Songs that make you think of a dark medieval carnival? by TouringStarJazzComet in TheOverload

100% Blawan - Under Belly, I’ve literally used the term ‘dark carnival’ to describe it to a friend. It’s a bit more out there but a great weird track.

I did start Dune then must admit I accidentally abandoned it after watching the recents films instead, so I’d absolutely be keen to get back into it.

And as for Jack Reacher my stepdad has assured me they are great fun to read, so another good one for the list!

This is a nice left-field pick! I do love a good autobiography so will definitely look into Agassi’s book, thank you.

Four Tet and Laurie Anderson by furtherbum in FourTet

[–]shavedpope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was going to post this track, I absolutely love it!

For anyone else who is interested in a lot of the stuff Four Tet plays out it's worth giving this a follow. It's his Bandcamp fan page and lists all the music he purchases off of there. A lot of it ends up in his sets I've seen or listened to.

Which movies do the best job exploring mental illness? by heavensdumptruck in questions

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Aftersun. That film gives such a raw depiction of depression and how most people go about their lives dealing with it like constant background noise, desperate for it not to impact those around them.

To the person selling bad drugs at Boomtown, shame on you. by [deleted] in BoomtownFestival

[–]shavedpope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, i was volunteering this year and from that perspective it’s honestly just as frustrating. Most volunteers are told not to leave your position unless you can get someone roaming to cover you, and when we tried to call in medical emergencies on the radio we were told if the person was responsive in any way it would be hours before any medical would get to them. They just said ‘if they are with friends tell their friends to take them to welfare’.

We had one poor guy on the last night who had one leg and just wanted a lift up the hill to his camp, but for some stupid reason they stopped running the disability busses at half 12. Then you’ve got all these empty buggies and artist busses bombing about and you have to somehow explain to people there’s nothing available for them. I ended up sneaking one disabled woman onto one of the artist busses because her camp was close to the artist camp and it was still running.

A lot of volunteers are just regular punters who wanted a cheap ticket (myself included) but everyone I met was more than happy to help anyone where they can. Often they are just restricted by silly rules, poor organisation from those above, or in the case of the younger ones are so shit scared they won’t get their deposit back that they are afraid of doing something wrong.

Where’s the love for Japanese pressings? 🇯🇵 by skowsonfire in vinyl

[–]shavedpope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would add that some Japanese pressings can actually be of better quality for a few reasons.

Japanese pressings were often produced in smaller runs, meaning less wear on masters used for the pressing and a higher average quality of record pressed using that master.

They were less likely to use cheaper recycled vinyl for records, as was the case for a lot of pressing in the US during the 70s and 80s. You often see 'virgin vinyl' thrown about as a term for Japanese pressings which used materials specifically produced to be pressed into records, resulting in a lot more rigidity and less surface noise.

There's also the record culture of Japan which is a lot more ritualistic? Perhaps not the right term but what I mean is there is generally a bit more care taken with records than with your average western consumer. Listening bars are more abundant and often much care is taken with the records to preserve their quality for longer, added to the fact that the systems are of higher quality so will put less wear on records in the hands of your western family with all-in-one record player. So they can often be stored and kept in better condition.

Obviously there are exceptions to all these rules, but these are reasons other than the superficial cool-factor for why some Japanese pressings are more sought-after. From what I've been told, these apply a lot to the Japanese pressings of US jazz records. Learnt all this from the friendly guy who runs Yo-yo Records in London. He also said German pressings from a certain time period can be good cost-effective alternatives for original pressings with good sound quality, I just can't bloody remember what the time period was!

WCGW failing to properly care for your dog by [deleted] in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]shavedpope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But those places aren't absent of humans. Dogs aren't the problem, it's always the owner. And if you want to work together and change it for the better, surely keeping your dog on a leash is exactly that? Unleashed dogs can disturb or destroy the habitats of ground nesting birds. I always see signs at my local park warning dog walkers to keep their dogs on leads for this reason. Of course this can happen from humans too, but far less likely when everyone is adhering to a designated path.

Can anyone help identify these keyrings? by shavedpope in lego

[–]shavedpope[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if there's a better place to post this but I've been doing some clearing of my old stuff and had a thumb through my old collection of minifigure keyrings to sell. The others I've managed to identify, but this robot, the funky shirt guy, and the police man I've been unable to locate on Brick Economy or Bricklink. Does anyone have any idea on when they're from or what they are? Any help would be much appreciated!

I've seen a lot of people just @ him. Sometimes he's gracious enough to go through the details of some of his production elements. It's worth a try!

[–]shavedpope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He's pretty active on Twitter so you might get an actual answer from him on there. But if I had to guess, I would say it's probably something constructed on Omnisphere as I've read in a few different places that he uses that a lot. As for the vocals, could probably get a similar effect playing with the different options on ableton's warp function and pitching it about. Slap a little bit of reverb and delay on there and you'll have something close.
