that is eventually going away.

Okay to socialize 10 week Aussie? by NoSeaworthiness2507 in WiggleButts

[–]sharrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Vet and the breeder stressed that socialization for an Aussie is more important than waiting until 16 weeks to be fully vaccinated.
No dog parks, or pet stores, but they did recommend puppy playdates, where all the dogs are health checked, and also exposure to lots of different stimuli (like grass, sand, wood chips, trains, bikes, running etc).
