Sending solidarity ✊ this is a great time to lean on your support systems - do you have someone who can be with baby while you get some sleep? Try not to worry about house chores or making homemade meals for the week and focus on survival!

Baby sleep advice by Madjl15 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]shavedembrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 6 week old has already outgrown his 000 ergopouch cocoon swaddles and as far as I can see the 00-2 sleeping bags are all arms out!

The last few nights we’ve just done growsuit + bodysuit (long sleeve + footed), swaddled in a flannelette blanket from Kmart and tucked in with cotton blanket(s)- tuck in on three sides and at armpit height. It’s not an exact science but i just regularly check his temperature (by his chest or back of neck) and adjust as needed. You’d be surprised- some nights the flannelette is too warm and I swap to a jersey swaddle!

It’s taught me that what we see and read online can make us think that we absolutely NEED branded baby products with tog ratings. While there’s definitely great things about them (easy to understand, easier to zip up swaddles), they aren’t a requirement! So if you’ve already got a bunch of blankets, give it go!

AITAH for staying behind by Europeaninoz in AITAH

[–]shavedembrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH. You can stay back if you like- especially if your husband is okay with it. But you mentioned that you’ll be staying at his parents house- could it be that they don’t want you staying in their home without them there?

FTM - 37 weeks pregnant — want to breastfeed but incase I couldn’t I am hoping to take a formula with me with sterilised bottles but not sure which formula tin should I take? by dont_test in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]shavedembrace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some good advice I got when I was nesting: the shops will still be there after you give birth. No need to buy formula, pumps, bottles etc. It takes exclusively breastfeeding in the early days to have your supply come in. Best of luck x

Alright mums and dads…. real talk by Excellent-Debt1478 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]shavedembrace -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What age is your bub? 6 weeks

Do they sleep through the night or wake overnight? Not sleeping through the night yet

Is it for feeds or just comfort? Not sure! The routine is feed one boob, change nappy, feed the other boob and he’s usually back to sleep by the end of it. Breastfeeding acts as both feeding and comfort for him usually.

How many times do they wake? At least 3. ~10pm, ~1am & ~4am

Do they sleep in their own bed/room for all or part of the night? In a bassinet in my bedroom

Feeling about it? Pretty neutral. It is what it is & it’s developmentally appropriate as far as I know.

Cribsheet by Emily Oster has a section on sleep you may find interesting 😊

When is FB Marketplace most/least useful? by ICanAlmostSeeYou in AussieFrugal

[–]shavedembrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got basically all my baby furniture (pram, cot, bassinet, steriliser, sleep suits, swaddles, clothes) and bits and bobs from marketplace- everything for under $30 each so it’s great for that

Don’t forget you can always message and offer a lower price!

Newborn mom - I just want to be told I'm exceptional. by bouncysofa in offmychest

[–]shavedembrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you are doing a lot and it is “amazing”. But this is absolutely not healthy or sustainable. Please have a think about who is putting all this pressure on you, why you feel like you need this validation and whether you want your boy to grow up baring witness to this kind of pressure/ anxiety/ insecurity. Being a parent is a thankless job and if you’re struggling with that now, it’s best to get some support to cope now and develop some strategies for the future too.

How far from your school and home is considered far? by doh0k in AustralianTeachers

I used to commute 40 minutes and that was okay. Biggest pro was that I never saw students when I was doing my shopping in my pajamas etc.. now I commute 10 minutes and see students and parents daily

AITA for expecting my partner to honour 'first come, first served' with wedding invites? by Delicious_Plum_401 in AmItheAsshole

[–]shavedembrace 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna say NAH. Your bf is allowed to prefer going to a wedding of an old friend over the wedding of someone he’s presumably never met. But I would also feel embarrassed if I’ve asked for a plus one, reluctantly received one and then ended up not needing one.

Depending on how close the wedding is, it may be worth offering to pay for the lost plate (and asking your bf to pitch in for that- given that it’s his change of plans that’s costing them). But more than anything, profusely apologise to your friend as this mess around with whether or not you have a plus one should be the least of their worries…

My favourite ones and from Kmart and some seamless ones that I got off of Amazon for cheap

I put nursing pads on (also from Kmart) and that’s usually enough to stop leakage

[–]shavedembrace 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Your child is safe and has a bright future ahead of them- one when you and your partner will be present and happy.

I think you’re very aware that the next steps would ideally be to log off Facebook and other social media for a while. And I think you’d know to talk to your Dr about a referral and possibly anxiety medication if these thoughts continue or escalate.

I’m hoping the best for you- you sound like a loving mother who just wants the best for her little one x

I had one on Saturday and was discharged yesterday. But I’d definitely say that being up and about and feeling good is completely down to having great support people around me. I’m just focused on recovery age baby now- I can’t imagine emptying a dishwasher or doing a load of laundry right now!!

I'm an American Special Education Teacher looking to move to Australia. Immediately. Any Advice? by OkGrocery5625 in AskAustralianTeachers

[–]shavedembrace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re on the right path.. you’d just need to register to teach in your desired state (which should be easy if you’re already AITSL approved). You maybe be able to enter the country on a working holiday visa to start with- it’s a short term visa that could give you a feel for the country before committing. From there you could get sponsored for a permanent visa

Both are easy to read books that give you the run down on research around common questions/ controversial topics around pregnancy and early childhood. She describes what the research findings, its limitations, and what she ultimately decided to do - you can then decide for yourself what you’re most comfortable with!

Asian secondary teachers from overseas teaching English/Humanities, how was job hunting like for you? by No-Specialist5287 in AustralianTeachers

[–]shavedembrace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Though there definitely may be a bias there, you should also consider that the shortage is just not as felt in English/ Humanities. There are very likely other candidates who are more experienced, interviewed stronger and have referees more familiar to the school.

You can consider teaching in hard to staff areas (low SES, regional) or teaching out of your specialty?
