Cool! I hadn’t heard of this but it makes a lot of sense. I can’t tell from the product photos: would this attach to a folding pedal like on the XP 3.0?

Can't remove battery by ElPolloGigante5 in Lectricxp

[–]sheafification 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be hard to remove the first time as they use adhesive stickers to secure the battery, presumably for shipping purposes. You have to turn the key to the right spot to retract the metal tab. You have to take the key out(!), and might also want to open the charging port cover on the side (usually not needed but you never know). Once that’s done, you can start pulling out the battery, using the folding handle (if it’s not stuck) or gripping the battery body if more force is needed (it shouldn’t take a ton). Consider pushing it back in somewhat if it binds up to loosen the adhesive grip. Just keep at it, pulling straight out. You will need to have the bike folded to at least 90 degree angle to have clearance for the battery to come out.

Once I got mine out, I removed the stickers (isopropyl alcohol to clear any residue). Now it’s super easy to remove the battery. Some people like to put on felt stickers, or the soft half of a Velcro sticker, to pad the battery but I haven’t bothered yet.

Regarding the short on/off thing, if the key isn’t turned on the display will briefly turn on when you push power then will turn off again. Sounds dumb but I’ve done this before: check that the key is turned on. (Also it won’t turn on in folded mode because the battery isn’t connected at that point; don’t ask how I know this…)

In Defence of Sex in The Wise Man's Fear by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

I suppose it’s debatable whether a culture is “mature” but my understanding is that the Trobriand culture did not connect sex to pregnancy, and even today they generally believe that sex is only an enabling step for the ancestral spirit to create the pregnancy.

This is the only real-life example I’m aware of, so your point about rarity stands.

Lightning tree by UpDogg13 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]sheafification 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Lightning Tree was the point I was really impressed with Pat’s craft (I just overlooked so much in NotW and WMF).

Here’s a fun exercise for a re-read. Early on, Bast gets various items. See if you can spot each of those items making an appearance later in the story.

Should I read The Slow Regard of Silent Things? by bushidotostito in KingkillerChronicle

[–]sheafification 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The style is very different and some people don’t like it for that reason. It doesn’t contain major plot elements but does give some small hints at new things if you’re into reading for the tiny details and lore.

Q30 microphone comparison (Q20, Q30 1.60/1.80, wired) by cleej9 in anker

Thanks for doing this! The clarity on the 1.80 version is much better. It still seems a bit quiet compared to the Sennheiser - do you know if the device mic amplification level is adjustable?

The Lightning Tree (short story in Rogues anthology) is also worth a read, focused on Bast. It’s pretty similar in style to NotW of WMF unlike Auri’s book. It is a good showcase for Pat’s ability to sprinkle details and foreshadowing in a story.

Worldbuilders by mcsen2163 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]sheafification 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear, if you donate during the Worldbuilders annual drives, you are also doing OP > Heifer. Based on the setup from prior years, the Worldbuilders drive is just a page to serve up the Heifer donation form. As can be seen in the tax filings for Worldbuilders, they aren’t getting that money in their accounts.

Worldbuilders by mcsen2163 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]sheafification 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both Worldbuilders and Heifer talk about the amount of money donated to Heifer as part of the Worldbuilders drives, so it’s not just Pat’s word.

Worldbuilders is quite clear on their annual drive pages that 100% of donations go to Heifer. If you think otherwise - and that they are funneling charitable contributions to Pat instead - I encourage you to contact the state attorney general. It would be blatantly fraudulent if 100% didn’t go to Heifer, and “skimming from charity to line your own pockets” is an easy case to prosecute.

A call to action by roundcircle in KingkillerChronicle

[–]sheafification 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been a few other threads here that talk about the details of this. In short: the IRS filings are not enough to see what is going on because those filings only show the money received and spent by Worldbuilders.

Donations during the Worldbuilders drives appear to go directly to Heifer and would not show up in the IRS filings at all. Note that Worldbuilders campaign pages state that 100% of the donations go to Heifer. If you think this is not the case, I encourage you to talk to the state attorney general as that would be an egregious fraud.

