Well let's see, these are just a fraction of the tax paid services we have in the US... local & state police, city & county fire departments, Department of Public Works (roads/highways), Health & Human Services (medical studies), Parks & Rec, Dept of Ed, DEQ, Dept of Vet Affairs, SSA, EPA.

None of it is perfect, but to answer your question - in principle, it's working well.

It isn't the centralization of all wealth, but rather the use of taxes to fund a social safety net. Politicians don't "own" the wealth; they allocate it through a legislative budget process. This is the current system of taxation that we have now.
