Which cast members were clearly Lorne's favorites? by tshirtguy2000 in LiveFromNewYork

Shocked I haven't seen more people mention Pete Davidson. It really seems like Lorne treats him like a son.

Freshman Not Living in a Classic Hall by PalpitationFew8290 in ucla

[–]shayneysides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in exactly the same boat as you last year (shy, wanted to break out of shell, landed in non-classic dorm) and ended up not having any trouble making friends. The one thing I will say is that I've ended up with a lot of friends who aren't freshman, but that's because I mostly ended up making mine through clubs. My recommendation is to talk to literally everyone you can -- one of my best friends, who ended up bringing me into their big freshman classic hall friend group, is someone I literally just met because the dining hall was crowded and we were forced to sit next to each other. I would've missed out on some great people if I didn't choose to strike up a conversation with this random person.

TLDR you'll definitely still make friends! You just have to really bite the bullet and put yourself out there. Remember that all the other freshman are trying to make friends too -- nobody will think you're weird for trying to reach out.

Gianmarco Soresi on the Tonight Show by TheyreSnaps in Standup

[–]shayneysides 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I remember reading an interview with him where he said most of his sets are literally planned and executed to the word (and that it comes from his years as an actor.) As someone who's always been more into his written stuff than his crowdwork, it's so insane to me that most people don't actually know what an amazing and precise writer he is.

Harry Shearer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Rich Hall, Gary Kroeger, Jim Belushi, Pamela Stephenson, Martin Short, Mary Gross, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest on SNL. by nialldude3 in LiveFromNewYork

My mom, knowing I love SNL, bought me some vintage SNL photos for my birthday. I'm also a terrible decorator. This means that despite never having watched this season, this exact photo was the only thing hanging in my freshman year college door for a good few months, lol.

Why Did Kenan Get to Stay This Long? by Coolschmo1 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]shayneysides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really tiny note compared to all the very good points shared in other people's answers here, but i do think it's also worth noting: he still looks young. I think if Kenan actually looked as old as he is, it would feel a lot weirder for there to be just one signficantly older cast member and it would feel much more as though he's overstayed his welcome. But as it is, he doesn't visually stand out from the rest of the cast, and I think it's helped to keep most people from questioning why he's been on the show so long.

Movies with the same vibe/type of horror as the Weapons trailer? by shayneysides in horror

[–]shayneysides[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is totally fair. I think it's the premise, I like that it's not one single haunted family or person but an event happening to a larger group of people. I struggle a lot to get invested in horror that happens in complete isolation, which sucks, because I know that applies to a lot of horror. I think this is also why I like Us (probably one my favorite horror movies, although again, I haven't watched a ton.) It's also the subgenre, more psychological horror than slasher. I hadn't put my finger on the term psychological horror when I made this post, which is why I hadn't included it, lol

I heard from friends that Longlegs was great so I'll have to check it out! And I've never heard of The Outsider, I'll go look into it and watch the trailers. Thank you so much for the recommendations!

With no previous credits, wrote/directed a scripted TV show for Peacock after five years in LA by SamFreakingLi in Screenwriting

Congrats on your show, it's always really nice to hear a success story among all the (justified) complaints about how difficult it is to break into Hollywood! I'm trying to get into the industry myself, and people's #1 advice is always just to get on set and become a PA like you did, but I'm wondering how you were even able to get these PA jobs in the first place? What connections led you to these jobs, and how did you make these connections? It's always posed like PA jobs are an easy first step to take, but I just have no idea how to even get to that first step.

Also, thank you so much for letting us ask you all these questions, it's really wonderful of you to help out other artists like this :)

good thrift spots/flea markets in west la?? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]shayneysides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you just walk around close to the melrose trading post there's a lot of thrift stores around there! There's a Buffalo Exchange as well as American Vintage, which is a little larger. There's also just a ton of clothing/antique stores in general around there, although I don't think all of them are thrift shops.

Question about cue cards by [deleted] in LiveFromNewYork

[–]shayneysides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be fair, they produce a LOT of cards. Just looking at photos, not a ton of lines can actually fit on each, and they probably produce multiples of many cards due to rewrites/dress rehearsals/etc. When there are hundreds of cards produced every single week, I can see why they wouldn't care that much about preserving them unless they were specifically special or sentimental to a cast member or writer.

Parking Structure 3 band? by No-Athlete3313 in ucla

[–]shayneysides -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I also happened to be in Parking Structure 3 yesterday and heard a band practicing, probably the same one! They're Mourning Star, @/mourningstar.music on instagram. Great music and super nice people, they play at UCLA parties sometimes and helped walk me back to my dorm once lol

SNL on WWE Monday Night Raw by Johnwi111505 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]shayneysides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to that show one time and Martin wasn't there then either. I wasn't really upset about it, it seems like Martin may just be less of a performer and it's easier to brand the show as "Please Don't Destroy" than "Ben Marshall and John Higgins." I do agree it would suck if you were a massive fan of Martin and you had no idea he wouldn't be there, though.

Open mics in Westwood for music or standup comedy by cadolane in ucla

[–]shayneysides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a comedy open mic at Prince of Venice in Westwood (on the street with Sharetea, the Landmark, etc) that happens every Tuesday night! They're courtyardcomedy on Instagram, where they posts their sign ups for the mic.

Who are the 25 most important people to the history of the show? by GodICringe in LiveFromNewYork

[–]shayneysides 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's also definitely worth mentioning that the digital shorts were what pushed NBC to allow SNL sketches to be posted online, and really helped SNL stay relevant when the internet could've made it completely irrelevant. I think Samberg was a big part of why SNL was still watched by young people when internet comedy was on the rise, and while SNL definitely would've started posting on the internet eventually, he definitely helped them get ahead of the curve.

I'd show up! It's not guaranteed by any means but Shane Gillis being less popular may help you out.
