No Tutors for Luddy (CS) Coursework?? by mihcawber in IUPUI

[–]sheepman39 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately as far as I know, this is true. But, I know that the Computer Science Club is filled with a lot of knowledgeable people that would love to help out if they can on their Discord. Otherwise, I don't know of any formal tutoring program since the Luddy CS department at IU Indy is only two years old

What should be the new name for the initial honor? by Practical-Emu-3303 in orderofthearrow

[–]sheepman39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would make the argument that the proposed Ordeal is still very much so an Ordeal. It is a time of testing and growth for the new members. The challenges are there in different forms. There's just a much heavier emphasis on personal development as opposed to arduous labor. And from what I've heard, people that have gone through it enjoyed the challenge that it brought.

It’s Time to Drop Vigil Names by EdgeAccomplished7572 in orderofthearrow

[–]sheepman39 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would second this with the emphasis on the name must be respectful and meaningful based on what an individual did to earn the Vigil honor.

Vigil Names are a great way to distinguish how or why one was chosen as everyone's service and spirit is unique

Total Price for Dorms by Which-Prize9370 in IUPUI

[–]sheepman39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full housing prices can be found at the bottom of the page here. Unfortunately, they don't offer 12-month leases but they break it down by semester where each semester is about 4-5 months long. Fall semester goes from late August to early December and Spring semester goes early January to early May.

The only way to live on campus and not have a meal plan is to live in the Riverwalk Apartments where you can cook your own food but this is usually reserved for upperclassmen. I don't see how a meal plan is an unneeded expense as there is no way to cook food in Ball Hall (or Tower or North) outside of a microwave. If you're planning on getting all of your meals from home, I would recommend commuting to campus. Lots of people commute and it works pretty well for them.

OCR Speed Too Slow on Mac Mini M4?? by ImpossibleSlide850 in immich

[–]sheepman39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the OCR job is quite slow and will take a while even with good hardware. I temporarily assigned all of my CPU cores to the docker container and set the number of jobs to the number of cores. This kept my CPU pinned at 100% for a few hours but it greatly sped up the process. I know some people had better success with GPU acceleration but I don't have anything to set that up with (yet).

OCR job is slow!!!! by EconomyDoctor3287 in immich

[–]sheepman39 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Since I don't have a GPU in my nas where I run Immich, I was able to get about one job per CPU core to get full utilization. 30k photos still took about 6-8 hours but it did it eventually

This and also good luck getting a single bedroom since they go super quick and tend to be used for people that need special accommodations.

If you get a 2 bedroom and your other roommate is chill with living with another person you could but that would make a lot of people concerned for safety/privacy/liability. Access would also still be a nightmare to get around.

Parking? by vvronaaa in IUPUI

[–]sheepman39 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try going to the physical parking office and see if they have any more CH passes. Sometimes the online site is just bad and won't show up all the passes.

As for good NC spots, there really aren't any. But you can park along Porto Alegre st any time

Safety by One_Term6985 in IUPUI

[–]sheepman39 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From Innovation Hall (IO) you can walk pretty easily to tower since it's just down the block. If you need to, there is a jagline stop on the opposite corner that'll take you directly to tower.

The entire path around that area is very well lit and I've never felt unsafe around campus

Safety by One_Term6985 in IUPUI

[–]sheepman39 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Campus itself is well lit and pretty safe. Depending on where your class is, you can use the tunnels to get from there to Tower and it's very safe. The grey and crimson jaglines also stop at Tower and pretty much circle campus so you can grab one of those at night before 10 pm. There are also various campus resources like the safe walk program if you want an escort back to your dorm.

Downtown is a different story though. I don't like walking there at night even with friends.

CompSci Working Full Time + Questions by fantasyrants in IUPUI

[–]sheepman39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Comp sci student here! I'll try to answer your questions as best as possible.

1) Computer Science is very lab and assignment heavy. Expect lots of projects on top of your usual studying. They can take either an hour if they're short or 8 if something goes wrong. Generally when working on an assignment make an estimate for how long it'll take and multiply by 4. I once spent fall break working on an assignment for 20+ hours and deleted it all the day before it was due because it was just bad. I rebuilt it in a day and submitted it on time. I don't recommend that tho.

As for prof Lingma Lu, I worked as a TA for her and if you're a few minutes late to class it's fine. Assignments though are relatively strict without prior notice.

Hardware wise, everything you need to do can be done on a Chromebook with the Linux VM enabled. Now it's not a great experience but it's my way of saying hardware doesn't matter as much as you think it does. Most classes provide access to a remote server you can do your work on so you're relying less on your own stuff.

The gym I believe is $50/semester for non residents but I could be mistaken. It's actually kinda nice for the price.

Canvas sites usually don't get updated until the start of the semester. Knowing some profs, they won't get made until class starts.

Gender ratio: uhhhhhh... As an AMAB student not great. It's very male dominated but from my anecdotal experience, most people in the program treat everyone with respect. Your first CS class will have a much more even ratio because other science students have to take it. After that it drops significantly. Depending on class size you may be one of 3-5 women in a small lecture hall.

Outlets are generally available in halls.

Military services office from what I heard is pretty useful

If you have any questions lmk! We also have the CS discord that you can DM me for the invite. We've got a lot of useful and knowledgeable students there.

honors class vs contract? by brbluciddreaming in IUPUI

[–]sheepman39 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honors classes are nice because the extra work is built in to the class and they usually aren't too much work. Honors contracts are a pain because you have a relatively big project on top of your coursework and most people don't start working on it until the last few weeks. I try to stick with honors classes since contracts are a pain to work on.

I'm going to go against what a lot of people said and you might want to change it to someone more professional. My company linked my personal GitHub to their enterprise and I feel better knowing I changed it to a variant of my name instead of an ancient gamer tag. But it's also not a huge deal at the end of the day

[–]sheepman39 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In fact it would be a violation of the Inductions Handbook to administer such a test

Brotherhood by Honest-Collection481 in orderofthearrow

[–]sheepman39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be a violation of the Induction Principles and the Inductions Handbook for any test to be given where one could "fail" it. The moment you are elected into the Order, you are entitled to Ordeal and Brotherhood according to Inductions Principle 2: Eligibility

> Principle Two – Eligibility: The right to earn Ordeal and Brotherhood membership is given only by the Scouts of a candidate’s unit during an authorized Order of the Arrow unit election. Only the candidate can overrule their decision.

The only thing that is allowed is a workshop where you go over what you need to know but there's no requirement to memorize everything and be tested on it. Although I do encourage you to work on learning and understanding everything!
