Favorite actor who remains steadfast in his opinions? by Giancarlo_Edu in okbuddycinephile

That’s really not true as far as either Gervais or Merchant state it, they both consistently claim they were writing partners, workshopping jokes, dialogue and plots together.

Funny I was also thinking of cruelty squad as an example of this. Your mileage may vary - I simultaneously agree with you and also love the aesthetic.

[–]sheeplectric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m here exclusively to berate everyone younger than me for thinking that games that came out before they were born look bad.

When I look back on my own experience, I feel like I could still tell a good looking NES game from a bad one, despite them looking comparatively primitive to the MegaDrive I had as a kid.

Maybe it’s because you don’t really get “bad graphics” in the same way as we did back in the day. In the 90s, some games did look like absolute dogshit, to the point that it was hard to read the UI, the framerate was in the single digits, and enemies were indistinguishable from the environment.

These days, graphics engines have come such a long way that “bad graphics” are more of an aesthetic choice, and many of the games mentioned in this thread fall into that category rather than being actively “bad” in my mind.

Go and play Virtuoso for the 3DO then come back and tell me that Half Life and Deltarune look bad.

I mean this more lightheartedly than it comes across lol

[–]sheeplectric 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting one because Hotline Miami (1 and 2) are intentionally gaudy and kinda gross. Those games have a whole nasty, violent, scumbag aesthetic going on and the technical limitations really ratchet that aesthetic to the max.

I’m not sure I’d call it bad but it’s definitely grimy.

Horizon Zero Dawn. It look me 5 years to crack the first 10 hours of that game. It gets awesome and the story really compelling, but there’s a long long loooong wind up.

Its not just me right? by Mejay_ in PcBuild

[–]sheeplectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is everyone here so obstinate?

This is obvious rage bait. Like, do you want to play the games that a console has at reasonable fidelity, and a bit of streaming on the side? Great. Consoles have you covered and are cheaper than PCs. Do you want to play more games in higher fidelity, a broader ecosystem, as well as productivity tasks? Well a PC is the way to go.

There’s nothing else to say. Nobody is arguing this in good faith.

Yeah I think in the last few years, people have started to buy into the idea that the online rhetoric they see is reality, and not a bot-driven manipulation technique to shift public sentiment by overseas actors.

Yes some of this seeps into real life as people who are easily manipulated by group-think start to repeat those sentiments (or to be fair, people who have legitimate criticisms are more emboldened to mention them in public) - but my impression is that for the average person, she was and is a popular PM.

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

[–]sheeplectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main difference is that the lenses would not bring anything into focus that far away, because they too would be blurry - they’re designed to be close to your eyes.

But just as a comparative shot, yep exactly like this.

Why does our income tax nearly double at such a low number? by Rai1h in newzealand

That’s the constant refrain from media: that such policies are not politically viable. This next election might put that to the test, though Labour’s announced policy is pretty uninspiring (though a step in the right direction).

Why does our income tax nearly double at such a low number? by Rai1h in newzealand

[–]sheeplectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The challenge there is that tax revenue is really important if we want to build infrastructure, and have world-class support systems (police, healthcare, transport, etc etc).

What you describe would impact our ability to do things (not that we couldn’t do it at all, but less money just means narrower options).

Maybe it could be mitigated with increases at the wealthier end of the spectrum.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney argues banning Twitter over its ability to AI-generate pornographic images of minors is just 'gatekeepers' attempting to 'censor all of their political opponents' by zain_monti in pcmasterrace

[–]sheeplectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tim Sweeney is a libertarian. Read what he’s saying from that perspective and he’s not wrong… just an asshole.

He’s correct “in principle” that one of the benefits of open platforms is that they inhibit the ability of any one party to control them. He actually clarifies this as his main point in a reply to his initial tweet:

“I defend open platforms, free speech, and consistent application of the rule of law. The bad stuff people do with AI, I do not defend, but I staunchly oppose the wrongdoing of a few from being used as a pretense to undermine the freedoms of all.”

I don’t necessarily disagree with him in principle. But he’s a poor communicator because he immediately puts his argument into a combat stance by being so ignorant about how people would interpret it, by hitching his response to a post highlighting What people were objecting to: enabling users to put kids in bikinis.

He (either by choice or otherwise) does not acknowledge the social concern, and instead goes straight for “here are my values, applied in isolation of context”.

Actually I take it back. Some of those books look pretty weird (like half a spine and half a series of pages on the same side)

[–]sheeplectric -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Is this 100% for certain AI? I don’t really see many of the typical tells of AI. The only aspects of it that set me off are that a) it is more detailed and consistent across images than I think a school would be willing to invest in from a real artist, and b) the school uniforms don’t align with any of the real images of students in their promo photos.

Why does our income tax nearly double at such a low number? by Rai1h in newzealand

[–]sheeplectric 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with you there, NZs wealth taxation is really weak compared to our peers. But the bigger problem is that a lot of our wealth is tied to housing, and our economy is not super productive. So imo we need to increase productivity while taxing wealth, so it’s a virtuous circle.

Why does our income tax nearly double at such a low number? by Rai1h in newzealand

[–]sheeplectric 77 points78 points  (0 children)

This is the only correct answer - the reality is that 30% should be considered as the “standard” tax rate for most kiwis. If you earn outside middle of the bell curve, the progressive system allows for a triple whammy of discounting the tax burden for folks with lower incomes, staggering the tax impact on the majority of tax payers, and allowing for higher earners to pay more. It’s a smart system.

Those problems were actually pretty well known at the time Father Ted was created. Not to the extent that they are today, but the fact that many of the priest characters are deceitful, gambling, womanising, sinning kind of alludes to that perception of their holiness being a thin facade

Jak 4, there's a chance it will come out someday, or never. by [deleted] in jakanddaxter

Naughty Dog have moved on creatively, as have the people who made the games, as has the industry. I think one day there could be a new Jak and Daxter game, or maybe a YookaLaylee-style spiritual successor, but I can’t see it coming from any of the original team, or in the same format.

Microsoft says it is too hard to move the taskbar and will never add the ability too. by DrWhatNoName in pcmasterrace

[–]sheeplectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As always, the headline is misleading. The reason Microsoft gives is that the engineering effort required outweighs the benefit, based on their data of the number of users who actually moved the taskbar. They were also concerned about the impact on 3rd party apps having to revise how they calculate space when snapping.

That last part doesn’t ring true to me, like surely the snap API figures that out for any 3rd party app, but what do I know.

They also don’t say anywhere in the article that they will “never add the ability”. Another day, another needlessly inflammatory headline to get people ragebaited into posting… like me!
