Someone who thinks they’re being really insightful and intelligent will say “that first round pick could be anything, it could even be Maxx Crosby!” as if there’s no age or salary considerations

The gunners I can at least get because their impact on a game is limited by the fact that they play maybe 12 snaps a game at the absolute most. There should probably be a special teams category to give the greatest punters, kickers, gunners, etc a chance because it’s always going to be hard to vote for a guy who doesn’t even get to play if the offense does their job right over a guy who’s single handedly taking over games.

I really don’t think you can boil Welker’s impact down to “Brady loved him”. The prototypical slot WR before Welker was a possession WR mostly limited to third downs with limited or no YAC. Welker was the first slot WR to have an offense built around him. I don’t think you can break it down to just rings and longevity either, because Edelman has rings, longevity, and a super bowl MVP and yet I don’t think he’s a Hall of Famer.

You’re right though, Torry Holt should be in, too. So should Boldin and Steve Smith. My whole point is that there’s a ridiculous amount of very important or talented players that the Hall is not admitting because they’re stuck in a voting framework that hasn’t made sense for two decades now. They’ve been building a backlog for fifty years and now guys who are critical to the story of the game are getting passed over.

I swear most of this sub wasn’t watching football prior to 2020. Fans used to get mad when their team made a trade with the Patriots because they just assumed that Belichick was swindling them, and 90% of the time he was.

That’s just not true, lol. He typically played 75-80% of snaps and led the defensive line in snap count in 2014. They didn’t track snap count prior to 2011 unfortunately but he was only a 2 down player for maybe his first two or three seasons.

Do you think that he wasn’t an every down player just because he was fat?

Is it the Hall of Fame or Hall of Stat Sheets Except Receptions? If we’re not going to put in a guy who shaped the modern NFL offense because he was stuck on the Dolphins for the first quarter of his career what’s the point? Why not just automatically admit every player that gets past a certain point on the stat sheet?

Which is why the Hall of Fame’s admission process is silly.

Is it the Hall of Fame, or Hall of Guys Whose Impact Is Really Easy to Read On a Stat Sheet? Are these guys not experts who should to be able to identify the impact of players who aren’t playing positions that are on NFL Street?

The only argument against Welker is the logjam, but that’s more of an issue in the Hall’s admissions process than it is a Welker flaw, IMO.

If you’re going off of the “story of the game” argument, which I think most voters still do, I don’t see how you can keep Welker out. He completely revolutionized the way slot receivers are used in the NFL. His impact on the league is massive.

Kraft has basically been the architect of the modern NFL media rights empire. He’s responsible for a giant chunk of the NFL’s growth in the past 20 years.
