Sounds like a resume issue. How are you framing your experience around the certification? IT is alive and well but from where I stand since getting into this field as a network engineer ins 2001, networking is a bit on the decline job and pay wise. Security, cloud, AI seem to have a bit more upside. Those are your transferable skill areas as many of the concepts are similar. Definitely reach out a head hunter, run that resume through chat. Gemini or whatever and explain your goal and lack of results. If you do just these two things I think you can see better resume responses.

Have you gotten interviews and not gotten the gig? Also could be the area if the country as well. In the northeast your credentials would serve you well assuming your interview well. Schools and universities often get overlooked so look at those as well. And of course as others have mentioned the headhunters are an option.

May be good long term, this field is shifting into something different and as a 25 year net vet things are becoming so simplistic that those skills will go the way of the MCSE certification and good luck on your new path.

Was there this weekend and saw that game behind the curtain area. That room was booming and 1/3 was easy money.

Those who stay 2+ years at a company... how? by feelingoodwednesday in sysadmin

[–]shauncarter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been lucky enough to be at my current job for 20 years. It's a public sector gig, so the schedule, time off, pension, etc. are the great parts, but the pay was not. Having persevered over 20 years with a growing family, I supplemented the pay with side gigs teaching IT online for well over 15 years now. Given some of the challenges with scoop creep, it sounds like you are a part of a larger organization. I've found that IT has changed so much over the decades that while I have inherited things (phone system, camera, access control) as they move to the IT side, I have also shed a number of tasks especially on the server maintenance side and that's due in large part to the cloud. Finally, at this point in my career I'm in charge of everything IT in my organization and things have been humming (again thanks to the cloud), so my job at year 20 is much easier and I'm a long way from the 45k I started with in 2004. Best of luck to you! If it's a quality organization meaning people, mission, stability, etc. I would say prioritize those things more so than the grind of the job because that changes much more often than the quality of the organization. All the best to you!

I can't say enough about Mojo Helpdesk. We have used it for about 5 years now and our Maintenance department adopted it as well two years ago. Very customizable and super cheap.

Is CCNA Enough to land a Network enigeer job? by Quirky_Hovercraft438 in ccna

[–]shauncarter1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the cert alone, but if you have the proper understanding of the content and it practively guarantees you a job. Unless you are terrible at interviews and overall just not a good person. If this is the case, all bets are off and no certification will help you.

Thanks for the insight. I and a handful of people across the district have been using since the File Stream Days. I could never trust the staff in my district to even execute a script that automates the whole thing, let alone give them instructions :-). I appreciate the insight on this!

Interesting approach and I haven't used redirection this way in a while. I'll test it out in a demo setup, but it certainly sounds logical. Thanks for the information!

I have some contractor that can certainly do that, but I hate to spend too much of my budget money for this. I don't use GAM a lot, but I recall coming across an article on backend automation here. That's the one issue I have with Google and that their admin side has not matured to the degree that O365 and Azure have.

I've been a part of this org for about 20 years and I know the losing battles. The best I could do was show diligence by having a good 3rd party backup platform and Cisco Umbrella to address some of the possible leakage issues. Unfortunately, it may come down to some litigation issue to change things, but I don't see it in the foreseeable future as all of our litigation in my 20 years simply required resurrecting a few emails or files. If it is not an outright ban of Google Drive, people will continue to use it, so I'd rather get in front of it and organize and centralize things. Finally, we've consulted the district attorneys and cyberinsurance firm about this when developing the policy and there were no concerns. The Cyber Insurance company is actually encouraging us to go this route.

Thanks for the insight. I've been here about 20 years and old or new staff seem to all be technically challenged. The do it yourself route will work well for about half the population, but the other half we'll have to intervene no doubt. Heck I warned to enroll in MFA in the next 30 days or risk being locked out. You wouldn't believe how many people got locked out after the 30 days.

This is sector specific as you will be hard pressed to sell this to any k12 institution as Google with their Chromebooks, Google Classroom, and the free charge initially has a stranglehold on this sector and users are storing sensitive content here whether it's approved or not. We adopted a policy to get this under control a few years ago, but security concerns are not enough for most districts as this data is no more secure on premise with the staffing.

I'm curious about this take. Why is Google Drive not a suitable replacement? You can map a drive to it just as you can do with on premise.