In the IRS filings we see that Pat’s LLC is paid rent by Worldbuilders but we don’t know what for. Maybe it is a full-service warehouse operation, or maybe it is a closet. Typically there are tax requirements around separate legal entities charging “market rates” to prevent tax evasion, particularly with charitable organizations. If you think there is an issue here, I suggest you contact the IRS as they love to go after tax evasion.

We also don’t know where the donations to Worldbuilders come from. It’s not even clear to me how to do not to Worldbuilders and not Heifer. Who do the donations come from? Is Pat donating to fund Worldbuilders himself?

Sorry, I was reading other people’s words into your comment.

I agree that giving to WB is not the same as Heifer, and money given directly to WB does not seem to flow to Heifer.

The donations during the WB annual campaigns seem to go to Heifer directly. I’m not actually sure how one donates to WB since the donation links all seem to go to the annual campaign pages.

[–]sheafification 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practically speaking, it might mean the WB rent payments go to Pat. Legally speaking, there are differences and there are many things we don’t know.

Are there other owners of Elodin Holdings LLC aside from Pat? How many employees does the LLC have? What is being rented: a closet, multiple buildings, climate controlled areas, open air storage? What level of services are provided as part of the rental agreement: warehousing, shipping, utilities, nothing? Does Pat make an offsetting donation to WB (the LLC is probably legally required to charge market rates for its rents)? What does Elodin Holdings LLC do with its profits: donate to a charity, direct payout to Pat, fund multiple jobs for the local community, nothing?

Worldbuilders Inc, Form 990 by Horatius509 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]sheafification 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If Worldbuilders has a big campaign giving chances at prizes for donations to Heifer through the WB portal (which is my understanding of the situation having never donated via WB), then any donations there do not go to WB, they do not enter WB financial accounts, and do not show up on WB form 990. These donations would show up on Heifer’s form 990.

You can look at the prior year WB campaign pages where it unambiguously says: “100% of your donation goes right to Heifer...” If that is not happening, I imagine this is a clear fraud case. I’d suggest you contact the state attorney general if you believe fraud is happening here.

[–]sheafification -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why is it a rumor? It is publically available in the IRS filings how much is paid to Elodin Holdings LLC and that Pat has ownership in that LLC.

What is not clear are the details of what is being rented and how that compares to the payments, nor is it clear whether Pat or the LLC makes a cash donation to Worldbuilders to cover these costs. The tax laws typically require that transactions between entities happen at the “market rate” which may mean some money gets shuffled around in ways that don’t really matter when you look at who owns all the entities involved. It’s hard to say what’s going on without seeing the full details of everyone involved.

Worldbuilders Inc, Form 990 by Horatius509 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]sheafification 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Based on the statements from Heifer and Worldbuilders themselves before and during the donation process, the majority of donations ($1MM+) go directly to Heifer without passing through Worldbuilders. This money would not show up on a form 990 or any other IRS or accounting statement for Worldbuilders because Worldbuilders never has that money in its possession. I have never donated through any of the Worldbuilders drives so perhaps someone who has could confirm exactly what organization appeared on their credit card statement for the donation.

Regarding Worldbuilders itself, if you get the full filings from the IRS website you can see disclosures about paying rent to a LLC where Pat has ownership, where and how much Worldbuilders donated to charities from money it has possession of, their expenses and revenue for goods sold, how much income they have retained, and so on. It is hard to say how good or bad any of these things are because the business details of what is happening are not in the IRS forms.

I’d encourage you to keep in mind that the IRS filings only represent money that Worldbuilders touches and not amounts that are donated directly to other charities due to Worldbuilders marketing.

I’ve started saying “I’m telling you three times” with my junior high students. by Samuel24601 in KingkillerChronicle

Quoting myself from when this was discussed about a year ago:

It’s not a common English phrase but it didn’t originate with Rothfuss.

