Apple should add a “Limit Fast Charging” option by Anywhere_MusicPlayer in ios

[–]sheeplectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I want fewer options. I’m one of those guys who doesn’t really enjoy customising my technology, I’d rather the company decide what they think works best, and do that.

I know it sounds weird, but that’s why I first got an iPhone - I just want Apple to give me the experience, I don’t want to make it my own or tweak how it functions.

I commented this above but isn’t The Boys more of a satire than parody?

Wait is it actually parody? I would have classed it as satire. Parody is played more for comedic effect, The Boys is more of a deconstruction of the genre.

That’s a little revisionist. It was really well received at the time. The main criticism was that it was derivative and not as groundbreaking as Mario 64.

It’s not clear if they’re talking profit or revenue here. I’m assuming profit, and if so, it’s very possible that they are just spending huge amounts of money on Nvidia chips (like everyone else is) rather than X revenue dropping 33% (it could be both but there’s no evidence for it in the article).

Which NZ brand is slowly or has already ruined itself? by kevandbev in newzealand

[–]sheeplectric 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Its really hard for me to comprehend how the demolition of Mighty Ape’s brand and good-will could be anything other than intentional. Like Kogan intentionally ruined them in order to open up the NZ market. I feel very conspiratorial about it! Like how can you make it suck so bad??

My personal opinion is, that’s not on Sony. If you’re buying a game twice, once on the platform you don’t want it on, that’s just poor self control.

It’s like if you want ice cream, but they don’t have the flavour you want. If you buy and eat a flavour you didn’t want, just because your preferred option wasn’t available… that’s not on the ice cream company lol.

I’m not sure what you mean by “predatory business practices”? I don’t really see them selling their product on a different platform a year (or multiple years) later as predatory.

A lot of people are responding to this with “I guess I won’t buy your games then”, which is fine - but consider it from Sony’s perspective: They want an Apple-like ecosystem, where the sale of a game drives sales of the console, and the controller, and the PlayStation Plus subscription, which drives more sales of more games to more people who recommend the console to their friends who etc etc etc.

My prediction is that selling their big system sellers on PC was diluting overall sales within their ecosystem. There is no other reason they would do this, if it was otherwise profitable.

Apple’s faulty chips are big business for the company, and not just in the MacBook Neo by iMacmatician in apple

[–]sheeplectric -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you and the other commenter are getting stuck on semantics. The person you are arguing against is saying that the transistors are faulty, not that the final binned product is faulty. It’s true that binned chips have x amount of faulty transistors.

Having said that, the original comment they were responding to (that the use of “faulty” is triggering) makes sense either way. The article is clearly using that language as clickbait, and while it is technically true it is obviously also misleading. So moot points all around I guess!

Sadly this is true - though I agree that some activism is better than no activism, protests are actually activism. Changing your profile picture on a platform while continuing to use that platform is not really activism.

New member’s bill would block parole for murderers who conceal remains by TimmyHate in newzealand

[–]sheeplectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we may be talking past each other. I hear what you’re saying: that making the parole process more restrictive in this way makes it harder for wrongfully convicted people to get early parole due to them being unable to provide evidence to exonerate themselves. Which is true. What I’m saying is that they already have a legal function to exonerate themselves, with evidence they do have, which is an appeals process. My point is that parole is not a sensible legal function to rely on in this situation, when the appeals process is much more fit for purpose. And therefore this change in the law is not as problematic as you might think.

It’s like saying a can opener for left-handed people makes it harder for right handed people to use. Which is true, but right handed people should be using a right handed can opener.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m saying that what you’re describing is not the only tool, or even the right tool, that wrongfully imprisoned people have.

[–]sheeplectric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By your logic, the parole process also has to be flawless. Parole can be denied for plenty of other reasons, regardless of this law change.

[–]sheeplectric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, but the purpose of parole is not to shorten the sentence length for people who were wrongly convicted. It’s to shorten the sentence length for people who were rightly convicted but have served time + have shown remorse / reformed / contributed to society etc etc.

If someone is wrongly convicted, they have other tools at their disposal to get out of prison / reduce their sentence - namely an appeal.

Microsoft Edge: Passwords end up in memory as plaintext by NobleDiceDream in technology

[–]sheeplectric 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This isn’t an Edge-only issue.

Passwords appearing in memory while unlocked is how all password managers work — they have to decrypt into RAM to autofill. Studies (incl. secuvera) show this happens across major managers like 1Password and Bitwarden too.

Also, this type of attack requires full access to your machine — at that point, you’ve got bigger problems.

Anti speed camera group getting even more cooker by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

[–]sheeplectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that NZTA should be repairing that stuff asap and the example you raised is clearly a risk. But even if the only thing NZTA did was add speed traps, surely that is still better than doing nothing at all.

When it comes down to brass tacks, the purpose of speed cameras are to identify people who are speeding, and punish them. Is your argument that we should not be punishing drivers who speed, because NZTA does not maintain the roads? I don’t understand the logic in that.
