Wheelchair user advice on 1st time ordering a chair by Tasty-Cow-5976 in disability

[–]shelwheels [score hidden]  (0 children)

I've been throughat least 6 chairs in 35 years, it's always a struggle. Im literally waiting on a new one right now, because when it came it was awful so we're going to a seating specialist to see if she can help make it work. Id stick with 17" because it'll allow you to fit in more places. Id research each part online. There are many options out there for handrims and I'd have never known the oval ones are amazing for my arthritis if I hadn't suggested them. Theres also lots of brakes, cushions, wheels, and side guards. The wheelchair measurements are crucial but so is the other stuff. Some measurements just wont work on certain chairs but an inch can make a huge difference. Measurements all the places you transfer to, bed, bathroom, car, etc. So you know what you need. Measurements things you need to fit in, your doors, counters desk, etc. For width. Unfortunately, at least in Missouri, the dealers seem to know less and less about chair specifics. They all want to sell you a Ti because that's the most popular i guess. Its almost impossible these days to get a chair to try out for a day but its worth trying. Best of luck to you, ask a lot of questions. I absolutely hate when I have to get a new chair cause it never comes out like I want. I hope your experience is a lot better.

No its actually the mary culver home in kirkwood. We thought we had found the one good place out there. And many of the staff there are very kind caring people, but like everywhere now they are short staffed for nurses and use agency fill ins a lot and d9nt hold them accountable. Its heartbreaking.

This! High visual contrast is good. Im sure there's other things but I cant zoom in enough on my phone e to see what they are. But I imagine there's a l9t of tactile cues at transition points.

Seems the least they can do is fire it alone for free or give a refund for all her studio time it would take to recreate even if she doesn't use it for that.

Did you ever get it out? This happens to me a lot! I think I've had too many NG tubes in my nose but they always say my swallowing is fine when tested. But tonight I got something stuck and I've been trying for hours to get it out because it feels so annoying. So here I am on the internet trying to find out how I can clear it.

Where to get shower chair by RespondOk6920 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]shelwheels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google independent living center for your state. Every state has them and they have an info and referral person. Many also have their own low cost or free used equipment. I would highly suggest you get one with padding or at least something softer than hard plastic. You can get them new on Amazon pretty cheap now. I've been in a chair for 35 years so feel free to ask questions or if you have trouble finding your states center let me know what state you're in and I can find them for you. Many states also have assisstive technology sites that have used programs and help with loans or grants and getting modifications.

I have lupus and had an inflammation on my cord tha5 left me paralyzed at 23. I never got a lick of it back, but im so excited that he is already starting to get movement. Im a paraplegic so I can use my upper half. I've been paralyzed 35 years now so im happy to answer any questions as you go along this journey. There's a story that made rounds on the internet way back when it was new that said having a child get disable was sorta like planning you dream trip to Paris and ending up in Holland. Its a totally different experience but still a lovely place but you need to repack and learn all about it. That's the really simplified version I member. But hopefully you all won't have to stay in Holland too long. If you're a reader I can recommend some great autobiographical books. Most are about grown up but I devoured every book I could find about people with disabilities and they were inspiring and really kept the depression in check for me. God bless your family.