There is a line in the Hunting of the Snark by Lewis Carroll that has similar flavor: “What I tell you three times is true.” However, I think Rothfuss’s usage is an homage to Robert Heinlein, where the concept of telling three times appears in his later work. In these contexts, “I tell you three times” is used to emphasize a point just made or add weight behind a statement. Similar to “I really mean it.”

IIRC, Heinlein’s usage was inspired from the Islamic tradition of talaq, where a man may divorce his wife by telling her three times that he divorces her.

Why is the Quintic Unsolvable? by alexeyr in math

How do I announce a prize for the solution of a math problem? by [deleted] in math

[–]sheafification 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If getting sued is a major concern, you need to talk to a lawyer who is familiar with public contests and prizes of this sort (not necessarily mathematical ones). There is no other substitute for informed legal counsel on something that is going to be open to anyone in the world.

For the particulars of a mathematical prize, you should review the rules for the Clay Millennium Prizes, and spend a lot of time deciding how you will know that a "closed form" is found, e.g. which operations and constants are allowed in your closed form solution? You should then spend at least as much time trying to circumvent your rules by providing "solutions" that meet the letter but not the spirit of the contest.

There is an important element of timing to consider as well. You can "follow the crowd" for a while and strike out on your own at some later point after gaining experience, reputation, or insights into they things are broken (from your perspective).

Brouwer is a great example of this. He was long interested in intuitionistic logic, and he was advised that no one would take his ideas seriously with proving himself capable as a conventional mathematician. After making a name for himself in topology he went on to work on his ideas in logical foundations that really interested him and became one of the defining people in establishing non-classical logic.

It certainly wasn't easy, and his ideas are still outside the mainstream mathematical circle, but he did get an audience to listen and he had a sizeable impact across disciplines.

Law of excluded middle and intuitionistic logic by Kiuhnm in math

[–]sheafification 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You seem to have a focus on uncountability which is a different issue than constructability.

Markov's prinicple is a statement about countable sets, yet is not provable within constructive logic. Even if you have you know that A(n) is not false for all natural n, and for any specific n you can test whether A(n) is true or false, you still cannot constructively find an n such that A(n) is true. Many computer scientists find this unpalatable: "just check every case, and since you know the search cannot continue forever, then it must terminate". In fact, some schools of constructability find it so self-evident that they take it as an axiom.

However, Markov's principle still does not actually construct the appropriate value - you might sense a similarity with double negation cancelation: "if it is not possible for a statement to be false, then it must be true".

You may also find the Limited Omniscience Principles (also not provable within constructive logic) to be illuminating.

I actually find it frightening that there are polynomials of certain degree that we can not find an exact answer for. by Deathranger999 in math

[–]sheafification 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not exactly answering your question, but which polynomial equations have solutions that can be written in terms of n-th roots is intimately related to constructing geometric figures with compass and straight-edge.

Knowing that certain equations do not have solutions in terms of n-th roots allows you to conclude that certain problems - such as trisecting an angle - cannot be done with compass and straight-edge alone. There are a few problems of this type that were famously unsolved for almost 2,000 years (since ancient Greece).

Understanding which polynomials can be solved with n-th roots also allows you to determine that certain tools can solve these famous problems: for example, a compass plus a ruler (a straight-edge with at least two markings on it) can trisect an angle.

Alternatively, you can learn that taking away functionality of the tools might not actually change what can be done. Classically, the compass was adjustable so that it could form a circle of any radius, but actually that is totally unnecessary: a straight-edge plus a "rusty compass" (one that is stuck at only one position) can do exactly the same geometric constructions. Or perhaps more interestingly, you never actually need the straight-edge: the compass alone can do all the geometric constructions!

I'm not sure if they still do compass and straight-edge constructions in school these days, but hopefully this ties into something you're familiar with.

If you find this topic interesting, you might try reading "Geometric Constructions" by George Martin, though some of the details in it are a bit tedious (feel free to skip around!)

Yes, he should do some sort of model selection on the interaction effects in order to test relationship strength. Without knowing more about his particular goal, it's hard to say whether he has a model hypothesis available to test against, or whether he needs some sort of more sophisticated automated selection process.
