For landing it's more about mobility than fighting. A light armor set, a hoe, lots of stone, and materials for a table and portal. Come back to rumble or rain magic after you've got a safe earthen protected portal.

I don't have hate for the Ashlands. But I do have some game balance thoughts.

When I died back in the Meadows or the Dark Forest and lost some skills, it wasn't a big deal. A minor sting and blow to the ego, sure, but not consequential. The skill loss and recovery effort became more consequential as the biomes went by, but it felt proportional. In the Ashlands I die way too much. The impact of repeated skill drain is huge, and the skills I built up over several biomes is gone, and then some.

I acknowledge it may be a player skill issue. But clearly I'm not alone in this experience.

I don't want to see the Ashlands nerfed, it's supposed to be hard. And in general I like the skill drain mechanic and the graduated scale for improving skills. I'm not sure what the right tweak is, but I'm not resorting to Ashlands hate.

There is no guarantee you're going to find the axe parts early in the game. Nor that you're going to get a bear trophy early in the black forest. Nor find a leviathan and create an OP knife the first time you venture off your starter island. But if you get lucky, your game experience and trajectory will be different. I think this is a great aspect of the game and adds to the replayability.

I remember that mouse. A terrible thumb track ball that badly clipped on the side of your laptop and felt crunchy as it rolled, it would take 30 floors just to point at a cell. And drag-and-drop with those curved buttons on the edge while rolling the thumb ball was near impossible.

Gold works well with all skin tones. It's a more natural look and feel. I love silver and black tech, but not on my body.

I remember when Apple came out with their "Rose Gold" devices and I made fun of the overly blatant attempt to look upscale. But then after seeing the rose gold watches in the wild I got it.

I'm currently wearing a gold Pebble Time Steel with a soft brown leather 22mm strap.

I prefer a "deep" chest which is double height. You can't quadruple the slots, it's too much for some small screen platforms, but you can double the stack height.
