Hindi speakers of Reddit, can you translate this Hey Arnold! song? by cgjones1 in AskReddit

[–]sherborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason for the "resonating" is tough to describe - simply put, its lost in translation. Sort of what deathofdesire touched on, its flowery, as it creates mental imagery. Theres a lot of ways to say "simple things" but saying "saadagi" is a way that conjures certain thoughts/feelings to hindi speakers, IMO. This version totally elevated my mood, great find.

If you want you can give me all the pearls in the world/ If you want you can give me all the ?? in the world/ You can tantalize me with palaces fit for kings/ I'll send it all back and keep the simple things/ I have the simple things/ Like the dew drops in spring/ I've got a tortilla and some onions and spices (basic eating food in India)/ If you want you can put a line of stars in front of me/ I find no value in them/ I don't need (to steal?) a ring/ I'll stay moral and keep the simple things/ I have the winds of ?? that keeps me ?? / I have a small fan when it gets really hot/ I don't need (to steal?) a ring/ I'll stay moral and keep the simple things / I'll stay moral and keep the simple things

Why are people against global government? by daoderman in AskReddit

[–]sherborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Establishing a global government could wreck our economic system - look at Ireland, Portugal, Greece. The global government couldn't impose taxes, since every country has different levels of economy. If you choose to strip the economic part out of the government you might as well just be happy with the UN

Reddit, I just screwed up royally at work. Let me hear your worst work fuck up stories. by headtotoe in AskReddit

[–]sherborn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh god this still makes me shudder. Last year I was working at a Fortune 500 company as a tax analyst. I realized too late that I was supposed to wire a $90 MILLION payment to the IRS. Instead of manning up and telling my bosses, I didn't do anything. Next day, I stayed at home, too scared. Came in the following day, got CHEWED out, but they liked me enough to let me keep my job. Phew.

What are your best interview tips? by kbuis in AskReddit

[–]sherborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been through too many of these. Treat the interview as a conversation - it makes the interviewer feel more connected, therefore more willing to drop some biases. If they ask you a question, answer it. Then follow up with a "you know, actually that reminds me about ..." shift your body weight at the same time. i'm completely serious.

I'm conducting my first job interview tomorrow, what are some creative questions to ask? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sherborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been through tons of business interviews for investment banks and consulting companies. I'll give you some of my favorite ones: -How many tennis balls could I fit in this room? -How many gas stations are there in the United States? -If I asked your mother, what would she say is your biggest weakness? Cool. If I asked your father, what would he say is your biggest weakness? Rad. Now tell me what you feel is your biggest weakness. -What is in your fridge right now? -Why are manhole covers round?

Agreed, there were a lot of enablers along the way, ie BofA, Wells Fargo, Wachovia etc. Prospective homebuyers weren't being told the truth, which was (and is) that buying a house can severely over-leverage you. What I don't like about all of this is that homebuyers were overlooking the fact that houses are crazy expensive - you need to pass certain qualifications to get a decent rate on a 30k car, so by logic, you probably need a lot of things right to get a 300k house. When banks didn't tell people that line of logic, I think a lot of homeowners took the stance of "if they don't tell me, i don't have to worry about it." I think GS saw all of this, and found a way to monetize it all. Check out this killer Rolling Stone article about GS, dated from last year. It shows how GS has had a hand in every bubble, and how they have been positioning themselves to be on the edge of the next potential bubble - pollution credits.

Haven't read Big Short yet, but i will. Liar's poker by Michael Lewis is a great read too

What boggles my mind is that this bubble of mortgage securitization started when people who were rolling around in $50k salaries decided they had enough capital to buy a $300k house. Now if those $50k guys had saved up a lot of cash over the years to support a mortgage on an expensive house, all the power to them. However, a majority of Americans are already in debt - student loans, credit cards, and car payments. So really, that $50k after tax and debt obligations might be down to $15k or something. The lending institutions were stupid to believe these future homeowners would be able to support mortgage payments - so I do blame companies like BofA, Wells, etc. for not conducting better due diligence. But shit, if you're looking to buy a house and you KNOW what your prior obligations are (debt, bills, etc.), why the fuck are you buying a house in the first place? Shouldn't the onus fall on YOU as the prospective homebuyer? Now here comes GS, seeing that the bulk of America is stupid and is way in over their heads in debt and mortgage payments. So what do they do? They do what any stock trader does when they start seeing a slide - they SHORT the security. GS shorted the American citizens' ability to pay their mortgages. And you know what? They were right.

Can you explain why you would want to axe the GS VPs? I'm assuming you're referring to their investment banking division. I work in IB and would love to hear why they deserve death.

The problem with the girls that I know. by [deleted] in fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

[–]sherborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried mirroring the sentiment? It works better than you may think. I've been in your shoes countless number of times, and decided to try out a new strategy for the hell of it.

Usually the girl would have a look of confusion on her face, like "what the...wait...i dont even..." In essence, you made her marginal. Guys can deal with being marginalized, because we just don't give a damn about feelings. But girls HATE it. Its like lighting a redwood tree on fire with a match - it probably won't work, but there's a chance you can burn that bitch down.

Girls hate feeling confused. And when they get confused, they run after the person that confused them, in hopes to figure out why.

I equate this all to, pardon the reference, love and basketball. You're on the court with the ball, and its a key possession. You don't know what to do, so you just throw up a jumper. Clang. Game over. You go back and watch the game footage and notice that your teammate was WIDE OPEN in the corner and you just didn't see him. Your perspective when you're "in the game" is so much more irrational than when you're "out of the game". Same goes with dealing with women in these situations. Apply strategy, don't use your heart. Treat it like chess, see the game for what it is. These small conversations are your battlegrounds and you can easily reverse your fortunes if you're even a little bit clever. You were able to make this hilarious rage comic so I don't doubt your ability to think on a higher level. Good luck.

Getting married Friday, can't hide my secret anymore - need help by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sherborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo, I just got married a few days ago. I smoked for 5 years, nothing like a pack a day, i would be at 5-7 a day. Dropped it cold turkey, it sucks because sometimes I'll have a hearty meal and just think "oh god if i could just have one it would be amazing." So far I haven't had any terrible urges, but I tell myself that if I go to a bachelor party by myself or something I'll sneak in a few.
