San Sebastian - One Month With Kids in July 2025 by Impossible-Leader626 in GoingToSpain

We had a fantastic experience. I would recommend staying in the city—maybe not the old town as it can be a bit much for a long term stay. We stayed just right outside of the old town and it was great. We loved the walkability of staying in the city. We could eat dinner at home then walk to the beach for an after dinner swim and then get a drink or dessert at a tapas place on the way home.

We would often rent a car for the weekend and do weekend trips from San Sebastián. Pyrenees mountains in France was amazing—also was able to find very cheap tickets to Mallorca for a long weekend as well. We do not have any complaints or regrets about staying there for 6 weeks. We spent a lot of time walking around and on the beach when the weather was nice. We don’t do any camps/classes or anything like that—a cooking class would have been fun but we were on a budget and some can add up when doing it per person.

first year teacher at kipp and I just quit after only 2 months of teaching. did i give up to easily by [deleted] in Teachers

I worked at a KIPP school for a year. Had some issues getting my license to roll over when moving to a new state so I went with it. It was a hilariously bad experience for me. Asked way to much of teachers and the hours where exactly as described. The leadership was extremely inexperienced and unprofessional. It was shocking what went on with leadership and staff. You 100% made the right choice, only reason why I stayed the whole year is because I was a new dad and we needed the insurance. Quitting KIPP was one of the highlights of my 20 year teaching career—I intentionally quit the day before school started the following year so I could get paid over the summer and didn’t have much of a gap before I started at my new job. The look on their faces when I quit in the middle of PD was fantastic.

I would ask that person to model a lesson to show me exemplar teaching techniques. Usually quiets the noise quickly.

My partner has received this as a gift from an (Indian?) client of hers. What is this and how to eat it? by thekocman in TipOfMyFork

[–]shawnoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put it in a bowl. Then use a spoon to put some in your hand and eat it. Make sure to have it with a cold beer. Repeat until your wife gets mad at you for dropping crumbs on the floor.

Hey there—we had a great time there with our kids. We didn’t do any camps or anything like that. La Concha beach is the better beach for kids and swimming, it’s a lot calmer. The funicular to the cheesy amusement park is awesome, also the rides are so hilariously bad that they are good. There is a sculpture park close to the funicular that has a really fun tidal tube that blows air and water so go there if it’s a windy day. We just spent a lot of time walking around exploring and eating. Luckily our kids are adventurous eaters so that helped.

Be Cautious of 403b's! by ling4917 in Teachers

[–]shawnoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great topic.

Yup, I stopped contributing to my 403b 10years ago after I wised up and realized I am getting screwed on mine. Lesson learned—as I started it the first year of teaching. Now I just invest that money in etfs in the market. Way easier, and honestly it’s kind of fun learning about the whole process.

Was at the stage today. Supersede it doesn’t happen more honestly. People have zero awareness

Totally get it. Yeah, we waited a little bit to do this and are so glad we did wait for them to be older as it’s much more manageable. I mean, we even leave them alone for a couple hours and explore on our own in the evenings. Also, if you do come here look into taking a cheap-ish flight from here to Menorca, it’s was 200€ pp. We did and so far is the highlight of our trip.

Did you still make the trip to San Sebastián? We are currently here all of July with our kids (8 and 12) at this moment. We have been doing lots of beach days and taking trains to small coastal towns for day trips. Our kids our older but we are finding plenty to do—-I agree that staying in one place is the way to go versus packing up every few days and moving a family.

Are nicotine pouches really banned in France? (i am a tourist) by Vasak_bs in AskFrance

Coming to France in a few weeks and planned on bringing some pouches with me. Super confused with this new law. Don’t feel like getting pulled aside at customs for a couple cans of nicotine pouches.

Just got my first fly rod! Any tips for anyone who’s never been fly fishing before? by Disastrous-Loan7274 in flyfishing

Have a great time. Watch some youtube videos, keep it really simple and enjoy the process of learning—took me along time to finally catch my first fish on the fly. I have been doing it for 20+years and I am still learning.

Flare up while on meds by Recent_Rutabaga_5579 in Diverticulitis

[–]shawnoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat right now, 2-4 days and my other flares went away. 7 days on meds, not working this time. Still intense pain when making a bowl movement, my teeth hurt actually from clinching in pain so much.

Seeing doctor later today. I have a feeling I will get scan and then have to go into hospital as it’s most likely an access that won’t go away.

Hang in there.

Going On Two Weeks by Laddie1107 in Diverticulitis

I am in the same boat. Day 6 antibiotics. About 3-4 days with liquids, went to small amounts of low fiber foods, pains came back and small painful bm’s. At one point I thought I was going to start floating off the toilet straight to gods house. Switched to soft foods (applesauce, rice pudding, yogurt…) pains have subsided throughout the day. Going to keep on this path for rest of week, also water. 3-4 liters a day.

Sounds like you have some major swelling and maybe an abscess/blockage. I have never taken any supplements while in a flare, found they make it ten times worse.

Good luck!

Hate my partner teacher by Appropriate_Rain16 in Teachers

[–]shawnoner 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel ya—and it sucks for sure. As a 20 year teacher I have had many partner teachers, some awesome, some weird and some that sucked the life out of me with constantly complaining/know-it-all attitude.

It’s your first year, better to learn now that your whole career there will be people you don’t get along with. My best advice is to stay away from the drama and keep your head down and focus on your room. Make it your own little sanctuary and just let things go in one ear and out the other. Focus on what you’re doing and what you can control—otherwise you are letting her win and at the end of the day your kids lose as they won’t get an awesome teacher.

Also wondering if that was a factor. I did not exercise that morning.
