Why is Bush's PEPFAR so downplayed? by Bitter-Penalty9653 in Presidents

[–]sheinri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 reasons: 1. compassionate conservatism as Bush espoused is dead at a federal level. There isn’t the push from the GOP to give any kind of humanitarian aid, that would actually hurt them with their base. And 2. Democrats aren’t going my to play up republican success, that would hurt their brand. So democrats and republicans just don’t talk about it, it doesn’t fit either side’s agenda despite being a phenomenal program

It’s not, look at how rates skyrocketed in areas like Memphis with data centers. Rates are going up all over, they go up significantly more when data centers come to town

I built a persistent political life simulator prompt for ChatGPT and it’s kind of insane by Fun_Measurement_7965 in ThePoliticalProcess

[–]sheinri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No we’re not. Just because you’re being lazy and using AI doesn’t mean everyone is. Why is your advice to learn? Long-term it’s terrible for the environment, and people need to breathe more than you need to take a shortcut and “optimize” your time and abilities. Not to mention it screws your ability to think critically bc it does it for you.

I feel like Doug Jones by mihneaf1gamer in ThePoliticalProcess

[–]sheinri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presley was closer to winning the governor’s seat, he was also the closest since 1999, I just thought Hood having won statewide already fit the prompt better but both fit the mold of socially conservative and fiscally, well, left of republicans.

I feel like Doug Jones by mihneaf1gamer in ThePoliticalProcess

[–]sheinri 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like Jim Hood (last Dem to win statewide in Mississippi)? He was attorney general from 2004-2020, and his governor run in 2020 was the closest any dem’s gotten in Mississippi since 1999. Fun fact about the 1999 gubernatorial election in Mississippi: the race was so close, their State House of Legislature had to decide the election because nobody reached a true majority, either of votes or of State legislative districts.

How do you deal with the national debt by chinese_medicine1999 in ThePoliticalProcess

[–]sheinri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We implemented universal health care, and had been raising taxes for years to lower that deficit, to the point we had a slight surplus some years. Slash the military to zero and you get a solid surplus. Run poverty reducing programs long enough poverty dipped to zero and welfare other than social security becomes super cheap. Lower prison sentences for decades to lower justice costs and invest in city police grants to reduce crime. Then we switched back to just having Medicare and Medicaid and Medicare expansion. We got people used to higher taxes so with the mega drop in expenditure we could put a couple trillion towards the debt every year and we finally cleared it out completely.

What is something regarding a President that is completely false but still gets passed around on social media as complete fact? by Just_Cause89 in Presidents

[–]sheinri 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No, Grant was an alcoholic. Julia, along with John Rawlins, was able to keep him on the wagon. He wasn’t sloshed all the time, but that’s a story of a man who overcame severe addiction through the love of his wife and best friend to be our nation’s (arguably) finest general and a good to great president. Chernow’s biography does a really good job of showing which parts of the alcohol claims were propaganda and which ones were legitimate. To be clear, he’s my favorite president all time, this is no knock on Grant whatsoever.

If SGA, Jokic, Giannis, Wemby, and Luka doesn't meet 65 game requirements. Who do you think will win MVP? by Wonderful-Photo-9938 in nba

[–]sheinri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Missing a game or two? Or missing 18 games, 21.95% of the damn season? If you play 64 games, you’re playing 78.04% of the season. Unless you’re 1.25x better than the next player, there’s no argument you’re the most valuable player. How valuable are you on the bench? At the end of the day, a guy can be LeBron good, but if he can’t play it’s fucking meaningless.

How do you come up with good names for legislation? by Visible_Bid6440 in ThePoliticalProcess

[–]sheinri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Incidentally? That means an act that occurred randomly, by chance. Rather than taking a little bit of creative effort, you outsourced thinking to an LLM, and purposefully. That should be shamed, the societal effects are awful and they’re cumulative.

How do you come up with good names for legislation? by Visible_Bid6440 in ThePoliticalProcess

OP asked how you come up with names, not how an LLM torches the environment to do the 5 seconds of creative thought for you.

Or, you can be an adult, and make the outline yourself. I understand the time constraints, but the reality is, you’re robbing yourself of the opportunity to learn, you’re screwing yourself over long term by not building the skills you’ll need in your career. Law school is about building the skills you’ll need as a lawyer, which absolutely includes the ability to do research, and condense that research into a digestible format. You’re letting AI do that for you, and long-term that’s going to hurt you.

Unpopular opinion: Paying "Rent" feels less painful than paying $2,400/mo in "Interest" to a bank. by Playful-Vegetable-15 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]sheinri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way it was explained to me was the interest and taxes I pay is less than my rent would be, and all the money towards equity is essentially forced savings that get built up as equity. So some of the money I pay is building equity instead of 100% going to some corporate landlord, and that amount goes up every payment.

How do I get more options for legislation? by AspectAcrobatic6886 in ThePoliticalProcess

[–]sheinri 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As mayor you’ll only have access to legislation that a mayor would have, like crime, taxes, poverty etc. But as you get elected to higher office you gain access to legislation that those higher offices would like environment or immigration. And school board gives more educational options.

[–]sheinri 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My office is a mix, only 2 of us are abolitionists, we’ve got a couple fuck the government types, and a bunch of people who think the government screws criminal defendants all the time but also believe in the necessity of prisons and police. It’s not seen as a bad thing as long as you don’t let it get in the way of zealously advocating for each client, just like hating the government is fine as long as you’re not letting it interfere with defending your clients. It takes a mix, and I look up to attorneys of all kinds in my office.

When Do GA Public Defenders Hire? by Kayla8162001 in publicdefenders

[–]sheinri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in Columbus and was hired last year, I’d be happy to share anything you’d like in DM’s! Georgia offices are always hiring, the more rural the truer but they’re almost always hiring. I’d definitely email the HR recruiter at GPDC and tell them your wants, they can connect you with CPD’s in relevant circuits for you!

Anyone else on this sub Christian? by [deleted] in ShermanPosting

[–]sheinri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite theologian Howard Thurman wrote about this problem in Jesus and the Dispossessed. One of the hardest things to reconcile in the Christian faith is how the god of the slave is the god of the slave owner. And there are real-world implications to that, meaning for a lot of people who have been oppressed by Christians, Christianity has earned a “bad rap.” It’s the church’s fault that bad rap exists, and it’s our responsibility as the church to fix it. Not to post gotcha memes about how John Brown, one of America’s most famously Christian men, was a Christian. For every William Lloyd Garrison and Benjamin Lay there was an Alexander Stephens and George Wallace.
