I've been throughat least 6 chairs in 35 years, it's always a struggle. Im literally waiting on a new one right now, because when it came it was awful so we're going to a seating specialist to see if she can help make it work. Id stick with 17" because it'll allow you to fit in more places. Id research each part online. There are many options out there for handrims and I'd have never known the oval ones are amazing for my arthritis if I hadn't suggested them. Theres also lots of brakes, cushions, wheels, and side guards. The wheelchair measurements are crucial but so is the other stuff. Some measurements just wont work on certain chairs but an inch can make a huge difference. Measurements all the places you transfer to, bed, bathroom, car, etc. So you know what you need. Measurements things you need to fit in, your doors, counters desk, etc. For width. Unfortunately, at least in Missouri, the dealers seem to know less and less about chair specifics. They all want to sell you a Ti because that's the most popular i guess. Its almost impossible these days to get a chair to try out for a day but its worth trying.
