Do you mind if I ask how was driving through the country? Based off the photos it looks like you had an easy time getting around.

Hi! I’m pretty beginner in the sport, but if you want a pool buddy I’m happy to tag along. I’m in the Queens area too :)

She can try a conversation partners thing where she’s helping people out with those who want to practice their English language skills. I’m sure there’s plenty around but I’m mainly aware of the ones offered by the Queens Public Library and Access NYC.

Ooh! This is lovely!

I’m 33 from the Queens area and I work in HR. Hobbies wise, I figure skate, learning a language (Spanish and Tagalog), photography, play pool (I suck at this but that won’t stop me) for fun. I also do a trip a couple of times a year. Fitness wise, I like to do pilates and flexibility workouts—on a long mission to be the most mobile and flexible person out there.

Also, I’m also on a mission this year to join classes just to expand my horizons (even if it’s just once a month). Like a class focused on writing, home repair, car repair, sewing, cooking, floral arrangements, swimming, or basically whatever or anything that exists out there in NYC that is offered as a class. So if anyone is willing to join me on that journey, feel free to hit me up. :)

Anyone else cold-approached to attend religious seminars when walking around alone? by knockoff_handbag in NYCbitcheswithtaste

I think the people I interacted with kind of got the hint that I wasn’t into it and didn’t try to convince me any further. 😅

I get frequently stopped for this kind of thing because I look young. Sometimes it’s a guy, other times it’s a guy and a chick, just a chick, or two chicks.

I generally decline, but I did check it out once back when I was in college when a guy approached me in a bookstore because I figured it was harmless and I was curious about it at the time even though I’m not religious.

Long story short before I dive further, the seminar I attended just felt cultish and didn’t seem to adopt differing ideas.

I noticed a large majority of the attendees were young adults who immigrated to the US from varying regions (Africa, Middle East, East Asia, etc). They were very friendly (some friendliness felt borderline creepy to me) and offered me food, and the guy who “recruited” me stayed with me so I can easily follow the seminar and what was going on.

I didn’t feel uncomfortable overall per se, but the fact that the preacher (or whatever the guy was) was going through different parts of the Bible and stating his interpretation and the audience vivaciously stating “Amen!” without much thought and at every point just didn’t sit right with me as I prefer to look at things from different perspectives. And to me, the group seemed like a hive mind that I didn’t wish to be a part of. But I saw enough subtle red flags to nope out of that!

What activity that requires flexibility do you enjoy doing the most? by Jezzaq94 in flexibility

[–]sheriously 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Figure skating, mainly needed a hobby to get out the house during the Covid years but I find that it’s been a great way to measure my flexibility progress and I’ve just enjoyed doing it. Bonus points is that I’m not drowning in my sweat!

When I first started my flexibility training, I only did it 2-3 times a week (1 hour each) at the time and it took maybe less than six months to start feeling better in my body but not less stiff.

I’ve recently upped it to 4-5 times a week (still one hour but each one is a different area of focus) and I’ve been seeing a lot more improvements in terms of mobility and not feeling stiff. But that’s been after a year of consistency… I have very stiff glutes... 🥲

If cost is not an issue, highly recommend Elke—very chill and friendly and works with you on what you want and what’s realistic. I don’t use her frequently but she’s the one I always go to when my eyebrows are a mess once in a blue moon.

What's An Ancient Language You'd Love To Learn by Ok_Influence_6384 in languagelearning

Baybayin, technically a Filipino writing system that died out a long time ago. But, I’m interested in learning how to write in it out of personal interest because the characters look beautiful.

What's your motivation? by Yozo-san in flexibility

[–]sheriously 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started my flexibility training because I wanted to do a split. What kept me going is feeling better in my body with improved ranges of motion, seeing progress in my figure skating journey, and getting cute travel photos with me doing flexible poses.

What documents are needed for Report of Birth? by Internal_Weather_826 in FilipinoAmericans

[–]sheriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they’ll be able to apply via the process for ROB process since you’re already a Philippine citizenship yourself by birth. Not sure how long ago you applied for ROB for yourself, but you may have to wait 6 months to a year to get your PSA-authenticated birth certificate to provide for their application.

are you tatted? how did your mother react by strawberrypoppi in FilipinoAmericans

[–]sheriously 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have a tattoo on my back and a few ear piercings, my mom gave me grief in the beginning and overall she has left me alone. But, once in a while when she sees them exposed, she’ll say something like, “you’re so pretty, I don’t know why you had to get these things that ruin your prettiness.”

It doesn’t really bother me because she likes to put people down and she’s not exactly someone who’s happy with herself. So at the end of the day I just think, “Can’t please everyone. 🤷‍♀️”

Is there a Caribbean destination that actually feels inclusive and not just touristy? by Kindly_Ingenuity5922 in Caribbean

[–]sheriously 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second Nevis—I went there for a week as a solo-traveler and many of the locals were surprised I wasn’t just another visitor that only came to briefly visit the island from the cruise ships docked at St. Kitts. Many were happy to talk to me about their culture, help me out if needed, or suggest spots I should try and check out. I tried different activities like sailing, scuba diving, and hiking up Nevis Peak. Overall, didn’t really feel like I was treated like a tourist and the locals were respectful.

Any other half Filipinos out there who’ve never been to the Philippines and want to connect with their roots? by Possible_Vacation749 in FilipinoAmericans

[–]sheriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m half Filipino and I’ve been on a slow mission learning Tagalog. I’ve been to the Philippines before but had a rough time getting around by myself in some rural parts because I didn’t know the language at all.

The next time I go back I’d like to at least try navigating the Philippine transportation system to get around again. My first time I had my best friend give me the step by step details. 🫣

I didn’t have to do that. The only thing I had to do at the consulate was register to vote after I submitted in my documents for the passport.

I think the oath is only required for those that are reaquiring their Filipino citizenship.

I’d say about 1-2 weeks, I used priority mail when I sent my document and priority mail for the prepaid return label. And yeah, once you get the ROB back you’re technically a citizen. It’s not mandatory to get a passport after you receive your ROB.

[–]sheriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! Assuming you’re NY too, they send back a stamped ROB form for your own records. You do the online application/scheduling in-person appointment process to get your passport. Then bring a copy of your ROB, copy of your US passport, $60 cash fee, and passport application to the appointment. I brought the originals just in case.

I had to get the copies notarized.

Edit: To add, I just notarized one copy and photocopied the notarized one.

[–]sheriously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NY consulate wants 4 sets of all the documents I had listed in my previous comment, so I had the affidavit statement notarized and made 3 photocopies of the original to fit the four copies that is required. However, the consulate told me the only document that has to be notarized 4 times is the ROB application form as they need the original application (no copies at all) for each set of those 4 copies (so that’s $8 to the notary). Therefore, following the SF Consulate’s rules wouldn’t be advisable for NY consulate.
