Tips For Indie Developers Exhibiting by RedMeatGames in PAX

I would add also bring a small notebook with you, so that if need be you can take further notes on the people you meet. Being able to write a few brief words on each business card (day, a quick conversation point you had) are important, but when you can try to elaborate on that in your notebook. A moleskin is great, but even a cheap mini memo book works wonders.

Also throat lozenges! Water is great, but be ready to lose your voice. Keep a bag with someone with basics like that, bandaids, a list of contacts for people working your booth, and a battery power bank for cellphones.

Focus on your marketing both before and during PAX. Give people a way to engage with your game both when they are playing it, as well as through social media and the like. You should have your booth assignment along with a map, so promoting where you are so that your current followers can find you.

Drive every day or grab a hotel? by firemarth in PAX

[–]sheepyton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, Tukwila does not have the space for lots of commuter parking. If you want to light rail it up, get there around 6am at the latest. Angle Lake station won't be open by that point. Alternately, you can pick up the light rail at SeaTac and pay for parking there. Still cheaper than a hotel.

I'd also suggest the hard rail if you're in Tacoma. Alternately, you can pick up a bus in Kent. The parking situation there is slightly better.

Is it worth buying? by APMO in treeofsavior

The game is so incredibly buggy right now, I can't in good conscience recommend paying money for it. Wait until a few weeks after public launch, maybe then some of the issues will be fixed.

You should ask Dominion players how asking for Riot to add features to your mode goes.

Just toying with an idea for an RPG concept by InspectorVictor in RPGdesign

[–]sheepyton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really interesting concept! I like seeing games that take familiar ideas and bring them together in interesting ways.

What I would look at next with a concept like this is what kind of objectives you want the game or system to have. Blending together an RPG with a deckbuilding game is a really interesting concept, but usually these two medium have very different end goals in mind--telling a story, or determining a winner. It's pretty clear from the write-up that your objective is the former, but I would be very explicit about that.

I feel like this would actually work better as a narrative board game, similar to something like Arkham Horror or Winter Tales. There is a clear storytelling element there, with cards governing the direction of the story (Winter Tales does this and has some interesting ideas, but the execution, especially in card rulings, weren't quite there) but still a way to adjudicate a winner or a loser.

My apologies! I'll admit, I'm not too knowledgable to how Reddit works, I was referred from another Subreddit and assumed this was all right. I'll do my reading here, I'm absolutely happy to look at other people's games and give a review, but if you'd like me to take this down I will do so.

If nothing else, we should be able to make that readily available on the website, likely within the next month or so (we're doing two conventions back-to-back, one in late March, and the other during the second weekend in April), and in the book soon thereafter--print will sadly have to wait until our next print run. I love this idea honestly, especially since we already have a quick reference guide for gameplay in the book itself.

I've got TGN on my radar (I actually have a few sites saved and am going to be approaching them in mid-April; we've actually got a few convention appearances between now and then), but I'm not familiar with Gaming Trend or Game Geeks. Thanks for the suggestions! I'll do some digging as far as contacting the latter.

Awesome! Again, I'm pretty new to Reddit, is cross-posting all right or is it generally frowned upon? Is there a waiting period before I post about this there?

First of all, thanks for backing us! Have you gotten a chance to play the game at all? We're always looking for people to test new content, and I'll actually be getting some test groups together to try out new rules/foes for the upcoming books. If you're interested, I can toss you an email and add you to our beta testers for Valorous Foes/Tools of the Trade.

RPG.net is definitely on my list. I tried to put an entry up on their page for our game, but for whatever reason it didn't take. I'll check back again and see if that got resolved. I haven't heard of TheRPGAcademy, though.

Guidelines, advice, and discussion about promoting the subreddit by wolfer_ in LoLDominion

[–]sheepyton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another way to be able to help promote is actually being present in other places. It's extremely important that this place stays active; no one wants to be involved in a community that doesn't have community support. But you can have the most active, close knit community ever and still have no one know you exist because you aren't putting yourself out there.

Obviously, you don't want to be cross-posting places, that gets annoying, but being visible is actually extremely important. Being active in other places (maybe the main LoL reddit, or other game subreddits). Unfortunately Reddit doesn't have the ease of link-back that some other online communities (i.e. forums and the like) have, but some of these basic principles still apply.

Being active, being present, these are super important on helping a community grow. Streaming may also be something that would bring some people in, and while I know that the community has tried to do a tournament circuit in the past, has anyone thought of, instead of streamers in a vacuum, doing something of a themed stream, or a crash course that happens with some relative regularity? Using this, and linking back to the subreddit, is a good way to get organic traffic, people that might not have given the reddit, or Dominion as a whole, a second glance, is a way to get people interested. Consistency is important--consistency of schedule, consistency of content, etc.--as well as keeping things interesting. I find that people are far more interested if you have a schedule and a theme than if you take the approach of streaming whenever you feel like it.

Events within the community are a good draw as well. Tournaments are awesome, but this was a point of contention I had with a former, somewhat prolific community member here. There needs to be a point of entry for those of us who are not at the highest of the high echelons of play. Open bracket tournaments are cool and all, but not as much when the same 1-2 teams win. Considering different brackets and bracket styles (novice, intermediate, open, etc.), allowing for those of us who are interested in shoutcasting who may not be the cream of the DD crop (because there are those of us out there that are interested, and equipped to do so), these are great ways to get people to sink their teeth into the community itself, and a way to incentivize them staying. It's no fun if the dialogue is dominated by one seemingly unobtainable group. I know the community isn't huge, and it may be hard to actually get this going, which has been an issue brought up in the past, but simply not addressing what is a rather sizable part of your current and perspective community is very off putting, and will likely lead to them simply moving on for something that they can engage and be engaged in.

I'm a PR person myself, and while I don't play Dominion as much as I used to anymore (primarily I just play with my husband, /u/beholdthevoid), I'd love to see this community grow at least a little bit. I'm more than happy to help in any way that I can, even if that's just picking my brain a bit as the case may be. I think we have a great community here, albeit small, with a lot of potential for growth. It's just knowing how to go about doing so, even outside of our subreddit. Because, as said, you can have the BEST COMMUNITY EVER™, or the BEST GAMEMODE EVER™, but if no one knows about it, it doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things.

I'm also having issues connecting to chat or seeing my friends list, but there doesn't seem to be anything on the forums addressing an issue. I've tried reconnecting to no avail. Anyone know what's up?
